Kevin Rudd has enlisted his MPs as an insulation scheme army, ordering them to help out by visiting insulation companies to help distribute the Government’s $41 million rescue package. The heat appears to be off Peter Garrett. Join us here from 2pm as we cover Question Time live.

      At last the PM gives context and perspective to roof insulation installation. Prior to the roll-out of the stimulus package, there was no appropriate training or standard procedures. There were fires caused by inadequate insulation application in 2007 and earlier years. Why didn’t the government of the day respond appropriately?

      preciouspress, Before 2007 there wasn’t a 3 billion dollar government funded scheme to attract the shonky installers. There has been 93 house fires, 4 deaths, 48,000 electrified roofs and 250,000 homes with faulty insulation in their roofs. All these things happened in less than ten months. And yet no one is responsible for implementing the scheme.

      Links please Luke.

      “48 000 Electrified roofs? 250 000 homes with faulty insulation.”

      Me make up numbers, that’s unpossible.

      Tim, You are correct about the 48,000 number, I meant potentially. Quoting what has been said in parliament question time and reported by various media outlets online and in print.  I believe that Peter Garrett announce a hotline number in parliament for those concerned. Safety checks to be carried out as there are potentially 48,000 roofs in question. So far it has been reported 1000 homes are in danger. Overall 250,000 homes are in need of inspection. Type in insulation scheme on ABConline search or research government and politics, there is enough infomation to make up your own conclusion.

      thanks for highlighting error.

      The tide is turning on this issue towards the government

      Mark my words, Tony Abbott has peaked .

      If the government holds the line in next weeks Newspoll you can put away the glasses as far as the election result is concerned.

      The sound you are hearing is the coalition media hacks slashing their wrists - they had their little hopes up so much !

      Tony Abbott has peaked! Spoken like a true Labor voter! You are so blind you cannot see your chosen party is being led by a phoney - all talk no action - a person only interested in feeding his own ego. My kids and their kids and their kids are going to pay for this - Australia’s worst Prime Minister. Rudd makes Whitlam look like a miser!

      @halberstram

      And if the Rudd government had put the scheme together with less haste and more thought there would be no need for the tide to turn, would there? Your comment merely confirms that it was a cock up!

      Your joking aren’t you? I just saw Kevin Rudd being interviewed by Kerry O’Brien in relation to insulation and I honestly believe it is the worst interview performance by a current PM. Not only did Kevin Rudd look sick, he also became quite rude and disrespectful. The cracks in his facade are opening up and beginning to look more like an earthquake.

      That article, and specifically the 85 per year figure before 2009, does not state how the fires were linked to the batts. As I understand it the 93 fires from the scheme were linked specifically to poor installation. How many were linked to the product quality of the batts? Poor installation of electrical wiring igniting batts withough fire retardant qualities or other factors opposed to downlights being too close in those 85? Without that information the article doesn’t hold up. Not saying that they weren’t linked to poor installation, however without explicitly stating it I cannot assume it.

      If you look at Crikey there a couple of interesting pieces. One of which accuses the Australian of lazy Journalism leading to the canning of the scheme and the other of which points out that statistically Garrett has improved the fire statistics. Interesting reading for the open minded.

      Have you seen the latest news?

      Peter Garrett’s just been demoted.  He is now the Minister for Environment Protection, Heritage and the Arts.  How is that a demotion?  Pffffftttt
