:Watching this film gives a good reason why we should never become involved in Afghanistan. Brutality breeds brutality and that country does not like invaders, it’s children killed or it’s homes destroyed.

Men in uniforms don’t sit well over there, “they all look the same to me”, the fear nad hate will be a long time dying.

The Taliban need a hiding, and it appears they’re getting one.
Not only will i (and others like me), be grateful, but so will the Afghans.

      Stephen,

You are a brave man thousands of KM’s away from the fighting. But I’ll tell you now, we won’t win. As soon as we pull out, it will all start again.
But you bare you chest and dream on.

What a bloody mess that place is.. God knows what the Soviets were doing there, and then they had to put up with the Taliban, and now innocent civilians are getting punished because of Al Quaida. They will never win in that place unless the west wins now. And Stephen I wouldn’t be so confident, they are not copping the hiding you think they are. Only a year ago the coalition forces where the ones copping the hiding.. Lets hope this latest surge helps. Its a shame the EU wouldn’t pump in more troops as well..

This movie (The Beast of War 1988) is a work of fiction, I have no doubt that the Soviet were very brutal in 1981 but so were the mujahedeen. What they did to Soviet prisoners and so called Afghan traitors is too horrific to describe here. This movie try’s to deal with the nature of war as it self and does it well. It does not attempt deal with the politics of the conflict.

Why is it called an ‘open thread’ if it is about something. I don’t have time to watch movies, mayne.

Yeh bugs me too. It should be a no holds barred soapbox and not under any editorial guidance.  As regards the film clips, if it is important enough it should stand by itself in an article, you could replace some of the more tedious authors efforts.

Your right Gordon, if people don’t use proper paragraph structure, they should be ignored and their opinion should count for zero. I had someone attack my paragraph structure, while using their paragraph structure to justify welfare for the rich. I suppose because he used paragraphs better than I did, we should give rich people welfare (ie Tony Abbotts PPL scheme)..

@Gordon to answer your question, I don’t think comments need to be perfectly written. I’d say the majority are written in a rush at work or something like that. We only ask that the comments are kept civil and don’t use all-caps.

Hey guys, just to be clear this is a forum for you to discuss anything you want. The content provided is just out of interest and a suggestion. Happy to kill the videos if majority rules they’re not enjoyable.

Lucy, what are your thoughts on publishing criteria for comments on news sites. Should they only publish comments that bear some semblance to recognised writing forms or do you think an ‘anything goes’ approach is better. Many of the comments I read don’t use capitalisation, punctuation, sentence or paragraph structure. If it were up to me, I wouldn’t publish their s@%&.

Lucy i’m surprised that this column’s subject did not attract much more comment. Afghanistan is a breeding and training ground for terrorism . Better for the perpetrators to be fought over there than in the back streets of Sydney or Brisbane.
Thanks for thinking of the film .

What is it with the growing Australian culture of “banning things”? You can’t read a news paper today without someone suggesting we BAN stuff. I reckon over time we’ll be worse than China.  What do you reckon guys? Should we BAN the thread because someone might say something we don’t like? Ban this Ban that, im bloody sick of it..

@ Lucy, keep the video’s, but just make it more clear that this forum is open for anything. Open Thread is a great idea…

The words “Open thread” in large text at the top is usually enough to tell me that these are open threads.  Isn’t it obvious? smile

Obviously not for some Ben… A video placed on the top of the page might make some people think that this forum is about that video… There’s no need to imply that people here are stupid..
