      In area the United Kindom would fit into Victoria.
      According to the 2001 census, the total population of the United Kingdom was 58,789,194.  You lot are talking about a projected population of 35 million for the whole of Australia?  GET REAL ! !

      Acotrel,
      Just about every metre of land not built on in the UK could produce food of some type. In Australia 60 -70% of our land can’t produce any thing edible. So there is no real comparison.

      acotrel - although this might be hard to understand - the UK and Oz are ... wait for it ... different. You know - apples and oranges and all that different stuff.

      Back to Gagarin - as politicians clamour to get into the history books at any cost and above all else, its good to see the big pages in history are never for politicians.  Gagarin deserves his page, a historical first with his life on the line, no spin needed.
      And a special thanks to all the heads down regardless Scientists, Engineers and Technicians that make this world a better place, in spite of politicians who never have such worthy individuals in their ranks.

      Scientists, Engineers and Technicians (the perfect rote learners of the World) do it cause they get paid for it. These people follow the Grants, all over the world. No work experience, there bro’.

      @Stephen - in your bitterness towards people that use their minds in complex ways beyond that of a TV personality and politician, you confuse academics (and you may have a point there) with Scientists Engineers and Technicians.  Most of these work commercially and are responsible for the incredible, inventive, complex work, services and products we all enjoy.  You may mock their achievements and you may be more content sitting in a cave, but most of the world benefits from these people.  I wonder how you made your comment - a stick with some hair stuck on it with saliva perhaps?  On your way home, as you sit in the train, car or even plane on motorways, tunnels and bridges, guided by your satnav, talking/twittering on your mobile,  listening to your MP3 player in the cool airconditioning,  as the remote doors on your garage open and the lights go on, just before you microwave your evening meal, maybe, just maybe you will become enlightened ........ bro;

      Love the technical things. Love the ipod, the mobile, laptops, things that keep my food cool (and warm), and i admire the science of Space and Technology. I know i/we use these things all the time, but they’re only objects. Things, artifacts. They are external to us, things thought up by smart people. Intrinsically, they have no meaning, except the meaning we give it, and i think we give them too meaning, and that we are loseing our capacity for any sophisticated relationships with other people because of them.
