Welcome to Wednesday at The Punch.

Today in 2005 three explosions on the Underground left 35 people dead. Al-Qaeda later issued a videotaped statement claiming responsibility.

But over to you: what’s on your mind today? Comments here are for whatever’s on your mind. Punch on.

For once Dubai has introduced legislation that I agree with. Full body scanners have been banned from use within their airports to maintain customer privacy. Most times ridiculous jail terms for pre marrital sex and public indecency stun me, but I think they may have this one right!
We should value our privacy enough to make the same move ourselves. There will always be the threat of terrorism, and there are other ways to ensure safety rather then a virtual strip search of every international traveller. We are hardly in the same position as Dubai, a Middle Eastern liberated culture compared to their neighbours who are ashamed and angered by them for adopting a western like culture.
      Ban em!

I agree, forcing us to live in fear and lose of our civil liberties is exactly what the terrorists are after.
we need to prove they will not win and and we will not run scared.

And how do the Brits ‘prove’ they (the extremists) will not win?

By allowing ‘British’ Muslims to gather and scream obscenities at returning British troops, burning the Union Jack, allowing some Sharia Law to be practiced in the UK, by pandering to religious extremists in the UK and allowing Muslim protesters to carry placards screaming for murder, death, beheading in the name of Islam etc??

Yup, the modern British way seems to be working well.

Only when full body scanners are introduced at Australian railway & bus stations will the threat of terrorism be truly addressed. Of course it won’t happen, the logistics and public anger would be intolerable however every single act of Western terrorism since 9/11 has occurred on buses & trains, nightclubs, theatres & at train stations yet we put up with this nonsense at airports by self important personal one step up from shopping trolley collectors waving explosive detecting wands, confiscating nail files, harassing people on crutches and all matter of stupidity and are allowed to get away with it. The only incidents in Australian airspace in recent years have been deranged passengers attacking aircrew, or trying to open doors mid flight, drunks and touring football teams, luckily for us without a nail file between them. Airports are singled out because you’ve paid well in advance for your ticket, alternate travel options aren’t available once you’re there and the time factor. If Governments are so concerned about terrorism, about our safety and all all the usual “war on terror” rhetoric when it comes to airports then why aren’t rail & bus stations equally treated? The 1st Government to introduce anti terrorist airport type security at a rail station would be kicked out of office and the staff at the station would be over-run, laughed at or told where to stick it
And would the Victorian bushfires be considered an act of terrorism? Over a 100 killed, massive damage to property & enviroment far greater & worse than London or Madrid. All a terrorist needs here is buy a box of matches and wait for a 40c day or jump on the 5.05 from Central or Flinders St with his laptop bomb.

Hmm, fun times, I actually arrived in London the morning of the bombings and was meant to be on one of the trains that blew up but thank god for complete laziness that forced me to take a shuttle bus instead of the tube from the airport
