      Hi Daniel,

I would much rather the term ladies & gentlemen!!  Is this all about our obsession & fascination about particular sports like Aussie Rules, American Football & the real Football, Soccer!!  It is a whole lot of action, competition, excitement, the rush of adrenalin & so much more!

Which be lacking in our every day monotonous lives & might not be all that bad for our physical & mental well being, considering the fact that we all lead stressful lives, right??

And most importantly, all that effort which goes into designing special head gear & out fits for our favorite teams. It might actually make us a little bit passionate & determined to win at any cost!!  How about the losing teams??  It is not so much about winning or losing, but all about how we play the game.  Best regards to your editors.

      NK
“Obsession” about AFL, ARL , Cricket, and maybe ARU is acceptable comment.
American football ? crap game, requiring 2 different teams to play one game.
Soccer isnt football, its wogball - played by girly fellas who are too scared to take a tackle..= they trip over then roll around the ground screaming, - pathetic stuff.
Just remember the natural order- AFL and/or ARL, Cricket in summer, ,and as for soccer - least said , the better.

@TChong, your use of “wog ball” is not ameliorated by the fact that you don’t like it.  You wouldn’t call a boomerang-throwing compeition “Abo Sport” or some nonsensical bullshit, so knock off the racism.

While I’m at it, if purists want us to use the term “Australian Rules” for AFL (because let’s face it, what gets played on the big screen is far, far removed from the seagull-chasing-chip nonsense that is regional “footy”, the proper term for “Soccer” is “Association Football”

Now I’ve got my pedant on, the whole idea that Association Football has it wrong was put to bed by Scully when he signed with Gold Coast for $5 million.  The only reason - the ONLY reason - Aussie Rules players aren’t playing football and diving all over the place is because they can’t make what Harry Kewell made.

AFL is a great game.  AFL’s second tier, the WAFL/VFL/SAFL, is barely watchable.  The rest of it is a nonsensical run around a park with a bunch of drunk idiots leaning on horns.

      You got it rong !

It’s not how you play the game, but how you win, that counts !

I like watching netball better than footy.  I’m not interested in watching men pat each other on the bum, when they do a good job of fumbling the ball.  They probably have the footy up in big flat screen TVs in the pubs in Oxford Street ?

You can say what you want, but many countries in the world don’t even know what cricket is.

AFL is pretty much Australia only.

So we’re left with Rugby, which is sorta picking up worldwide, but I doubt it will ever come even close to the World Game.

Football (soccer) is the biggest sport in the world, and will always be. The only other sport I can think of that comes close in being fun to watch is ice hockey. Both games are fast paced and unpredictable, a shot at goal on one side of the field is often followed by a shot at goal on the opposite side. This is something the slower sports such as rugby, and nfl simply cannot achieve, they are slow paced, almost turn based, which is quite a bore. AFL would probably be the best contender here, but it’s just not football smile

Remember, Wold Game, can’t argue with that.

    • Aitch B says:

“Football (soccer) is the biggest sport in the world, and will always be.”

I wouldn’t be so sure about that. Unless football can address some of the major issues (diving, corruption, arrogance at head office) it might find itself falling to #2.

Ridiculous you say? Well a billion or so basketball-mad Chinese might beg to differ. We’re one South American basketball superstar away from a changing of the guard.

    • neo says:

      02:33pm | 05/10/11

Basketball is probably the only sport that could, but even looking at the sizes of basketball stadiums, they are so tiny compared to football stadiums.

Thing is, basketball is pretty popular in all the countries where football is popular, both sports have been out there for a while, and football is the clear winner. So far and always smile

I don’t mind basketball either, but again, it is a bit turn based and predictable. Nothing can get your emotions going like a good old unpredictable football match.

Brett Stewart is not owed and apology. He turned up paralytic drunk five minutes after being announced as the “face” of Rugby League. As it was he got off lightly over the Manly Melbourne brawl where both brothers were IMO extremely lucky to be playing again this season. His actions and his subsequent carry on mean that both Stewart brothers owe the league and league fans an apology for their behaviour and bringing the game into disrepute and not the other way around.

Oh and while I’m at it Andrew Bolt was corrected not silenced.

After reading the tax post, today it got me thinking.

Politics is generally full of egos. Egos that suggest that they a) know better or more, and b) have the ability to “fix” things.

IMO this has led to a ridiculously over-bloated public service, and over-reaching statutes. My advice for politicians, is to provide a safety net and get the hell out of the way.

    • Adam Diver says:

      08:02am | 05/10/11

“STATE and Federal taxes will pay for a “naturist” exhibition that will see art lovers shed their clothes at a Melbourne gallery tomorrow night.

The Australian Centre for Contemporary Art at Southbank will be clothes-free for an hour while artist Stuart Ringholt, who will also be naked, guides guests through the artworks on display.”

This is exactly what I am referring to above. Anyone think our taxes should help fund these sort of activities?

    • Elphaba says:

      08:27am | 05/10/11

Oh, come on.  Your taxes are going to fund stuff you don’t like.  That’s just life.  Personally, I don’t believe my taxes should be funding people who breed, but I live in a society and I need to suck it up.

And yes, I’m more than happy for my taxes to go towards this kind of stuff.  But that’s just me.

    • TimB says:

      08:38am | 05/10/11

No. Not a chance. Exactly how does this contribute to society?

There are some seriously skewed priorities when it comes to handing out taxpayers money.

    • AdamC says:

      08:41am | 05/10/11

Elphaba, I’m with Adam Diver here. This is like the kind of arts grant you would make up as a joke.

In my view, governments should not fund arts, sports and the like. People should be expected to pay for their own entertainment and cultural activities.

    • Elphaba says:

      09:01am | 05/10/11

@AdamC, we disagree.  That a-ok. smile  I have no problem with money going to the arts.

    • TimB says:

      09:18am | 05/10/11

Elphaba, thinking about the issue a little more, I think the whole idea behind arts grants is that the art in question is supposed to inject money into the economy through the patronage it attracts (tourists and what have you). Same rationale behind the funding of sports stadiums.

So the question becomes would the above ‘art’ do that, at least to the extent that would justify the taxpayer expense? I wouldn’t think so (although I freely admit I have nothing but my opinion to base that off).  But I honestly can’t see huge droves of people descending on this exhibition.

It’d be like building a state of the art polo field. Not enough people give a damn to make it worthwhile.

    • iansand says:

      09:40am | 05/10/11

What sort of art is acceptable for grants?  Dogs playing poker?  Horses on beaches at sunset?

In the immortal words of Andy Warhol - “Art is what you can get away with”.

    • Elphaba says:

      09:52am | 05/10/11

@TimB, all valid points.  Look, I’m an art lover.  I say give it money.  It’s just my opinion, and like I said, our taxes are going to be spent in ways we don’t like.  We have to accept, as people living as a whole, that things happen every day that we don’t like.

I can’t rationalise why I like art.  Well, I can try.  I admire people with creative talent - I’m in awe of them.  And yeah, there is some shit out there that is uuuuuuugly - but it’s artistic expression and I think it makes the world a better place.

I’m a bit of a hipster at heart sometimes, and I’m ok with it. smile

    • Adam Diver says:

      11:27am | 05/10/11

I was writing a response how culture is important, and art is a way to manifest culture for current and future generations etc etc etc. But I can’t see why we need to set up a federal government to levy taxes to pay a select few to produce “art” that is relevant to very few people.

Essentially Elphaba, to convince me otherwise, you need to explain 1) why art can’t continue without other peoples money and 2) want broad benefit it provides to the comunity. Whilst I may concede musuems may be an acceptable part of tax payer funding (although not a priority), the example above seems beyond the pale.

Regardless, how much does it cost to make some paintings and provide a tour? Why can’t the artist use there own damn money?

    • Elphaba says:

      11:37am | 05/10/11

But Adam, I’m not interested in convincing you.  I don’t care whether your opinion is different to mine.  So long as your opinion means something to you, that’s all that matters.  I listened to your opinion, and I gave you a response.  I’m not trying to get you to agree with me. smile

Poor, poor Andrew Bolt. The media is out spreading such mistruths about his angelic self. Just read here, and witness the destruction caused when the media tells mistruths about the blameless:

      http://www.heraldsun.com.au/opinion/media-making-a-monster-of-me/story-e6frfhqf-1226158540963

Oh why, sobs Bolt, can’t the media try to be more accurate in its reporting?

And as for those pesky judges who find against him, watch as Bolta gallantly argues against their conclusions without actually explicitly saying they decided the case wrongly. Because making arguments through heavy implication protects you from all legal ramifications of contempt of court.

      Right?

Good to see we all learn our lessons.

    • Knemon says:

      11:17am | 05/10/11

      Manne, Rudd, Flannery, Turnbull

Just balancing the ledger, plus I seriously don’t think Abbott has much of an Ego.

Also since we are being accurate, how many times has your vote actually swung? I doubt any swinging voter would have such contempt for a fairly mailigned conservative.

    • Swinging Voter says:

      11:52am | 05/10/11

If I’m going to be accurate, I’d say it swung once.

I used to be a coalition voter till Abbott started leading the Liberal party. Never voted against Howard. Needless to say I voted Labor last election and don’t regret it at all.

I hate populist rubbish and simplification of complicated issues and I seversely displike partisan political games. That makes me not a huge fan of either Bolt or Abbott.

But Bolt is a symptom of the real problem with politics in Australia imo- irresponsible media which utterly fails to regulate its own inaccuracies. This breeds politicians who are interested in pandering to that type of coverage, which gives us our current level of debate.

I make no secret of the fact that I enjoyed the ruling. Alot.

My apologies, Swinging Voter, if I have got it all wrong.

    • Adam Diver says:

Politics is a tough environment for you, I would say.

“I hate populist rubbish and simplification of complicated issues and I seversely displike partisan political games”

That would nail pretty much everyone in parliament, so its more possible that its something else that you dislike about Abbott.

“I make no secret of the fact that I enjoyed the ruling. Alot”, so petty vendettas trump national interest I see. Sounds an awful lot like the politicians in which you despise. If Bolt deserved to learn a lesson it was through defamation channels.

    • Swinging Voter says:

      01:37pm | 05/10/11

“I was kind of thinking that Swinging Voter was a pseudonym of The Badger”

I’ve only ever used this pseudonym to post under, both on the Punch and Andrew Bolt’s Blog. I regularly attempt to provide some factual balance to his one sided accounts of many issues, particualrly legal ones (I’m a lawyer). End conspiracy theories and discuss issue pls.

“That would nail pretty much everyone in parliament”

To a certain degree i agree, but my distaste for Abbott is due to his taking it to an entirely new level. I find Gillard to be comparatively extremely believable and genuine. And that’s saying something.

“so petty vendettas trump national interest”

Shoddy journalism getting what shoddy journalism deserves IS something that makes me feel good. Sorry bout that. I mean, this is quoted from paragraph 384 of the judgment:

“The deficiencies to which I have referred to so far, are material and constitute a significant distortion of the facts upon which a central part of the offensive imputations were based. On the basis of those deficiencies, I am satisfied that the offensive imputation was not a fair comment and that s 18D(c)(ii) is not available to exempt the offensive conduct from being rendered unlawful”

The liar lost freedom of speech exemption for lying to attack people’s right to identify. Justice done, wrong righted, liar hoisted on his own petard.

    • Elphaba says:

      10:08am | 05/10/11

Any person who gets pregnant is doing it for themselves.  It’s innately selfish.  Just as selfish is the decision to not have them.  We have kids because we want them, not for the good of the nation.

This guy is a moron.  By his logic, I should have had babies with my high school boyfriend, or the abusive jerk I dated in my early 20s.  They were highly unsuitable as father material, and I would have been a rubbish mother but hey - my uterus was fertile soil!  Go nuts!

He’s an idiot.  We live longer, we have our babies later.  Age is not the only determing factor in what makes a good parent.

    • jay-ded says:

    • neo says:

      10:44am | 05/10/11

Thank you, Elphaba!  I’ve been waiting for people to cotton on to this for years now.

Having kids is the single most selfish thing we ever do.  That doesn’t make it wrong, it just makes it selfish.

The problem with society is that they think all selfishness is bad.  It’s not!

    • Shane* says:

      10:59am | 05/10/11

My folks had me very late. I had the ‘I’m physically stronger than my dad and better than him at sport’ realisation at 13. That was cool at the time but looking back it’s far from ideal.

If you’re waiting for a time when you’re perfectly financially secure to have kids, you’ll die waiting. If you’re waiting for a time when your career is stable, you’ll die waiting. And if you have this realisation too late and try at 40+, you’re in for a world of complications (health and lifestyle).

      I’m 25. I hope I have kids by the time I’m 30.

    • Elphaba says:

      11:02am | 05/10/11

Mahhrat, yes!  The word selfish has neither a negative nor positive connotation, it all comes down to the individual.

Look, I get what the doctor is saying.  Having babies when we’re young and healthy means that the child is healthy, women bounce back from childbirth easier, and both parents are young and active (hopefully) to cope with the demands of raising the child to adulthood.

But he’s living in a fantasy land.  Just because a woman is 20-25 doesn’t mean she should just have children now because she’s in the right stage biologically.  What if she hasn’t got the finances? What if she or her partner are an unstable crackhead?  What if their lifestyle choices are seting them up for chronic ill health later in life?

There are more factors to consider than simply how old one is, when it comes to having kids.  I personally am not sold on the idea of children for myself, and that’s my decision.  Yes it’s selfish.  Huzzah!  But if 40 year old mums & dads want to do it, and they have the time, and the finances, and the dedication to raise a healthy, functioning member of our society, I say go for it.

    • Elphaba says:

My mum is a nurse (once midwife) and they are termed “geriatric mothers”. Doctors refer to them as that in front of them, and it never goes down well.  It is the harsh truth, that people need to accept. It is not ideal to have kids so late in life and I think this man was refering only to women who CHOOSE to wait until that time for financial/personal/career reasons. I think that is selfish yes.

If for whatever reasons, you end up having a baby at that age, good luck to you. But I don’t think it is right to promote having children so late in life for “economical” reasons when it is horrifically draining on the mother and has later repercussions on the child. My daytime TV viewing today has seen so many “Mum’s panels” on Kerryanne reasoning this man to be an idiot. You keep telling yourselves whatever you need to ladies - but you can see right through it.

I am the youngest child of youngest children (both “change of life babies”) from big families (again, not the type of circumstances I think this Dr was talking about). So my Grandmas were 40 when they had parents and my Grandad’s were both 50 (coincidentally, my parents are also 10 years apart). Both my Grandads had died when my parents had me. I am 26 and if my paternal grandad was alive today he would be 113. Does that now blow your mind - it does mine. I am the absolute youngest of my generation on both sides of the family though, this would be hard to grapple with if I was an oldest child, or an only child.

We decided to have all our kids in our early 20’s so that by the time we are coming into our peak earning potential and have built a stable asset base and put a good dent in the mortgage, the kids will be just leaving home and we will have the money and the time to travel and enjoy ourselves, as all of our friends are doing now (on a tight budget).

@Shane - and that’s great - but saying to single people who want children “you really need to get on that - what are you, 28?”, is wildly depressing and unhelpful.

I’ve watched friends have to deal with that.  It’s awful.

@Shane - and that’s great - but saying to single people who want children “you really need to get on that - what are you, 28?”, is wildly depressing and unhelpful.

It’s also what would help contribute to our spectacularly awful 50% divorce rate.  People being scare shitless into marriage by doctors telling them their eggs are drying up.  Then we have kids from broken homes.  Awesome.

I think perspective can get lost in this debate.  If you’re on your wa to having kids when you’re 30, good on you.  I don’t think people in their 40s doing it should be demonised.

Geriatric mum indeed. Some countries class everyone after 24 as a geriatric mum. What’s the cut off in Oz?

I have memories of my great grandparents, something I cherish dearly. Unfortunately, my grandparents on my mum’s side are not with us anymore, so my kids will never know them :(

      @S.L.

Read what I have said today.  Read what Mahhrat said for further understanding.  When we have children, it is selfish.  When we don’t have them, it is selfish.  We do it for ourselves - not for a greater good.

Being selfish is not a bad thing.  It’s all in the spin.  It’s an essential human trait and should not be demonised.

      Understand?

@Elphaba get off your inner city trendoid inspired high horse!
I was agreeing with you Einstien!

    • fairsfair says:

      02:02pm | 05/10/11

      @SL - no not selfish.

Like I said, I only think it selfish for women who purposely leave starting a family until they have achieved A,B,C. I think this is what the Dr meant by his comments also. Its not ideal.

If you don’t meet someone until that stage of your life, its an accident, you’ve been trying for ten years, its your tenth kid - different story even though still not ideal.

    • Elphaba says:

      02:11pm | 05/10/11

@S.L, it sure as hell looked like you were asking a question.  Maybe you want to be clearer when writing.

I don’t live in the inner city, and I’m hardly a trend follower - but please, if name-calling makes you feel better, go nuts.  Water off a duck’s back and all that.

@ iansand, yeah we have a 4WD… will be going for 4 nights… so have about 4 days to play with!

Jade - Then head north up the beach.  Choose your tide and be careful driving - a lot of people roll when they drive too fast through waves and creeks.  Drive sensibly.

I’m not sure how good snorkelling would be.  It is a sand island, so no rocks, weed, coral etc.

Who posted that STFU parents blog link yesterday? I can’t do any work now, its so addictive.

    • fairsfair says:

      11:03am | 05/10/11

Someone else has posted it a couple times before. I have been looking at it for a couple years. It is so funny. Daytime TV is depressing me. Most of the interviews on the morning shows are just telling mothers how descriminated against they are (I think it is on the back of that Perth doctor saying old boiler mothers are selfish…).

Unbearable. I can’t reach the remote.

    • JC says:

      12:52pm | 05/10/11

I had a look at STFU believers.

Sorry to be such a downer but websites like that are why I don’t like to put myself in the same group as atheists.

So what if you don’t believe in God, you don’t need to put it on a T-shirt.

      Sorry,again.

    • Elphaba says:

      01:05pm | 05/10/11

      @JC,

I certainly don’t believe all Christians are like this, just as I don’t believe all parents are like the ones on the STFU Parents blog.

But it is a humorous site where there’s a collection of some of the more outrageous things people post on FB.

I have not lumped all people in the same basket.  Shame you can’t do the same.

    • JC says:

      01:56pm | 05/10/11

      @ Elphaba

I only looked at a couple of pages worth but I only saw 1 outrageous remark (about women should take the beatings from men until the man changes).

But most of what I saw was things like “thank Jesus for my low car payment!” with the moderator writing underneath it “Jesus sells cars?”, why is someone so silly for thanking Jesus?.

Which makes me think the website isn’t for what you mentioned but for desperate attempts to make fun of christians, like how I hate Ian hewitson and his stupid “Hueys cooking adventures” or whatever, if Hueys adds even just 1 nob of butter to what he is cooking I immediately think “Oh there goes fat Huey with his fatty food, man I hate this show”, irrational I know.

Anyway not sure why I’m so unhappy with that website, normal me would ignore it and move on.
Also, I havn’t put ALL people in the same basket, just Atheists raspberry

    • Elphaba says:

      02:16pm | 05/10/11

      @JC,

Then if it offends you, don’t read it.  And you know what I mean - if militant Christians want to wear God on a tshirt, then it’s the least a militant atheist can do.  No one has got dibs on being a sanctimonious prick - both sides are completely guilty.  Let them have at it.  Just don’t watch if you don’t like it.
