What comes after Mad Monday - totally treacherous Tuesaday? There’s bound to be more than a few sore heads around the AFL world today, with most players spending yesterday boozing up for their annual end of season shenningans.

Mid-driff Monday more like it

Dressing up was a big part of the festivities. Check out this particularly fetching shot that was doing the rounds of Twitter yesterday. Can you guess who it is?

Welcome to Tuesday, what else is on your mind?

OMG !  Are we really about to be free of dead boring radio commentaries on transitory exertions ?  Footy, Olympics, Para-olympics when will it ever end ?  I suppose we’ll be back to criquette, and Lorne bowels in a minute ? Do people really get an adrenalin rush from listening to that stuff or watching it on TV ?

I’m just all a quiver, waiting for the Curling finals to be broadcast on the ABC, hopefully sooner rather than later.

Criquette sounds interesting - is that cricket played with a mallet, or croquet played with a bat? Hopefully the former - Chris Gayle swinging a mallet at a Shaun Tait thunderbolt could result in a serious injury and would therefore be seriously entertaining, and anyway croquet can be a bit tedious ..unless of course it’s Extreme Croquet

Watched that link you posted about this last week. What a joke the investigation was. I agree with the greens wanting an independent body set up ti investigate all poilce shootings and deaths.

I’m glad that you did Max, it was a somewhat enlightening episode wasn’t it?

The police cannot be trusted to investigate their own. It’s an obvious conflict of interest.

    • Max Power says:

Well it is just another arrow in the police quiver of dodgy investigations and falsifying evidence. This is a perfect example of why we should be worried about any laws that strip us of our right of presumption of innoncence.
The whole argument of “If you have done nothing wrong, you have nothing to fear” goes out of the window. It is quite clear if you have done nothing wrong, the police are more than happy to concoct a story, give deliberately false and misleading statements and evidence to make sure you have done something wrong.

The kicker for me in all of this, is that the officer deemed the best way to save this guy from harming himself, was to shoot him in the back and kill him. It sure did stop him from harming himself.
The funniest thing, is the detective leading the sgt to say yelling “taser, taser, taser” was not a mistake but indeed an attempt to warn everyone that she was about to take action. A simple, drop the knife or I will shoot, could achieve the same result, whilst accurately and concisely making her intentions clear.

Electing to shoot was a poor decision made by an officer who was unable to think straight under pressure. The yelling of Taser, taser, taser prior to shooting him, backs up that Sgt was unable to think straight and make sound decisions under pressure.
Add to this her deliberate false statements and lack of integrity and it all adds up to this Sgt not being a fit and proper person to be a police officer. You can throw her partner and the detective leading the investigation into that category as well, neither have the values expected of a police officer.

Which is what I’ve been saying for ages. There is an entrenched culture of corruption and coverups, an independant body needs to be set up to audit them.

Well as I attempted to post out yesterday (a day where ZERO posts got through, fix your comments software FFS):

The mighty Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, minor premiers in all three grades, the first time this has happened since Canberra achieved the same feat in 1990. HUGE props to Dessie. Now the hunt for the title begins.

And commiserations to Chongy, Ant and the Tiggers. Not quite good enough I’m afraid.

      The Raiders are coming.

We’ll deal with the Sharkies this week, Then Souths in week two.

Then it will be plain sailing with an easy victory over the Bulldogs in week three and a 30 point romp against Melbourne in the GF.

      You heard it here first.

How come Fairs? Weekend plans? Cancel ‘em! wink

I’m hoping for a Canterbury-Bunnies GF myself.  One of my friends (and his dad) are huge Bunnies fans, and his dad has access to a corporate box via his work. So if we end up with a Canterbury-Souths matchup, he might be able to finagle me a spot. A long shot of course but it would be pretty damn sweet!

So my hopes for the weekend:

      1. Canterbury to clobber Manly
      2. Souths to beat Melbourne.
      3. Cronulla to take care of Canberra
      4. Cowboys to finish off Brisbane. Stupid Brisbane.

My tips for week 1 of the Finals:

      - Canterbury to beat Manly in a high-scoring thriller
      - Melbourne to beat Souths in a low-scoring, highly defensive game
      - Cowboys to beat the Broncos in a fairly one-sided affair
      - Raiders and Sharks both conspiring lose the game

But, being serious now, I think it’s a bad thing. I sent an email to the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security in Canberra telling them how I felt about this internet trespass that they were proposing and that if the AFP wanted my password they could go jump. I got a surprising amount of replies, the PJCIS (acknowledging my email), the Libs (both Chris Pyne and Tony and a couple of others), Greens (3 different members), Xenophon, Kruddy (well his rep anyway, telling me that if I preside outside his electorate he can’t help me! lol),  but am still waiting from one from the big girl herself or at least her secretary!  Roxon is a worm IMO and has lost all credibility with me I am afraid. . The backflip that Roxon has pulled on this issue in just a few short weeks is the real worrying thing. Obviously she either changes her policy to suit whatever narrative her bosses give her, or she was lying in the first place about her bot being convinced of the need for the measures.

What I want to know is, exactly how do these measures make life easier for our spooks and the accountants in the tax department? Because I remain thoroughly unconvinced.

Secondly, how can the government justify the cost and loss of freedom when any self respecting criminal, terrorist or kiddly fiddle would be able to get around this measure by using a TOR browser and an offshore I.P address?

Or are they not telling us the truth in the first place? Cause that’d be shocking.

I dunno M, I think that backflips are what Labor is all about lately. Have they done anything that hasn’t involved one? It really concerns me that they seem to have no true direction and are just fluttering in the wind.  The new promises, that start AFTER the 2013 election, seem to just be thought bubbles they have put into the voters mind knowing that they cannot be paid for by a new government. gillard knows she has lost the next election, so why not make the next one appear like bastards because they cannot afford her “promises”!

      Here’s one for you Punchers.

I have two dogs.  One is a Beagle, so he’s totally food-centric, very friendly, and is an absolute Houdini.  The other is a GSD, who is totally obedient unless her brother is around, because she follows his lead.  She is opposite - not food centred at all, but very much interested in chasing ball.

Yesterday, Beagle dug a hole half a metre deep and wide to escape my yard.  They did this to access my neighbour’s yard, to visit my neighbour, who is a really really nice guy who gives my dogs treats.

While my dogs have escaped before, they haven’t tried anything like this for months now, but yesterday have and I say it’s for the treats and the company.

Apart from again reinforcing my fenceline with chicken wire, is there any point addressing the snack feeding and so on?  I mean, the guy’s a jet, he’s a lovely old bloke who thinks particularly the Beagle is just awesome.  He’s suggesting leaving a hole in the fence so they can come and go as they please, but given his own dog is seriously overweight and I’m trying to NOT let them get that fat, I’m worried for the health of my dogs!

    • Snappy Legs says:

      08:18am | 04/09/12

It sounds like a win-win situation for you actually. Just feed your dogs half of what you normally feed them and let him feed them and hence pay for the rest. 50% savings for you! They have a friend next door to amuse them while you are gone and he makes sure they and probably your house are safe while you are out.

First world problem that is easily fixed.

    • marley says:

      08:36am | 04/09/12

@Mahrat - Beagles are active little guys, curious, and they need a LOT of exercise - you dog might be going next door as much out of boredom as for the treats.  Upping his daily walks to try to wear him out. might help, as might getting him into some kind of “intellectual” pursuit (10 minutes of training a day can challenge a doggie brain and reduce the boredom quotient considerably).

Then there are toys you can get that might keep him occupied on your side of the fence (I don’t remember the name, but there’s a big ball you put dog treats into, then the dog rolls it around trying to get the treats to drop out - it can keep a food- centered dog busy for hours).  Kongs stuffed with treats do the same thing and I’m sure there are other things in a similar vein. That might be enough to keep yours engaged and disinclined to go foraging elsewhere.

If he still gets through, well, you could have a word with the neighbour, or you could just keep an eye on his weight, and reduce his own food supply (or up his exercise) to keep his weight under control.

    • Chris says:

    • Gregg says:

      09:01am | 04/09/12

Snappy Legs has a good point though the novelty factor may eventually wear off on Jet Jackson.

You can buy special ball like things that you can put treats inside and it takes a bit of jiggling to get them out, something that can keep dogs amused for hours.
Maybe you could do with a few of them and you do want to do something that will deter hole digging for that’ll be better than a concrete back yard and no garden.

Sounds like old Jet may have already set the scene and that’ll make reversing habits even more difficult.

    • Grey Ghost says:

      09:04am | 04/09/12

what pray tell is a GSD?

    • Cynicised says:

      10:12am | 04/09/12

Many elderly people over- feed their pets, Mahrat. They do it out of kindness but it’s misdirected. The hole in the fence so the dogs have company sounds wonderful, especially since your neighbour is so happy to have them around. Maybe a brief word to him about their dietary needs would be a good idea and then, If he agrees, leave a portion of their normal food with him every couple,of days so that you arn’t taking advantage of his generosity and he gets a visit from another person he can converse with.

    • Chris L says:

      10:13am | 04/09/12

I agree with Snappy Legs. In addition, your neighbour’s dog might get a workout running around with the shepherd. (I’m making an assumption on what GSD is for. Please correct me if I’m wrong.)

    • Louie the Fly says:

      10:17am | 04/09/12

      Hiya Mahrat,
My friend has a beagle who cracked her pantry code, found the cat food - a case of it -and proceeded to eat 18 foil packs of cat dinner - minus the foil.
The same night he was completely bemused by the no show of his own dinner.
So I get the beagle food thing.

If dogs and neighbour love the company and it makes everyone happy, can you give the neighbour some diet treats for the beagle - or tiny pieces of dried liver, I’m talking MINISCULE pieces?

My Dodgy Brothers (the rescued chihuahuas) are truly fatty and skinny - so to feed up the skinny one - I have to give the fat(ish) one a treat at the same time to stop hurt feelings.

    • che says:

      10:20am | 04/09/12

I would let them go over there, it’s good for them to have company during the day. But I would talk to the guy and suggest some healthier snacks for your beagle, or even suggest he just gives company and not snacks.

    • AFR says:

      10:23am | 04/09/12

It’s a tough one. The local ranger dubbed my foxy “MacGyver” due to his constant escapades. It took 10mm think perspex drilled permanently into the gate to stop him. Lucky for me he is not a digger, otherwise I would be stuffed.

    • Mahhrat says:

      11:00am | 04/09/12

Aye, the problem is certainly walking - I’ve been limited cos of my back and I’d normally take them both about 3 km or so each morning if I’m at my usual.

I don’t mind the hole idea, but I’d like it to be controllable, because while neighbour will keep his gates locked up, others won’t (and then there are front fences and such to consider).

The only thing that’s stopped them so far is chicken wire.  I’ve screwed it to the fence around the back, about 10cm up and then 2 feet or so along the ground, staked down.  They haven’t tried to go under it, which would take a helluva thing.  I’m going to wire up this area of fence next.

But yes, I probably should not have got dogs while I’m away during the day, y’all are right on that.  As a friend suggested though, boredom for the Beagle (who is from the pound) is better than dead is nobody had taken him home.

      Still, we shall see.

    • Cynicsed says:

      11:21am | 04/09/12

One thing about beagles, Mahrat is that they are notorious diggers and will get under just about anything unless confronted by solid rock, concrete or brick. A bored beagle is Houdini.  Good luck!

    • Ally says:

      11:52am | 04/09/12

I think it’s really sweet that your neighbour is taking an interest in your dogs, but I’d personally be against him feeding them. Not only because you don’t know how much or what your dogs are being fed, but because they’ll get in to the habit of thinking the neighbour is going to feed them. Eventually, you might get a new neighbour that might have a very different opinion about two dogs moseying over for their daily snack.

My dad is actually like this. He likes to pop by my house while I’m at work and give my dog bones. And then he will only tell me this after the dog has already been fed the normal amount of food. As a result, the dog is looking a bit porky so I’m cutting back on his food. Dad will not be told, no matter how many times I say not to give the dog extra food, or limit it to once a week at most.

My point is that even if you ask the neighbour to stop feeding them he probably will continue to do it anyway. So I would suggest providing him with some low calorie doggy snacks (only a small amount each time, not a whole packet) and adjusting your dog’s food accordingly.

Dogs need to be out and about rolling in something new and disgusting, sniffing some arses, wizzing on newly discovered telegraph poles and chatting up (/knocking up) the bitches smile It’s the call of the wild.

    • marley says:

      02:09pm | 04/09/12

@Mahrat - lots of people have dogs and are away all day - don’t beat yourself up about that.  Just try to figure out how to keep the dog challenged while you’re off at work.  The treat ball is one way, or you can have things strung from trees for the dog to jump up at.  There are plenty of internet pet suppliers, so have a look at what they have to offer - you should be able to find something that will appeal, and keep the dog amused.

The other thing is, if you can’t walk far at the moment, take one of those ball thrower thingummies and have the dogs run around chasing balls.  They do all the work and you don’t have to do much walking or bending.

    • sami says:

      02:10pm | 04/09/12

Snappy Legs has an excellent point, just let the neighbour feed them snacks and reduce the portion sizes of the beagles regular meals. Sorted. I’d love a neighbour like yours!

Kongs are great for keeping them entertained if it’s bored. Chuck some dog bickies in it and stuff it with peanut butter. Or freeze some food in it in the summertime. Kongsicle smile

Otherwise if you know a teenager, see if you can rope them into being your dog walker. They might love it. Give them 10 bucks a week or something. Dogs get a workout, teenager gets a fun ‘chore’ and some pocket money and you get less fencing bills. Maybe the neighbours dog can go along too.

@Chris and @Grey Ghost - GSD is German Shepherd Dog.

One more suggestion to keep your beagle happy, if I may.. Perhaps let him have apart of the yard/garden he’s allowed to dig up (will take a little training) and bury the Kong or other smelly treat. It will keep him amused and maybe minimise the escape attempts.

Like many other people I got an ALP Party Political “analysis” of my electricity bill (see http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/838/image10ah.jpg/) in the mail.

Wow, doesn’t that $9 (out of every $100) due to Gillard’s do-nothing-for-global-temperatures CO2 tax look small, almost insignificant.

Well, get your rulers out. A bright spark has measured those bars and the 9% “CO2 Tax” isn’t to scale… It’s been shrunk. That bar represents just under 7% (6.93% according to my calculations).

The ALP can’t even tell the truth in a simple pamphlet, what whoppers must they be telling about the rest?

      The ALP is a disgrace.

I admire Barnaby Joyce for his plain-speaking ways, but he is dead wrong on the sale of Cubbie station:

      http://www.theage.com.au/opinion/political-news/opposition-divided-over-station-sale-20120903-25amj.html

Joyce’s alternative to selling the site to a foreign consortium , including Chinese participants, is laughable. In essence, he seems to advocate the government acquiring the station and, presumably, any other agriculrural asset that may be at risk of being sold to overseas buyers. Even if an argument could be made for this policy - which I doubt - how would the government fund these purchases? By selling bonds to the Chinese and others, no doubt.

I’ve got the shits that Chapman got off! Bloody wrong!

It seems you can wack a guy late and high and draw blood and get off if you play for one of the Victorian teams just because it’s on the eve of the finals.

He got reported during the game and Grundy didn’t! The ball had been disposed of and he follows through with two forearms to the side of the head. And gets off?? Give me a break!

      So, the CFMU/Grollo circus continues:

      http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/police-take-control-at-troubled-grocon-site-20120904-25b4j.html

This case highlights the need for a tough cop on the construction IR beat. As it stands, it appears that the CFMEU is trying to blackmail and bully Grocon into dropping legal action against union leaders in exchange for industrial peace. These are the union leaders who, despite having signed off on an agreement with the company, launched an industrial action that has caused significant losses. In other words, they clearly cannot be trusted.

Thankfully, in a rare show of political conviction, not to mention common sense, the Victorian government is backing the Court action. Meanwhile, both federal and state Labor continue to kowtow to their union financial backers. As usual, Laborites fail to distinguish the public interest from those of their sponsors in the industrial wing. I say, it is well past time to bring back the ABCC.

    • M says:

      11:39am | 04/09/12

Wasn’t it labor who dismantled the Construction industry ombudsman in the first place?

That whole episode really is farcial. What is this, the 1970’s?

    • Tim says:

      11:59am | 04/09/12

You do realise that what the union is doing is illegal and there is already court action against them?
What would a “tough cop” do that the courts aren’t likely to do in coming weeks? I think the union will cop a massive damages claim.

    • TimB says:

      12:38pm | 04/09/12

‘You do realise that what the union is doing is illegal and there is already court action against them?’

Tell Shorten that then Tim. He seems to be backing the unions given his endorsement of the FWA arbitration.

What I want to know is how on earth the Union can be so arrogant so as to deliberately ignore the rulings of the supreme court?

VIC police should do what they did with the Occupy idiots- Issue an ultimatum, then if non-compliance continues, act with necessary force to ensure it.

    • Tim says:

      12:51pm | 04/09/12

      TimB,
the police are seeing it as a civil dispute but I would agree that they should be more proactive in enforcing the courts ruling.

But I don’t think this dispute means that our IR laws need tightening.

What they’re doing is already illegal, I’ll be interested to see what the court decides when it comes to the damages claim.

    • AdamC says:

      01:21pm | 04/09/12

@M, indeed they did, just in time for the CFMEU to revert to type.

@Tim, yeah, but those are private proceedings to seek compensation for private loss. (Even then, the ALP and its offshoot, Fair Work Australia are doing their level best to protect their construction colleagues from even that accountabiity.) My point is, why is this union allowed to tear up agreements, go on strike, blocade sites and intimidate workers in the first place? Why aren’t there any regulatory sanctions?

@TimB, exacty. Imagine if Grollo the younger had thumbed his nose at Court orders like that. The double standard is absurd.

    • M says:

You will remember that Julia Gillard referenced the numerous illegal boat arrivals, as an illustration that her Bestie and mentor, Rudd, was running a dis-functional Government. In doing so Gillard put the Asylum seeker issue firming at the forefront in terms of what she wanted to be judged by.

“I am full of understanding of the perspective of the Australian people that they want strong management of our borders and I will provide it.”?—?Julia Gillard, June 24, 2010

Gillard has no one to blame for her Illegal arrivals debacle but herself.

Marvel please at the shear incompetence I outline below….

      - It was Julia Gillard who elevated the handling of asylum seekers to its status as the most important issue by which she should be judged.

      - Remember Julia Gillard rushed out the half-baked East Timor Solution BEFORE it had been fully discussed with East Timor. (total incompetence)

      - Gillard picked Chris Bowen, arguable one of Labors few talents, for the all important Immigration role, upon which she wanted to be judged. What a waste of talent!

      - We all saw Julia Gillard rush out the announcement of the“Malaysia Solution” even BEFORE that solution had been negotiated with Malaysia. (Gross incompetence)

      - We know Gillards Malaysian concentration camp solutions were knocked back not once, but TWICE by our highest legal bodies. (Mega gross incompetence)

      - It was Julia Gillard who promoted the Malaysian concentration camps solution whilst the Malaysian Government was in the throws of a vicious HUMAN RIGHTS crackdown. (shows total lack of conscience and human Rights)

      - Now the Gillard Government has been forced to take the Coalition solution, as recommended by their own specially appointed panel, set up to do the job the Gillard Government was elected to do, i.e make policy.

      - We thought the Gillard Government had exceeded expectation with 100 illegal arrivals per week, but since the Gillard Governments new policy has been launched, we’ve got 70 illegals arriving per day! (total failure in anyones language or terms)

      - Last year Gillard spent $1.1 Billion dollars of our money stuffing up this issue. This year the skies the limit. Wouldn’t a childrens’ hospital or two have been better?

She set the objective by which her leadership should be judged.

This is a debacle of her own making.

    • Dash says:

      01:33pm | 04/09/12

@Babylon - If people are not going to ditch the ALP now, when will they?? You have to question the mental state of people who can sit by and watch the bullshit that comes out of, and infests, the ALP and still vote for them?

I just don’t understand how anyone can justify voting ALP unless it’s because they are on the gravy train.

You have the union issues with the HSU, the CFMEU thuggery, the PM’s ethical conduct and the AWU scandal. You have the longest list of promises and non delivery ever seen in this country. You have record levels of deficit and debt. You have a party that can’t seem to balance the nations finances in the biggest mining boom ever! You have fraud, rorts, corruption, lies, waste. Who the hell are the 33% who still want to vote for these morons?

They announce a NDIS, dental care and now school schemes all of which are way way off into the future without a word of funding, and idiots come running with praise. Give me a break!

How short are some peoples memory? In 2007 we got promises of cheaper fuel and cheaper groceries. To build 260 childcare centres and provide a coast guard. Education revolutions, not to touch the private health tax rebate. In 2010 we got, an East Timor announcement, “committments” to hold a citizens climate assembly and a that there would not be a carbon tax. Now we’re told there’ll be billions for dental, billions for disability insurance and billions for schools.

Who believes a government with zero credibility?
