The “Spruce Goose” one of the world’s largest planes (designed by US millionaire Howard Hughes) took to the sky for the first and last time, today in 1947.

And it’s Tuesday at The Punch. What’s on your mind (and what horse are you backing)? Share it all here.

The spruce goose reminds me of the “Yes Minister” classic line: “...the excuse we used for Concorde, it was a worthwhile experiment, now abandoned, but not before it had provided much valuable data and considerable employment”

The Goose did provide much data. It created new ways of building immensely strong, but light, structures from wood. The aircraft was commissioned by the US government during the war for high capacity cargo transport across the Atlantic. Their shipping at the time was being torn to pieces by the German U-boat fleet. Steel and aluminium was off limits as they were considered essential to war effort so timber was the only remaining viable material. The huge amount of R&D required to build such a craft from wood (it was actually Birch, not Spruce, for the most part) meant long delays. Hughes ended up plugging a good sum of his own money into it to get it finished when funding stopped. He took it for a short flight just to prove it would actually fly after being subject to so much criticism.

We have our high-strength laminated timber beams today as a result of his efforts.

The use of wood for aircraft had already been proven in the Mosquito Bomber. One of the most beautiful aircraft I’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing. Helped a great deal by the fact that the engines rotated in opposite directions, thus neutralizing torque.

I was 4 years old when The Spruce Goose flew and saw it on the Newsreel news at the “pitchers’ from the 1d (penny = 2 cent) front row seats.

Today I will sit in my Box Seat (in my loungeroom) and watch the races and enjoy prawn cocktail and cold ham with salad, washed down with home brewed ale. While wearing my HARRIS TWEED jacket.

      Hi Lucy
I like Descarado, that’s where my money’s going. Although I really do hope So You Think wins for Bart. That’ll make it 13 for him. What about you?

Hi Nicole, you may not have asked me directly, but I am going to tell anyway wink Even though we got the bum barrier - I am going with Shocking due to the local connection. I know it will lose, but hey, you have to show some support now don’t you. Yesterday in my office it was agreed that we would all frock up. I now sit at my computer complete with facinator as all others arrived in regular get up. Annoyed to the max. I feel like a goose and not a sruce one at that :(

Hi Nicole, I have pretty bad luck with these kinds of things but I’m going in the office sweep and I got Precedence ....Got luck with yours!
@fairsfair ..... oh, no! I bet you look great though

    • Nicole says:

      09:42am | 02/11/10

Oh yeah fairsfair that barrier is a shocker. No horse has won from 24 for forty odd years. But hey anything can happen and Michael Rodd is an excellent jockey, so expect the unexpected.
So you’re the only one who frocked up? Now that’s nasty! Good luck smile

Thanks for the support ladies, it means a lot wink

A few late arrivals have swanned by with towering hats, so I don’t feel so out of place now.

My second pick is Profound Beauty. I am confronted by it everyday - I can ignore it no more wink

We boys of All Ages appreciate all the work you girls put into looking good, even on bad hair days. And especially like you when you tart up and look real good at the races and when we take you out to dinner.

Long stemmed Red Roses to you all.

Well, all the girls are wearing hats here and it makes for an interesting sight. The champagne is in the fridge, we have various food items being delivered shortly and after that ...well, I’ll be off to the TAB to collect, of course.

Silly horse. I blame Kevin Rudd, apparently he was tipping Shocking. He clearly cursed the horse.
