Boxing, like Test Cricket, is a man’s sport, but only the former is consistently good to watch. ‘When We Were Kings’ is a terrific film about boxing, so go see it before feeling too critical about violence in sport.

At the time it seemed that the world had stopped to watch these two supermen in the art of boxing – not fighting. I recall our school turned on the black and white TV and watched the event. The showman Muhammad Ali (Cassius Clay) in particular was a superb boxer both physically and mentally together with his sharp tongue. He has to be rated the best sportsman ever. The days of 15 round bouts have gone and how these guys did it is beyond me given where sports science was at that time compared to what we know today. Love to see the current lot of heavyweights go 15 rounds.

I don’t consider boxing a sport. It does not fit into my idea of a sport endorsed by an enlightened society when the best result is your opponent’s unconsciousness due to brain and facial injuries. I’d say we have a way to go!
