This week heralded the beginning of The Punch’s 23 biggest moments of the year countdown. Which is lucky, because not a whole lot happened in the news this week. Yeah, there was the mini-budget, which Mark and Mal told you all about. And the Murray-Darling report dropped... Not a whole lot else, though. Feel that summertime laziness in the air?

The Punch scratch around for a lead on a quiet news week. OK, so if you really must know, this a Toque macaque, a Sri Lankan species, and baby at Berlin Zoo. Picture: AFP

However, while the news cycle may have needed a defibrillator, The Punch was firing. Lucy was in top form nailing who the real dopes are when it comes to pot and why good body image is a fat myth. Schoolies was a hot topic. Penbo raised his fist at the youngens and cried: “hell no you flamin’ mongrels” and on the other side, a Gen Y-er put his foot down and saying, look Mr Penberthy, sir… hell yeah to boozin’ and rootin’. The headline of the week was without doubt: “Bugger it, let’s talk about my bottom”.

Kids are digital, but that doesn’t mean they’re savvy, I pointed out as Australians got a bit panicked about internet addiction. The Brisbane Roar, forever underrated, finally got rated by Triple M Director of Sport Dan Ginnane. And TV industry veteran Helen Parker revealed why Kyle & Jackie O’s televised careers haven’t been particularly successful.

It’s Friday, Punchers. What’s on your mind?

Kyle, and Jackie O’s careers have obviously been cynically contrived by media executives to appeal to the lowest common denominator !  The trouble is that there are not really so many of us, and many of us that are left are becoming educated !

Are you insinuating acotrel, you’ve only just decided to stop listening to Kyle & Jackie O, on the radio or watch them on television?  Due to your intelligence kicking in.

Fair enough Erick, doesn’t surprise me, those who adhere to the idea of the lowest common denominator, never have expectations anyway, in any facet of their life.

I wonder how many articles that The Punch team will write to criticise Triple J “identities” Brendan McLean & Paul Verhoeven?

I mean, surely calling Gillard a whore is misogynist, isn’t it? As well as being much more offensive than anything that Kyle Sandilands said.

And what about calling Tim Mathieson gay as an insult? Isn’t that homophobic?

Or do they get a free pass for being far left wing?

      I loved this.

I cannot for the life of me understand why people are so against it.  It doesn’t change any of the rights or perks of marriage for straight people, and since there are plenty of straight people making a mess of marriage and children’s upbringings right now, I can’t see how gay people are suddenly going to do it worse.

Certain people are bastards, it has nothing to do with your sexual orientation.

I think they’re making all this bashee noise because they’re on the losing side.  It’s inevitable.  Gay people will be able to marry in Aus eventually and there’s nothing they can do about it.  Their squealing and pretending that it’s for the good of humanity to prevent it amuses me no end. smile

      Great point Elphaba.

    • Elphaba says:

      11:43am | 02/12/11

@Knemon, I haven’t seen a decent reason yet to oppose it.  Marriage is not about religion (it was adopted, not invented by it), churches will not be forced to marry gay couples (nor should they), and gay people being allowed to marry is not going to suddenly strip heterosexuals of any rights.

Gay marriage is not going to make the institution any less sacred or special.  I’m pretty sure celebrity marriages have already taken care of that.  Marriage is what you make it. If you think marriage is special, then you should be allowed to get married - gay or straight.

Heading to what may be my last music festival this weekend, Homebake in Sydney. I’m 37 in February and I love checking out all the live music but the annoying 18-23 year old’s just do my head in these days! Fingers crossed I make it through the day tomorrow.

It appears that I’m a grumpy old man with an age identity crisis. Does anyone know the right age to give up on festivals and boozing? Is there an age, or do most people just stop because they have kids?

@ Kebabpete - My OH is a live band photographer.  He would agree with your assessment of the 18-23 year old’s behaviour.  But, in saying that, there is a large group of older people that do attend festivals that don’t feel the need to drink copious amounts of alcohol and then throw up everywhere or get into fights.  There are people in their 60-70’s that still attend because they love the music.  There thoughts are “It’s all about the music.  If you love the music, you put up with the ‘younger adults’ as they too are originally there for the music.”  smile

      @Kebabpete

I’m 37 as well and an avid lover of live music.  I went to Harvest a few weeks ago and it was awesome, though the crowd was a bit older.  I gave up on the BDO when I hit 30; it wasn’t so much the younguns that ruined it for me, it’s the bogans.  Rather then go to the BDO I save my dosh and go to a couple of sidies if there’s any of my favourites playing.  I’m going to see Mudhoney at the Corner next week, and can’t wait!

@Watcher, you’re so right about it being not about age, but the love of music.  When Jonsi did his solo tour last year there was a couple there who were either well into their 70s, or had lived a REALLY hard life, and they were clearly loving every second of it.

I took my 70 year old Mum to see Eddie Vedder (her first ever gig!) and Gurrumul this year.  She loved both, but her heart belongs to Eddie, and has since I first got into Pearl Jam when living at home as a teenager.  She also wants to come along to see Sigur Ros if they ever tour again, as long as it’s a venue with seating as she has spinal problems.  In the last year I’ve also introduced her to Portishead, Adele, Mark Lanegan, Decoder Ring and Florence + the Machine! Her body may be failing a bit, but good music keeps her young at heart.

The sweetest thing I’ve seen this year was Mum following me out of the Palais after EdVed saying “My back’s not hurting, I’m not feeling any pain!” What is that?”.  And I had to explain to her the joy of post-awesome-gig euphoria.  And she said “Oh that’s why you were always so strange when you used to come home from concerts!”  I could also have taken the opportunity to explain LSD, but thought better of it.  Why spoil her moment? Love ya Mum!

Cheers everyone! It seems as though all I need is a love of music (tick) and some good mates (tick) and all will be good.

      Hi Daniel.

After that sort of ugly bird yesterday & monkeys today, I just do not know what is going through your head today!!  Only joking!!  What is this obsession with pictures of animals, anyway??

Sadly & most unfortunately after reading what Ben said about being very successful & productive while using “dope” & he did manage get his name in the Nosebleed section!!  Which is wonderful message to all of us!!

Today, we are on the the harmless story of “heroin users” which I have found interesting!!  I just would like to know if we are actually after solutions as well as teaching the young generation “HOW TO SAY NO TO DRUGS”!!

And in conclusion, if our kids as young as 13-15 years old are using drugs, their lives are not going to amount to very much, believe or not!!  There is not much hope of being SAVVY at anything, if they are using dope!!  Which has been proven as a fact , just like alcohol it actually destroys brain cells & alters your brain activity & chemistry!!

Practical understanding, being well informed and perceptive, are just side issues, really!!  For me personally, just seeing & working with my social worker friends, drug use is a dead end road which leads to nowhere!!  It only destroys young lives & that is all!!

I really want to know, if you can come with any purpose or benefit of using any kind of drugs while very young, please let me know?? Remember just being exposed to UV rays while very young can be the cause of worst kind of damage, when it comes to skin cancer!  That is just reality!!

Same could be said about drug use, if it begins during the fastest growth period of our actual brain which occurs up until the of 22 -23!!  After that age you may notice the fact we actually start losing brain cells, right??  That is if you have any brain cells left to lose, anyway!!  Best regards to your editors.

      @nossy - use BBcode.

It’s a bit erratic because only some of the codes work, and making a link converts all capitals to lower case. That’s just the renowned Punch blogging software being its inimitable self.

But the URL code usually works.

Proven as a fact - says who? You.

I’ve smoked pot daily for over 37 years and in that period I was a successful company director / manager of an international freight forwarding business (among other things) for 23 plus years.

Ben is just one story of many who can successfully combine good work / management with their recreational drug use.

You should try it one day…you may be surprised!

      Hi Knemon,

Thanks for the advice!! The information which you have actually provided may be useful to some!  I am personally very happy hear that you do use drugs to lift your spirits, on a daily basis!!  Now, I can see why Australians are making headlines around the world, when it comes to “the alleged drug smuggling charges”, no offence!!  I am sorry but I do not consider the likes of you, as role models for the general population, especially the very young!!

Since you have discussed all the benefits, may be you can have your own show, to entertain others. I am just curious to know, which company you were running & how big was this company??  I am certain,  that it was not a big corporation!!  Your own life style happens to be your own choice & business!!  That is OK with me!!  I am guessing that now you have retired, you do have more time to dedicate to your hobbies such as smoking dope.  In the mean time, I do have better things to do, with my own time!!  Best regards to your editors.

One thing that did happen in the news this week was the figures for arrivals by Illegal Entry Vehicles (SEIVS) - just short of 900 illegal entry arrivals by boat in November. the majority of these being Iranian’s who have, in the majority, been deemed to be middle class economic opportunists taking advantage of the softened policies (as the Australian wrote when citing an Immigration Department official). This is the largest number of arrivals in single month since the Tampa month in 2001.

You really need to be thanking Abbott for these arrivals.

His decision to not back changes to the constitution that would have allowed off shore processing has directly resulted in these arrivals.

Every asylum seeker who has arrived in Australia since Oct. 13, 2011 belongs to Tony Abbott.

Who would have thought Abbott would become the welcoming poster boy for Asylum seekers?

    • marley says:

      11:38am | 02/12/11

@ausspud - what no one seems to get, but I’m sure the smugglers do, is that the “quota,” whether it’s 13,750 or 20,000 - is entirely notional.  We’ve never had a big problem with asylum seekers, so we’ve always had plenty of room to “top up” the numbers by tossing in some offshore refugees to bring us up to a respectable figure.

At the moment,  of the 13,750 slots, 6,000 are allocated to offshore resettlements out of the camps, and the remaining 7,750 to a mix of offshore humanitarian cases and whatever asylum seekers we happen to get.  But if the number of asylum seekers increased to say, 10,000, that wouldn’t mean we’d be able to refuse to process the extra 2,250 - it would just mean we’d either cut our offshore numbers or we’d have to increase our numbers to 16,000.

We can’t apply a genuine target to the asylum seekers, because we’re obliged to give protection to all the genuine ones, regardless of how many there are.

    • NicoleG says:

      11:46am | 02/12/11

That’s right, it’s all Abbott’s fault. But answer this Einstein, Gillards Malaysian solution was a swap of 800 to Malaysia and 4000 here. What was to happen after they took 800? Where was she to send them after that? I am sorry, but this is Gillards screw up. She owns it, not Abbott.

I dunno fairs, a bit of skimpy lycra as a Spiderwoman costume could be just the thing. wink But anywho, good luck at the Docs - if it was a spider bite then I do hope it was an innocuous little thing that can do no harm.

    • EZ says:

      10:01am | 02/12/11

I got bitten by something on the cheek when I was in Africa and the doctor told me it was an infected mosquito bite that would clear up if I took these extremely powerful antibiotics for 3 weeks, did nothing so I self amputated the offending lump and it hasn’t given me problems since, there were a lot of jokes in the office about spiders having laid eggs in my face though smile

    • Anubis says:

      10:02am | 02/12/11

@ ausspud - there are much more enjoyable ways to combine DNA - just saying wink

@jay-ded, You need to get that bite checked out as my wife was bitten by a spider on the shoulder and it went like yours for about 3 or 4 days and then started to weep, she went to the doctors and he said it may have been a nasty one from the look of the infected area. She is on a course of tablets while she waits for the test to come back. Serious. Not meaning to scare you, but you should get it checked.

    • fairsfair says:

      01:02pm | 02/12/11

I survived. No antivenine required wink

Some sort of bite. Now infected. Has gone from a small red mark to what now resembles a horrific monkey attack in 24 hours. Right on my chinny chin chin. If only I could post a photo. Oh how you would all laugh.

      Serenity now.

    • TimB says:

      01:27pm | 02/12/11

@ ff - hold off on the photo until you invest in “a bit of skimpy lycra as a Spiderwoman costume”. Could make all the difference wink

@nihonin   in answer to your question nihonin 6 of one and half a dozen of the other!  No honestly the great Sir Peter Abeles who ran TNT for years always maintained “if you pay peanuts you get monkeys” and to be serious he was dead right nihonin so I dont begrudge pollies their payrise - but its fun to take the mickey anyway isnt it? I personally wouldnt be a pollie for quids - tough business being in the Public eye all the time - not for me so some admiration from me for all those who choose to do so nihonin. Cheers

Still not sure if I want to… I have a few more weeks to think about it. smile

    • Mark G says:

      10:49am | 02/12/11

      Yeah shags.

That will look awesome when you are like 60-70 years old and everyone has forgotten about the Harry Potter craze. You may as well get a girlfriends name tattooed on you.

    • Shenanigans says:

      01:17pm | 02/12/11

Totally getting that TimB (seriously I am)  set to get it in Feb :p that will bring my ink up to a total of 5.

If it looks any good but you’re not sure, get a small one in a descreet location Elp, like ankle, calf, or hip. If not go for broke :p

No I’m not, just a fan of classy designs. I wouldnt get a HP tattoo, not a fanboy.

To the haters, stop drinking the haterade bro’s, cause we all know, haters gunna hate

    • Elphaba says:

      01:46pm | 02/12/11

@Shen, one of the girls at work suggested the inside of the wrist, which I agree with. Small, discreet, and that skin stays smooth for ages compared to other parts of the body.

I still lean towards ‘no’ because I view a tatt as commitment, of which I’m not a fan - but we’ll see what happens over Xmas, lol

    • Michael says:

      02:03pm | 02/12/11

Elphaba, i don’t know if it’s still around, but a few years ago or so some people were getting ink that only showed up under black lights in clubs, that might be the best of both worlds if the design you like looked alright glowing, still discreet enough to meet your other needs wink

    • Mark G says:

      02:14pm | 02/12/11

      Shen,

If you want a cool tattoo like that the hogwarts crest, get your own family crest tattooed on you (if you have one).

I have a friend who is also a soldier who had his family crest tattooed on him because it is a way that he could take his family crest into battle like the knights of the middle ages. Thinking about doing that myself. Your own family crest never get old.

    • Elphaba says:

      02:29pm | 02/12/11

@Michael, I’ve seen that, I think one of the Wiggles has that done?  Very cool.  I would have to see if his guy does it.

@Shen, what Mark G said.  My crest is awesome.  And it has a motto. smile

    • Mark G says:

Ah wikileaks how we love your hypocrisy.

      http://www.news.com.au/technology/wikileaks-details-surveillance-industry/story-e6frfro0-1226212036626

The only problem with this new wikileaks venture is that some of this technology that they are claiming is sold to non government and overseas sources is in some cases exactly the same technology that wikileaks has used to hack government computers and spy on government agencies. Without this trade they themselves would not be as effective. Oh wait, sorry, they are the good guys, they are allowed to acquire private information whenever they want. It’s the bad guys that are not allowed to do that.

    • SimonFromLakemba says:

    • Mark G says:

      11:04am | 02/12/11

      SimonFromLakemba,

Yeah true. When you look a bit deeper on this issue It actually becomes apparent that this whole debate is more about undermining the other side rather than any real righteous debate about government secrecy or personal privacy. Its a battle between those who have power and those who want it. Not some idealistic campaign for the rights of individuals.

    • SimonFromLakemba says:

      12:49pm | 02/12/11

OK, so not firing jets of web from my wrist just yet - but can’t concentrate and just noted this on news.com.

      http://www.news.com.au/national/convicted-killer-jeffrey-gilham-benefits-from-forensic-failure-and-is-granted-a-retrial/story-e6frfkvr-1226211914141

I watched the Austrailan story on this one - very interesting. I will be keen to see how the re-trial pans out - particularly in relation to the way in which Gilham’s uncle has pushed so hard to have him convicted.

Between this and the Vikki Arnold and Julie-Anne Leahy inquest that is currently underway in Cairns, I am having uni withdrawals. God damn it why can’t you get a decent job with a degree in Criminology? Reviewing murder investigations and trial notes is actually interesting.

What, gay marriage is too mainstream for you?

    • Mark G says:

      02:24pm | 02/12/11

If they pass same sex marriage the feminists will claim that men are chauvinists because their marriages involve less than 100% women. Women will be held back from marriage in favour of another man. Only the best women will get married. Its a womens right to get married and no man gay or otherwise will get in their way. wink
