Following Andy Murray’s pretty convincing win in last night’s Australian Open semi-final The Punch now argues Australia must support the young Scot in the final. For one it has been 74 years since the last British male won a grand slam, and secondly Australia kind of killed their last champion.

Andy Murray, a British person not completely crap at tennis

If you are ever tempted to complain about the state of Australian tennis just remember this: the British are really, really bad. They even have to say British because as individual UK nations it would look even more pathetic.

While Virginia Wade won Wimbledon in 1977 for all the British ladies in the place, the last male Briton to win a grand slam was Fred Perry back in 1936. In 1936 the Nazis were running Germany and refrigeration was looked upon with the same awe as the iPad is today. Perhaps only bettered by Cronulla’s inability to ever win the premiership it’s one of the longest standing failures in sport.

By all accounts Perry was an amazing player who between 1933 and 1936 won eight of the old amateur grand slams, before turning professional and travelling around the world in a tent and wrestle Lucky Lindy, or whatever they did on those “professional sportsman” tours.

Perry also defeated a representative of the Third Reich in two Wimbledon finals, beating the fabulously named Baron Gottfried Van Cram, thus making him doubly the hero in English folklore.

(Although to be fair to Baron Van Cramm he didn’t like the Nazis. In fact he refused to become a poster boy for Hitler and as a result the Gestapo outed a gay relationship he had with a young Jewish actor and sentenced him to one year in prison, something that gave Britain and America reason to ban him from tournaments and stunted his career. At one point he also married the richest woman on earth. None of this has to do with anything much other to further illustrate the point that tennis used to be a hell of a lot more interesting)

Another reason the nation should get behind Murray is the fact that Australia was responsible for Fred Perry’s death. Well not quite, but he slipped in his hotel bathtub and died while he was in Melbourne to watch the Australian Open. Needless to say it’s been a bit awkward, so we probably owe the Brits on some level and if he wins here there’s a nice “circle of life” aspect to the whole thing.

Some fans may be a little torn as he could be up against Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final, a decidedly more exciting player and character than any of the other top tennis players at the moment. But given that Tsonga is up against Federer in the other semi-final it’s a choice that is likely to be made for us.

Murray is an odd-looking incongruous kind of an athlete. Even though he’s cut his hair and bulked-up a bit recently he still looks like a skinny and pasty Scottish teenager who should be smoking pot and listening to Tool. For this reason alone he is more deserving than that boring genius Roger Federer who has won everything there is to win.

But besides the blood money and historical rationale, the best reason for having Murray win the final is that he is the best player going around yet to win a grand slam tournament. Put simply the guy is due and so are the British.

Support a Pom in a sporting contest? Well, almost a Pom; a Scot, which is a litte better. You really are asking a lot! Particularly in a year when the Ashes are back in play. Had it been a guy from an impoverished African nation, then I would have considered your request a little more seriously.

So, is he British or Scottish? It will all depend on whether he wins the final.

    • Dan says:

      04:22pm | 29/01/10

He actually asked the english press why he was always described as a Brit when he won and a Scot when he lost. For my money he is a Scot which makes it alright to barrick for him (since he isn’t a smelly pom).

You can just see the pommy tabloids preparing their headlines: “Brit wins Aus Open” or “Scot goes down in Open” (a la Phar Lap)

Whatever happens to Murray, the poms may get a winner: Laura Robson plays the girls final. But then she’s an Aussie isn’t she?

To suggest that we should support a Brit in any sporting contest is so close to un-Australian, you should be ashamed Leo!

Let’s clear the air straight away. He’s Scottish, NOT English. How the English think they can get away calling him their own is beyond me.

As for this Great Britain thing, why can’t they harden up and compete as their own countries. I’m pretty sure we don’t walk with Kiwis at the opening ceremony of the Olympics, why should they?

On another note, did anyone see that Freddy Flintoff released a book on himself? What is it with second rate sportsmen & women thinking we actually want to read about their exploits (if you can call them that). Seriously Freddy, noone cares, you weren’t even good!

Murray, like myself and most of his fellow Scots, considers himself to be both Scottish and British.  That’s not good enough for some Little Englanders who will never forgive him for joking that he would support “anyone playing against England” at the 2006 World Cup. It’s also not good enough for the Little Scotlanders who try to project their narrow-minded chippy nationalism on Murray without any foundation. Oh well a plague on both their houses I say. And this whole “British if he wins, Scottish if he loses” is a lazy baseless cliche. If anything the London media is now overly sensitive to this subject due to the amount of Scottish blowhards moaning like drains about this imaginary slight. Aussies seem to get terribly confused by it all of a sudden, which is strange since a united Britain predates the landing of Cook at Botany Bay by 81 years, but it’s not a hard concept to get your head around. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the sovereign state which is made up of four historic countries. Due to the historic roles in inventing and codifying international sport there is dispensation for the home nations to compete separately in sports like football and rugby but in most others, like tennis, they compete as Great Britain. As the UK is a democracy the peoples of these countries are free at any election to “vote independence”. In over 300 years none have shown any inclination to do so. The upshot: A Murray victory on Sunday will be something all Scots, Britons and every fair sports fans around the world who enjoys magnificent tennis ability, can enjoy.

The recent ‘tension’ in UK politics notwithstanding (amazing how such an old democracy can still experience growing pains) the bragging oft-heard in Australia about multiculturism should be repeated in the UK, but usually isn’t (bragging is very poor form, chaps). Typically, an Englishmen is equally happy to see a Scotsman or Welshman win. The reverse is a little less likely, due to some minor misunderstandings a few hundred years ago when English kings had a bit of bother figuring out where ‘our’ bit ended and ‘their’ bit started. Generally speaking though, you’ll struggle to find an ‘amalgamated’  nation that gets along so well. Once the ‘Brits’ stopped running each other through with swords, they started to get along quite nicely, and things are still improving with greater representation of Scots and the Welsh in the UK parliament. Besides this, the UK is home to millions of citizens whose ‘bloodline’ originates in India (I get a huge kick out of hearing somebody obviously of Indian descent speak better english than many white european english), Pakistan, the Caribbean, asia, etc.

Given that Australia’s own diversity stems from largely voluntary, organised and legal migration, rather than hundreds of years of unpleasantness, tolerance of that diversity is hardly something to brag about.

Thanks TheSman for explaining why British/separate teams compete at different events, I’ve always wondered. But mate; “The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland”? Is that the official name of the country/nation/monarchy of which Murray is a citizen?

But no matter, Murray has neither an adequately defined accent nor the wide-eyed lunacy much beloved by the rest of world to be readily identified as Scottish. So if he wins may all you The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Irelanders rejoice in a rare sporting victory.

Personally, I’m looking forward with greater anticipation to a North Korea v South Korea World Cup finals.

TheSman- Nealry every scot i have met resents being called Brittish. They are scottish. And i don’t think Murray was joking when he said he “would support anyone who plays England”. That is a commonly held view from what i have seen, especially in Edinburgh where i have spent the most time.

    • TheSman says:

      03:53pm | 29/01/10

Indeed that is the nation he is a citizen of AT, grab Murray, or the next Brit backpacker you happen across and ask to see their passport and that’s exactly what will be on the front. As for “rare” victories I’m not so sure. England have beaten you at RWC 2003 & 2007, Scotland just beat you at rugby, we walloped you at Beijing Olympics, Ashes 2005 & 2009 (06/07 doesn’t count cos Freddy was on the keg!) How about the shortlist for BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2009? - Jenson Button (world F1 champ); Mark Cavendish (multiple Tour de France stage winner); Tom Daley (world diving champ, aged 16!); Jessica Ennis (world heptathlon champ, and a smokin’ hot babe to boot); Ryan Giggs (footie legend); David Haye (world heavyweight boxing champ); Phillips Idowu (world triple jump champ); Andy Murray (reached No 2 in world); Andrew Strauss (well, you know all about this one); Beth Tweddle (world gymnastics champ). Face it Oz, we have taken over your mantle as the “New East Germany” - until 2013 at least!!! That said AT I may be a proud Brit but when it comes to football I’m Scottish so England winning World Cup still not my idea of heaven (so sue me?) That all-Korea final sounds a topper. Bring it on!

Antihun, I don’t doubt that in your time in Edinburgh (my own home town) you met many Scots who say they are “scottish not british”, some truly believe it, that’s their call and I respect it so long as it isn’t based on puerile, misinformed anti-English bigotry, but for most it is just sporting banter. The truth is when it gets serious, ie voting, support for Scottish independence never gets above 25-30% in the polls (opinion and ballot box). That’s fact. Anyway I’m sure the 99% Australian readership of this site have little interest in UK internal politics, they have their own republic angst to deal with! p.s. Go Murray!

Of course he is British, he was born in Scotland, just like the last two British Prime Ministers, just like the current Chancellor, and just like our present Queen’s mother.  Like you Aussies the Scots never shut up about independence from the Crown and just like you, when push comes to shove they vote to stay British. But this anti Brit thing you have got going for you over in Aussie seems to be a way of hiding your sense of inadequacy.  The small dog always barks the loudest.  I love Australia, always have, and always will do.  But come boys and girls there are more things important in life than hating they nation who discovered your country and put you there by sending you ancestors there for unlawful sexual relations with various sheep and goats, or is that what’s Rudd’s ancestors were nicked for

Of course we all pull for you even at The US Open which I guess would appear odd if one didn’t consider your genius with that ball… BORING??? I think not but the one they’re rooting for here has no personality.. does he even ever smile! I live in the USA and This win is for you and Tsonga as runner up… Best of luck to you Roger Federer…You’re simply the best.  I’d root for Talent and personality before Country any day in this sport and in others as well.. how Murray got this far is beyond me in the talent part and the personality?? well, if he has one, it’s well hidden.. While Scots are fine people, they are still technically Poms, so it is not desirable for them to win anything. Just getting to a final is scary - it means they have an even chance of winning (in theory anyway). And William, it’s nothing to do with small dogs barking loudest. It’s the insufferable crap that the British tabloids go on with when one their own actually wins something, anything. If Andy does, by some freak chance, knock over Roger I’m sure the tabloids will be calling for a knighthood. The boofhead British government is likely to give him one.

So the Australian media does not go overboard when an Australian wins something? An Aussie wins anything or is involved in anything anywhere on the planet and our media are all over it.

200,000 people dies in Haiti, headlines in Australia are ‘Aussies Safe!’ As for awards, guess you missed out on a load of Aussie Cricketers getting AMs or OAMs last week then?

If we want to throw stones we really need to look at our self absorbed, self centred view of the world.

As for Murray, good look to him. Shame Lleyton is crap these days, porr little Bernard was up past his bed time and the women are useless. Maybe we wouldnt be whinging about a Brit winning if we were not so crap?

Andy should do it for the tennis-loving people of Great Britain.

For all those tens of minutes played on a barely visible, blood-stained gravel court, with your dad’s twice-used 15-year-old racket pilfered from behind the stack of 1970s porn kept in the shed, during the three days of the year the sun actually shines and everyone’s ordered by the nanny state government to pretend they give a flying monkey’s arse about Cliff Richard, posh tosspots and annoying Aussie backpackers at Wimbledon, and all the while a gang of cidered-up illiterate hoodied teenagers are sniffing glue, threatening and shouting obscenities at you, whilst chasing each other’s prams around the dog-turd strewn clump of mud and discarded Maccas wrappers called a park. 15-love!

      That’s why Britain loves tennis.

Much as it will hurt me to support a Pom, I’ll have no alternative if Murray is palying Federer.

Federer’s disgraceful performance last year when he broke down in tears after losing the final to Nadel was one of the worst acts of unsportsmanlike conduct I have seen.

No only did he take the limelight off Nadel when Nadel should have been basking in the glory of victory but he proved how incredibly lacking in persepective he was.

Federer is often complemented for his behaviour.

But the sign of a true champion is how they behave after a loss. It’s easy to be gracious when you are winning.

    • Marci M says:

Real men are not afraid to cry.. it shows they have emotions. Roger is all about the game and he doesn’t just play ‘to win’, he plays with his heart so a defeat like that cuts deep.
Had he not cried, which was a normal reaction, he would not be worth much as a man both on and off the court.
Nadel basked away in the glory quite well… Rogers tears most certainly didn’t take anything away from his victory. That is just a ridiculous statement. For the record, most of the world was pulling for Roger anyway and still is.
A true Champion as you put it,is sincere and not afraid to show pain as well as happiness.
Have you no concept of what being human and feelings are all about??

Every so often we can’t stop ourselves and have to let go of a “manly” tear or two, However Fed’s performance/waterworks while Nadel was giving his winning speach last year was a discrace, before that match I was a fan of Fed, sure he cried sometimes when he won a grand slam (he was very happy) but to spoil somebody elses moment by crying (how many grand slams has he won?) the man is a tool
