We’ve lost a good one. And when we say “we”, we don’t just mean “we” of the journalistic fraternity but we the Australian public.

We could sum Harves up in as many words as the internet can hold, but the three words in the headline say it all. When he signed off with his dulcet “Peter Harvey, Canberra”, it was a sign that you’d just heard a report you could trust. No doubt it had been a story colourfully told too.

Our thoughts this evening are with Harvey’s family, including his daughter and our News Ltd colleague Claire Harvey. We welcome you to leave your thoughts below, and you can also read more about Peter Harvey at news.com.au.

A sad loss for journalism and the country, but with a distinguished career spanning half a century, he leaves a proud and indelible legacy in Australia’s media history.

How come he never had his own show ?
      Jana Wendt had one.

‘Meet The Press’ seems to me to be an ideal program for a serious Journalist as host, and Peter should have been offered such an important post because he had been there, seen things, felt things and reported for us all.
Why aren’t the best put in the best positions ?
And forget about personalities that are publicly consumerable ; we want the best who know what they are talking about.
      We know what to consume.

So sorry to hear of his passing.

    • Pete says:

The word is ‘dying’. ‘Passing’ is a sanitised Americanism that presumes you know what happened to him after his death, which you don’t. ‘Death’ is natural, don’t be afraid to use it. With Harvey’s clear thinking, I’m sure he’d laugh at someone describing his death as his ‘passing’!

    • Horthy says:

The word is ‘think’. Surety is a sanitised Americanism that presumes you know what he would have thought (on that, pluperfect is a better verb form here) . Ambiguity is natural, don’t be afraid to use it.

Funnily enough, Peter Harvey was a Christian- not that many people would know that. His Daughter mentioned it in his Obituary.

Peter Harvey was one of the few people in the media that the public could trust to report politics in a truly bipartisan manner.  The absolute epitomy of journalistic integrity.

The new catchcry should be “cause Peter Harvey told us so”.

      Vale Mr Harvey.

RIP Peter. Our thoughts with your family.

With so few decent journalists he was a loss we didn’t need. Seems to always be the way, you get left with the dregs. RIP dude.

I fondly remember his alter ego Peter Gravy too.

I am very sorry to hear that Peter Harvey has just passed away. I greatly admired him.
My sincere condolences to his family, you have lost a truly great man but one consolation is his magnificent contribution to Australian television, current affairs and journalism.
Rest in Peace, Peter. I will miss see you on TV and hearing that familiar voice. God bless you, sir.

Peter Harvey was a trusted and respected journalist because, unlike some in the journalistic fraternity, his stories were credible and factual, not blatant opinion pieces. He will be missed. My condolences to his family. RIP

My thoughts are with his family and friends.

Such sadness. Thoughts and sympathy for his family, friends and everyone in Australian journalism.
I grew up watching Peter Harvey when dad used to watch every evening news programme - and as a child, Peter taught me to appreciate & enjoy quality news reporting and journalism.
Thank you Mr Harvey for your gentleness, your authority, your passion, your integrity and your sincerity. You will be utterly missed.  RIP.

Vale Peter Harvey. An honest journo who reported what he witnessed, and didn’t embellish the story, and not in a narcisistic way. I recall comedians exaggerating his closing line as, “Peter Harvey, Cannnnnbraaaa”.

    • Arnold Layne says:

      01:42pm | 03/03/13

RIP Peter Harvey.  Rather than just having the respect of your peers and the public, I hope your legacy is that those journos who looked up to you try to emulate your professionalism and not just fill the air with empty words.

      You’ll be missed.

Behind every great man, there is a great family and you Peter had that love and support from your family, for with out them we would not have had such a great Media personality. Your worked was admired to the highest standard, we trusted you and your reports, your honesty twinged with humor, all amounted to a great journo. We welcomed you into our lounge rooms, never thinking once about hitting the button to turn you off. If Perer was reporting it, then it was important to watch.
While our thoughts and hearts are with your family right now, in time they will gain support by knowing you were loved and respected by all Australians.

      RIP- Peter

Poor old Pete, eh. Another journalistic gem genius bites the dust. Didn’t realise that only good people are journalists. Dulcet means soft and pleasant, not rough harsh abrasive.

    • vox says:

Some people have the ability to write, as against speak in soft and pleasant tones. Some others are only able to write in a rough, harsh, and abrasive manner. Some can’t write at all.
My thoughts are with his family.
Having worked with Harves on a couple of occasions, I can only speak well of him. A true pro, and one who was always happy to share a by-line.
He made my life better just from knowing him, and yes, he will be sorely missed.
      ‘Bye Harves

    • Harquebus says:

I don’t think that Peter Harvey was that great. The rich are richer, the poor poorer, politicians still lie to us and journalists continue to let them get away with it. Our resources are being plundered, the environment is being polluted, we are being poisoned, there are too many of us and the planet is heating up.
So what did he do that was that great? In my opinion, journalists overrate themselves.
Peter Harvey was another journalists who could have made a difference and didn’t.

    • Another Chris says:

To be fair to someone who can no longer argue back himself. I’m sure he’d say, “have a read of my articles” ... No doubt there are thousands of them. Peter Harvey, like good Journo’s investigated and revealed things to the Public that we may never have known about….

    • Another Chris says:

RIP Peter, you were a familiar sight on my Sunday nights growing up as a Kid. Your sign off is forever etched into my Mind as well as your Stories.
      Rest In Peace Sir.
