I cried watching Ghost. But then I cried at the end of Platoon, so maybe I’m not the best judge of a movie’s weep-inducing capabilities.

“Ditto,” though, is surely one of the great one-word one-liners. Patrick Swayze‘s character in Ghost, Sam, couldn’t bring himself to tell Molly he loved her, and used the phrase whenever she said “I love you.”

It’s at the top of our list of the most memorable quotes from Swayze, who has died of cancer. He was 57. We’re looking for your input to build the list so add your suggestions and discuss your favourite Swayze moments in the comments.

Top Patrick Swayze Movie Quotes

1. “Ditto” (Sam, Ghost). Absolutely has to make the list of best one-liners of all time.

2. “Look, spaghetti arms. This is my dance space. This is your dance space. I don’t go into yours, you don’t go into mine. You gotta hold the frame” (Johnny Castle, Dirty Dancing). Colourful, concise.

3. “Pain don’t hurt.” (Dalton, Roadhouse). The tough Swayze.

4. “Nobody puts baby in a corner” (Johnny, Dirty Dancing). See the crowd reaction to the video at the top of this post.

5. “If you want the ultimate, you gotta be willing to pay the ultimate price” (Bodhi, Point Break). There are many quotes that could have made it from Point Break, but this makes the grade because of the way his hair moves mid-quote. (Skip forward to see it at 1m 03s in this clip.)

He was the greatest actor ever and the world is a lesser place for his tragic passing, I suggest renaming Sydney Harbour Bridge in his honour and projecting his filmic legacy onto the Opera House Roof.

Matt if you new what pancreatic cancer was really like, and have watched someone die from it, you wouldn’t have made the comment, and you would understand why he was “weeks away from death”. When he made his miraculous recovery, I predicted then it wouldn’t be long til he succumbed to the evilness of the disease. RIP PS, you fought hard like many before you and many to come. Many memories x

Big effing deal. The man was almost universally acknowledged as a hilariously poor actor, and was in a couple of minor hits around 20 years ago. Who cares?

Some of the comments that have appeared do seem to be slightly harsh.  Whilst Swayze was certainly no Laurence Olivier, he did bring a lot of pleasure to a lot of people and this is the sole justification I can find for the obscene amounts of money Hollywood actors etc get paid.  Up until his cancer diagnosis, you hardly heard of his private life and unlike many , many of his co-stars he didn’t get a rep for promiscuity, illicit drug taking or a bad relationship with the media.  Pancreatic cancer is a dreadful scourge and whilst he didn’t apparently lead the healthiest of lifestyles, he hardly deserved to go out like this, as is the case with everyone.  Regardless of the lifestyle one leads, drink to excess, smoke etc, a modicum of respect should be afforded to the deceased and his family until at least the body has been cremated.

    • Theresa says:

some of the comments on here are nothing short of crass. Darren and Arthur, you’re dead set wankers. Just because Swayze’s movies didn’t involve anal goat rooting which no doubt is more up your alley, it doesn’t give you permission to voice your pathetic opinions on such a sad occassion. One day when you have to watch a loved one die from cancer i hope you feel remorse for making light of Swayze’s passing. Now get back to your pig porn and grow up

    • Mrs Lovejoy says:

Whenever I’m stuck in traffic the words of Bodhi in Point Break always come to me and make me wish I was anywhere else ... “We are here to show those guys that are inching their way on the freeways in their metal coffins that the human sprit is still alive.”

    • Butterman says:

      03:40pm | 15/09/09

Theresa, I don’t see why you feel the need to denigrate Darren, Arthur, anal goat rooting and pig porn.

Firstly, Darren and Arthur were just voicing the opinion that Swayze was a B-grade, shithouse actor; a fact that cannot be denied. I don’t think they were making light of Swayze’s death; it is not funny, however his movies were a bit of a joke.

As for anal goat rooting and pig porn, I take it that you have experienced both. If not, your opinion is ill-informed and you do not have the requisite experience required to put forward said opinion; I can state, uncategorically, that there is nothing better than rooting animals anally, except perhaps watching bestial porn.

RIP Patrick Swayze. Your movies will no longer offend our sensibilities.

Hi Kate, although in the case of Patrick Swayze I might agree - otherwise I find that if you cant say something nice about someone, you’d better say something mean. (Ted Kennedy said that.)

Alot of horrible words here from people.  Just becuase you didnt find this man’s movies and acting a joy to watch, doesnt give you the right to say such harsh words.  I enjoyed his movies and i am glad to have been around in the same generation as this wonderful Man.  He was a true gentleman who didnt let Hollywood and Fame take over his private life.  He has stayed loyal to his wife and must have one of the longest lasting marriages in the film industry?  Sadly missed and you will not be forgotten by your fans.
Its unbelieveable that people can speak of the deceased in such a negative way like some people here - something must be definelty lacking in their life to crucify someone who has deceased.

Jed Eckert: Do you want blindfolds?
Stepan Gorsky: This violates the Geneva convention.
Jed Eckert: I never heard of it!

...and the cinematographic masterpiece that is Point Break:

Bodhi: You’re about to jump out a perfectly good airplane Jonny, how do you feel about that?

Bodhi: Yo, Johnny! I see you in the next life!

      RIP Mr Swayze.

      Dear upsetees,
Celebrity cannot be all adulation, applause and prizes - there should always be a balancing, and derision is a perfectly legitimate counterweight.  Because of the web, non-consensual opinions can now be heard, which is a blast of clean air to the stale micro-managed PR industry mascarading as news.

    • Butterman says:

      08:32pm | 15/09/09

Sonia, I have to ask - if nobody cares what we say or think, then why are people replying? Ow fk he is correct.

Now, nobody here is saying that PS DESERVED to die, as far as I read. Furthermore, nobody here is denigrating the man himself.

I think what is being said (and it is fairly irrefutable) is that he was an absolutely terrible actor.

I felt the same way watching some of his movies as I do when people yell words of encouragement at me while I masturbate. Ashamed, helpless and trying to reach a conclusion that seems to only get further away.

    • Lonleymum says:

      10:50pm | 15/09/09

To be fair i think we all have opions on his acting, but to us that loved him we will and do think he was great.Thats what we will always feel and to those of you who choose to think other wise thats up to you, but dont make fun of or degrade his life you have no right to do that, unless you are GOD and i dont think thats so!!  He had a gentle way about him and was a very sexy man who i am sure did not know just how sexy he really was. Also he private life was just that private, unlike many who sell picures and storys to the tabloids to fill there sad lonley lives and indulge in having obscene amounts of money that they spend on whims. So maybe we should all take a moment to think how sad his family must be feeeling at this very sad time, and think do they need all the ill voiced comments. No matter what we think or feel about him, he has gone and the there aare those whos lives will be sadder because of this. So to end i say May you now rest in peace Mr Swayze. Also hope that in time the pain will ease for your family and they will begin to remember you in better times. Love you and thank you for all the great films you gave us. Ghost and Dirty Dancing being my all time favourite.

To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar.  Swayze played a great drag queen.  All right, he wasn’t a great AC-TOR (in Gielgud voice) but he was professional and made the most of what he had.  Why get bitter and twisted because a matinee idol playing light parts isn’t Olivier?  (By the way, Olivier would have been the first to tip his hat to a competent jobbing performer).

    • Dan says:

Patrick Swayze was a good actor, a courageous soul, and a good example. He wasn’t the best actor in the world or in history, but how is that relevant when looking at memories and legacy he left behind for all of us. He made me laugh and cry in almost every movie of his I saw.

On the flip side of everything positive that comes with an open forum, the right to free speech and the freedom to express opinions, its just kind of expected that if you are adult enough to exercise these rights, you also have the common decency and decorum to do it responsibly and tactfully. To the crass and disrespectful, a universal justice will repay. You should be old enough to realize that to behave recklessly and thoughtless is an admission of weakness and an invitation for life and the universe to deal you a lesson or two in humility.  Patrick Swayze was a good man, a cultural icon, and a portrait of courage. I celebrate his life, his legacy and offer my empathetic condolences to his family and my fellow fans.

This man was an Amazing actor, dancer, singer and Human Being. Not many people are married to the same person for over 30 years.
