While we officially record our sorrow at the passing of Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett - and anyone else who’s carked it in the past 20 minutes or so - it’s worth noting the terminal case of death-mania which has struck the media today.

Leading the charge was Richard Wilkins on Channel Nine who aired the hoax story that Jeff Goldblum had died, apparently from a fall. Nine boldly declared Goldblum to be deader than disco and ran with the story for a full ten minutes before airing new details which had come to hand, namely that the star of The Fly and Jurassic Park was considerably less dead than originally feared.

The official, pissed-off word came on Twitter from Kevin Spacey.

RT @KevinSpacey: Jeff Goldblum is alive and well. I just spoke to his manager. Stop these stupid rumors.

Twitter is currently a moshpit. Here’s a sample of tweets from the Day of the Dead, ranging from the tasteless to the informative to the indignant…

@dfg77 Richard Wilkins credibility is DEAD! (I jest, that happened years ago)

Trish1981Gah, now when Jeff Goldblum really DOES die, no one is going to believe it!

@jorcervanRT @iheartchaos: RIP michael jackson, you weird, weird bastard

@TwitWilloLarry King drops special Farrah Fawcett program for Michael Jackson night.. again poor Farrah!

@clubwah: It’s been announced that Michael Jackson’s body will be melted down to make plastic toys so kids can play with him for a change

@SEOAly: If you can’t find the decency to have respect for the dead, at least have empathy for their loved ones’ loss & shut the fuck up.

6390 people die every hour. Being crass about 1 dead plasticised “star” helps us cope with the shame of not caring for the other 6299. Now what are we going to about MJ? rinse and recycle or landfill?

Hey Realto! Its Coker-Godson not Coker-Dodgson.  I hope I did imbue somebody with a sense of shame although I accept that with some people that isn’t possible since they have no sensitivity or respect for the deceased or their family. I had a near fatal brush with cancer in March 2009 with 2/3rds of my stomach removed because of a large tumour.  I know very well what its like to be half dead I can assure you and its not simple or funny.

Hi Julie Coker-Dodgson. Scientific studies have shown that when any group of people makes light of death, one of the group will sound a sombre note and try to induce a sense of shame in response. Thanks for providing further evidence for the hypothesis. Leon at 11:23 am - if I am nearly dead I will be afraid of dying, probably. Until then, not. Pretty simple really.  O death where is thy sting, o grave thy victory?

When you have spend a night or two in an intensive care ward fighting for your life, or suffered a lingering & terminal illness, death won’t be such a joke. The Monty Python skit is taken out of context and inappropriate.

Almost like hysterical ghoulish pleasure of knowing you are young and alive while someone famous wealthy and hugely talented has died. A kind of envy. I wonder what Freud would say, corpsescomplex maybe.

Farrah Fawcett, Michael Jackson ..... and from an American public forum I am involved with…. Ed McMahon passed away the day before those 2 mentioned.
Ed McMahon - for those of you old enough, he was the sidekick to Johnny Carson

Oops. Michael’s wax dummy, meant to be unveiled in July, is missing from Tussaud’s. Meanwhile, Michael is spotted at a bar in Havana.

I feel sorry for Farrah Fawcett and her family . Today was her day. She’s been a B grade actress most of her life. Has the terrible misfortune to be diagnosed with the killer C.  Bravely makes a doco about her death to help others understand cancer. And in her final part when she gets to be the A lister, along comes Jacko and upstages her.
Sympathy to all family and friends of all people whom have passed away.

Jeez!  I can not believe some of the comments on this blog!  What has happened to our sensitivities for the survivors of the deceased?  Personally, I think it is a very sad day for both the music and acting industries.  Whatever else anyone may think of Michael Jackson, it would be mean spirited to deny he was a gifted musician, not to mention a very fine hoofer.  I would have liked to have seen him dancing alongside Gene Kelly.  I, for one,  find it a very sad day.

I suspect the Jackson family vultures are circling as I type, thinking about royalties. Of course, once they see his debts, they will quickly turn their attention to squeezing a few dollars out of Janet, the only solvent one in the family.
