Independent MP Rob Oakeshott is not a man known for being succinct. But today in just 28 words he’s muddied the political waters in Canberra.

Oakeshott, one of the cross-benchers the Government relies on to stay in power, released a statement in response to numerous inquiries for his position on tensions in the Labor Party.
The short statement ended: “But if the Labor Party is more interested in focusing on the next election, then I will do what I can to oblige them with that next election.”
The Punch rang Oakeshott’s office to find out what that meant, but things were less clear after the conversation with his media advisor than before.
She insisted it was “not a threat”, but couldn’t explain what, if any, action Oakeshott was contemplating when he said “I will do what I can to oblige them with that next election”.
Although she did point out his commitment to Julia Gillard extended only as far as guaranteeing supply, not automatically supporting all legislation.
It all sounds sort of threat-like.
Perhaps to wind things back a bit, this afternoon Oakeshott did an interview with the ABC where he said: “There’s a whole range of ways this could play itself out - that is a choice for the Labor Party today”.
Again, not helping with the clarity.
If this is designed to help Julia Gillard he might want to be more specific.
