Julia Gillard could not be looking forward to Parliament resuming next week. Well may she relish another round of hand to hand gender combat with Tony Abbott. But there are two other blokes she has to deal with and neither of them is yet to be declared a misogynist.

Remind me again why you shafted me… Photo:Gary Ramage

One is obviously Craig Thomson. The other is just as obvious - Kevin Rudd.

There may be no man in Parliament who has unwittingly inflicted more political damage on the Gillard Government than Thomson and his former corrupt employer, the Health Services Union. But there is no man in Parliament who harbours a greater desire to deliberately cause political damage to Gillard herself, than Rudd.

Both are problems of Labor’s own making and yet the PM shows no apparent sign of having a strategy to deal with them.

If Craig Thomson is charged, as has become a possibility following the show-trial police raid of his central coast home this week, the situation for the PM becomes more complex.

It will be harder to defend Coalition attacks that the Government is relying on a “tainted” vote. The presumption of innocence won’t matter politically – despite the obvious offence to the voters of Dobell that they be denied a voice in Parliament for the remainder of the electoral cycle.

Then there is the release of former Labor MP Maxine McKew’s book next week.

It may be an old story, but the suggested revelations of Gillard’s real involvement in knifing Rudd in 2010 will again publicly test Gillard’s integrity and credibility against that of Rudd.

The Gillard camp clearly has no idea how to deal with the former PM – other than a vague plan to crush him, before he crushes her.

That would be a fine, albeit crude strategy to adopt except for one problem.

Several weeks ago, the NSW Labor party secretary Sam Dastyari delivered some grim news to NSW Federal Labor MPs who are on margins of around or under seven per cent – which is a lot of them.

In fact there are 12 seats on or below seven per cent. There are another four on margins not much more than that including Immigration Minister Chris Bowen and Environment Minister Tony Burke.

Dastyari, according to one marginal seat MP, told them bluntly that the party was so cash strapped that all campaign resources would be shovelled into seats it knows it can hold and needs to – Jason Clare’s seat of Blaxland being one of them.

The MP was told that the party didn’t want to repeat the election campaign mistakes of Queensland where resources were spread too thin across all seats and instead was going to sandbag its future crop of leaders.

In other words, many NSW MPs are now being told that they are on their own. It’s every marginal man and woman for themselves.

It’s hardly surprising then, that the one resource that some of these MPs know they can get for free is Rudd.

Gillard’s camp may be oblivious to what has happened to Labor’s vote in Sydney over the past five years, but local MPs aren’t.

When Abbott turned up to an ethnic Chinese event in Rooty Hill last week – deep in the heart of Labor’s seat of Chifley held by Ed Husic – it was part of a strategy that has been in play by the NSW Liberals for some time.

They have been quietly working away at stealing Labor’s other true base – the ethnic vote - since the 2007 NSW State election loss. And they have been very successful.

At the last federal election, the ethnic booths in south west Sydney seats such as Watson, Banks, Barton, McMahon and even in Reid and Werriwa in the greater west, got smashed

There were reported swings of more than 20 per cent in some of these booths covering ethnic communities of Chinese, established Greek and Italian communities, and newer migrant groups.

Labor MPs such as Husic and Daryl Melham (Banks) know Rudd’s appeal among some of their constituents.

A year ago it may have been true that Rudd had been inviting himself to tea just to cause trouble. It is now the other way around.

The reason is simple. Rudd is popular among ethnic communities. Many don’t understand why he was rolled in the first place and don’t identify with Gillard’s politics.

The irony of the Gillard strategy to try and kill Rudd off is that they also kill off one of Labor’s most effective campaign assets.

While there is a valid argument that Rudd should be brought back into the tent, Gillard will never sanction it, as it would be too much of a threat to her own leadership.

In any case, the prospect of Rudd being happy to throw away that baton in his backpack and be used in this way is not just unlikely but improbable – even if it were to deliver him a moral victory in the end.

The way he has been treated by his former Cabinet colleagues has guaranteed it.

Are you still a misogynist if you dislike one woman?

yes. Or as said by the great Principal Seymour Skinner

Skinner: “Today, we celebrate the first of many, many, many, many diversity forums. Why is it that women ‘appear’ to be worse at math than men? What is the source of this ‘illusion’ or as I call it, the biggest lie ever told.”

Lindsey Naegle: “You’re a worse version of Hitler!”

Skinner: “Please believe me. I-I understand the problem of women.” (he moves from behind the podium revealing he’s wearing a purple dress and purple heels) “See.” (the audience gasps)

Nelson: “Ha, ha!” (sing-songy) “The principal’s a tranny.”

Skinner: “Am I wearing women’s clothes? I didn’t notice. When I look in my closet, I don’t see male clothes or female clothes. They’re all the same.”

Edna Krabappel: “Are you saying that men and women are identical?”

Skinner: “Oh, no, of course not! Women are unique in every way.”

Lindsey Naegle: “Now he’s saying men and women aren’t equal!”

Skinner: “No, no, no! It’s the differences of which there are none that makes the sameness exceptional. Just tell me what to say!”

If it suits the lying sexist defence (slanderous attack) utilized by Gillard and the ALP women, the answer is a big fat YES.

Sexist - any person even remotely critical of Julia Gillard and her life and work related disasters.

This is why Slipper, who described women in the worst possible terms, can be defended by Gillard without fear of contradiction or criticism for double standards.

This is why its ok to have sexist jokes at Union Dinners, where Opposition women are ridiculed sexually without comback.

Wishful speculation?  Let us look at the possibilities:
Kevin Rudd might make another leadership challenge.
Craig Thompson might commit annother mass murder and be tried early.
      And
Slipper might give the LNP his vote after they shat on him big time.
Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha - just joking !

It’s not the HSU that is corrupt as you suggest, but the people in it! And the people in it are ALP members and fund and direct the party.

    • Christian Real says:

      08:17am | 26/10/12

      Dash
I am an ALP member and I am not corrupt as you suggest of ALP members being corrupt.
I hereby demand Dash that you make an immediate apology to me and other ALP members.
I am not in the HSU, but I believe that like every other Australian citizen, Craig Thompson is innocent until proven otherwise.
Thompson’s lawyer is correct, and can seek defamation from those who are unjustly and unfairly bagging Thomson.
It is up to our legal system, our courts to judge a person innocence or guilt,it is not up to media, radio or Tony Abbott and his Liberal/National party opposition,or Liberal supporters to run a kangaroo court or trial by media,or trial by Federal Parliament upon craig Thompson ,Slipper or anyone else.
While I don’t condone the current going on’s inthe HSU, I also don’t condone those that have already condemned Thompson & Slipper in their minds as being guilty, when both of these men have not yet had a fair trial or a fair hearing in a Court of Law.

    • AdamC says:

      08:45am | 26/10/12

Christian Real, if you think Craig Thomson is suing anyone for defamation any time soon, you are wrong.

The ALP’s conduct in respect of both Thomson and Williamson has been a study in how to act without integrity. Were the same standards applied elsewhere, we would still have Lance Armstrong listed in the records as the great Tour de France winner ever. After all, he hasn’t yet been convicted of a criminal offence. We would have a lot less de-frocked priests as well.

    • glenm says:

      08:55am | 26/10/12

      @ Christian,
Yes they need a fair trial, but that is a completely different issue to whether they are of good enough moral character to be representatives of the people.  It seems a little strange that we all accept that footballers that are charged with bringing the game into disrepute can be stood down without conviction or even for activity that is not illegal, but a politician is Ok until they are actually found guilty.
Guilt or innocence is not the issue , the issue is are these people suitable community representatives.  Given that both now sit as independants it would seem to me that both major parties have already condemned them, they will not be preselected in those seats at the next election. Given that, why is it that the public must sit back and accept these two retain taxpayer funded salaries for another 12 months?  We should not have to cop it, if they had any sense of self respect they would resign from parliment.  Apparently Lance Armstrong is guilty , he just wont admit it, sponsors have left him the world has condemned him, but he still hangs on , all are calling for Lance to come clean. Now all we need is the same calls to be applied to Slipper and Thomson.

      Christian Real,

I suggest you read Dash’s comment again and not just “... corrupt ... ALP members ...”. You might be surprised to find that he makes reference to HSU.

    • jg says:

      10:40am | 26/10/12

And if certain ALP members are found guilty will Gillard and other apologists like yourself say sorry?

      I somehow doubt it.

    • Tell It Like It Is says:

      01:09pm | 26/10/12

Oh that’s a silly thing to say @Glenn. You know! For so many of them if they get stood down they would lose their big fat pensions, which they receive regardless of the most appalling performance or behaviour, even criminal sometimes.

    • Stephen T says:

      03:52pm | 26/10/12

@Christian Real:  “I am an ALP member and I am not corrupt as you suggest of ALP members being corrupt.”

No but from your comments and seeming defence of the issue you present yourself as countenancing poor standards of governance.

“I am not in the HSU, but I believe that like every other Australian citizen, Craig Thompson is innocent until proven otherwise.”

A perfectly correct assumption, however considering the standards that he is supposed to represent he should like every other public servant be stood aside while his case is being prosecuted.

“Thompson’s lawyer is correct, and can seek defamation from those who are unjustly and unfairly bagging Thomson.”

That would be an interesting case; the information relating to Thompson that is currently under discussion is in the public domain. All references have been to the allegations presented and I believe that you will find that nothing has been said by any party that isn’t corroborated by some form of objective evidence.

“It is up to our legal system, our courts to judge a person innocence or guilt, it is not up to media, radio or Tony Abbott and his Liberal/National party opposition ,or Liberal supporters to run a kangaroo court or trial by media, or trial by Federal Parliament upon craig Thompson ,Slipper or anyone else.”

This to me demonstrates the total hypocrisy of your argument, you plead for temperance in respect to Craig Thompson yet you condone Julia Gillard’s slander of Tony Abbott while protected by parliamentary privilege.  You would perhaps have a modicum of credibility if you were equally vehement in your condemnation of Julia Gillard actions.

Our Kevin is obviously one who holds grudges and we all know that people who hold grudges are not on a good wavelength. From what i have read and heard, Kevin never challenged Ms Gillard as he was unpopular within the party because he treated people in a bad way and they wouldn’t work with him. So, if that’s the case then it is all the fault of Mr Rudd because of his one man band personality problem. He just can’t work in a team.

Now, if that is the case how would he survive in the business community outside of parliament.? So, going on all the time about how Mr Rudd was stabbed is getting boring and incorrect and feeds untruth into the voting community. Is this using the punch to push the Liberal agenda.? If so, why are punch Journalists so naive as to keep pushing these buttons. It may well be that the Punch is more pro Liberal than Labor. Is doing all this Legal.? Is it discriminatory against Julia Gillard.?

Mr Rudd dropped his good Portfolio as Foreign Minister to test the water and seek re election as leader and he failed in his resolve, lost his what is a great job and went to the backbench again. Kevins fault.! It seems that he is his own worst enemy. So, he was PM, not popular, and still not popular. Ms Gillard was his Deputy and as Deputy was the next in line regardless. So, she took over. What’s the problem. She is trying to do a good job and has some successes.

I think that it’s getting rather boring and i note the punch journalists are good at speaking for others and there is a lot of egotistical presumption in their writings on here. They are obviously Liberal propagandaists. Serving the Liberal party well in the media.

And this business about women haters. Misogynist, a new word discovered and bantered around all the time. Why not just write, people who hate women so the ordinary folk can understand. Very trendy to use these words. Write it as it is in a sentence so people can understand properly. Or write those men who pathologically hate women and its opposite or those women who hate men in the same way.

All this rubbishing of Ms Gillard defeats the good Governance of the country and helps to destroy in a way the society which has many problems already as we all know. Stop it and quit and give the correct information and not the incorrect all the time. God, those Liberals will do anything to get hold of the reigns of Government, stoop to anything they will. Don’t get my vote. Try decency for a change won’t you. Stop feeding the chooks with lies and inuendo. Get a grip on the truth and report the truth and not the Liberal line. Is there anything that this PM has done that would have a positive meaning and outcome which would make you happy?. Why not report that if there is anything. There must be something, it can’t be all bad.

I noticed that Turnbull is the preferred leader amongst conservative voters now. It’s only a matter of time. If the faceless men of the liberal party leave it too long, Labor might call a snap election when they act and catch them off guard with all their policies up in the air.

All this discussion about Rudd is akin to ” changing deck chairs on the Titanic”. Labor politics is now about relativism, and as such, no universal truths can be discussed or vision articulated in the political discourse. It’s down to he said, she said, point scoring, the meaning of words in dictionary’s and so on. The result is no policy direction. Why people think this Christian Boy Scout with an over inflated ego and a bad temper is above the average is beyond me. Give him a job at the UN where he can do some real damage.

I think the whole political system is on the nose and the whole of Labor smells, it’s not just the leaders. The liberals are only spared by not being in power.

A whole lot of work went on behind the scenes by others to help him look good and to cater to his demands. The old duck on the pond, hardly a ripple on the surface but the legs are paddling furiously.
All very well until the legs get fed up with the tantrums,  the stress and little thanks.
Sure Gillard and a whopping majority of Labor MPs kicked his butt to the backbench where he’s been licking his wounds ever since.
He’s a crowd puller with great speaking skills, and no doubt he has an entourage of ego masseurs.
But the reality is he lacks the temperament for good leadership. He should knuckle down, get the ego under control and accept his delegated place in the party.
Turnbull should get over himself and likewise accept his fate.
