Kyle officially now off the air
You know when a girlfriend or boyfriend says they think it’s time for a break? There’s hints of that in this, from Kyle Sandilands’ manager tonight after it was announced the Kyle and Jackie O show would not be broadcast tomorrow morning:
Kyle has decided not to go on air for the week and we’ll assess our position as the week unfolds.
Saying you’re assessing your position in your work life is like the “time for a break” moment in a relationship. It’s never good, and always sounds like the beginning of the end. At best, it means something is horribly wrong.
If it’s true, as we’ve been told by Austereo and now Kyle’s management directly, that the broadcaster himself has called a temporary halt to the show, then it indicates the fallout from the on-air revelation that a teen guest had been raped when she was 12 years old has had a significant effect on him.
You never know, he might have even grown something resembling a conscience.
There have been few boundaries on the content of the Kyle and Jackie O show. Masturbation, misogyny, ignorance, buffoonery - nothing has been off limits to the audience and advertisers.
Nothing, that is, except rape.
In the normal course of events where scandals are milked for all they’re worth as PR exercises, you could expect the statement from Austereo to be followed by a “He’s Back” announcement, with Kyle’s voice back on the radio in your kitchen or car by Tuesday morning.
Remember, guys like Sandilands trade on controversy and have hides like jockeys’ butts.
But his manager’s comment tonight suggests the axing of the show is now a serious option.
We’re running a Punch poll on this – you can find it on the right-hand-side of the home page, asking how long you think Kyle should stay off air. Cast your vote there.
Also on The Punch tonight, David Penberthy has charted how the outrage over this put the kybosh on the show.
Let us know what you think in the comments. Over to you.
