The Punch team will be live-blogging between 2.15pm and 4pm (AEST) as the Governor-General addresses MPs and Senators in Canberra this afternoon. In the likely event that it’s horrendously boring we can just have a general discussion about what’s going to happen in this parliament. Do join us.

Man, I wish I could join in on this from work. The Cover It box seems to be blocked on the company internet though.

Let me know if anything interesting happens.

Prediction: One or more newspaper bloggers or commentators will cite uncivilised or rowdy behaviour of MPs as evidence that the ALP minority government cannot work.
Deadline: Close of business Tuesday 5 October.

Prediction: One or more newspaper bloggers or commentators will cite Tony Abbott’s performance in opposition as evidence that the Coalition are simple wreckers, unsuitable for governance.

Deadline: Close of business Tuesday 5 October.

      That’s called ‘retrodiction’, Eric.

Sorry Adam, I’m not Tim Blair, but that’s very flattering, thanks. I wish I had half of Blair’s writing talent.

He has writing talent? I would be horrified to be compared to him, or to any other shock jock.

It is amazing that Julia and the remainder of her Government seem to be lining Tony Abbott up as the sole reason for any failures that may occur in this coming Parliament. ‘Tony the wrecker’etc etc. Even Godzilla could not lay claim to being as singularly dangerous as Tony appears to be.
If I was Tony I would be flattered with the epithets rather than concerned.
I always remember the words of a WWII aviator who stated ‘you know you are over your target when you start taking flak!’  It is quite an apt phrase for what is happening now.
The Gillard Government obviously enjoys playing the person not the ball.

No doubt the Government tonight will be celebrating with their Champagne - no Sweet Sherry - having pulled a fast one on the Opposition with Peter Slipper.  Presumably now the next step is to get agreement that the PM will be paired to allow her to be absent from Parliament as she must be from time to time.  Will Tony Abbott agree and pair Julia Gillard with Peter Slipper?

In a minute, Tony Abbott will have to think on his feet, he’ll be operating without a ‘script’ in parliament.  I wonder how long it will take for him to shoot himself in the foot?

I noticed Pete Slipper looking very uncomfortable.  I’ll bet the heavies have a few words in his shell pink! I don’t know what they said to Alex Somlyay, but he looked as though his backside had been kicked.

Observe one critical difference between Gillard’s broken promise (no carbon tax) and that of Abbott (speaker deal), which has attracted far more criticism from the media.

Abbott’s promise was to Labor and Independents, not to voters, and was broken before there were any consequences. Gillard’s promise was to voters, and was broken the instant they’d been tricked into voting for her.

So how does Gillard excuse that?  How would the electorate excuse that?
