Let’s start a record collection for the Prime Minister
Acting funny, I don’t know why / ‘Scuse me, while I ask why the hell Kevin Rudd doesn’t know who Jimi Hendrix is.
Is this one of those momentary memory lapses, a mis-statement, a quote taken out of context? In his Courier Mail political column today, Punch music writer Dennis Atkins recalls a conversation from some time ago with the then Prime Minister-to-be:
During some music banter, the cultural icon and guitar-playing [Jimi] Hendrix was mentioned, which drew a complete blank from a 33-year-old Rudd: “Who’s he?”
Now it’s one thing, as has happened to many politicians, to get caught not knowing the current Reserve Bank interest rate or the price of a litre of milk. That shows you might be out of touch with daily life.
But not to know Jimi Hendrix? I’d suggest that shows you haven’t got a life in the first place.
Rudd was born in 1957, which would put him in his early teens - the exact point at which human beings start to pay real attention to music - when Hendrix played Woodstock. And the guy DIED the following year. Perhaps the PM was too absorbed in his studies at the time to notice either.
Of course you don’t need to be familiar with Hendrix’s signature E7#9 chord or lyrics to The Wind Cries Mary to run a country. Life-long politicians sacrifice a lot in the pursuit and maintenance of their careers and missing out on the odd generation-defining moment or album here and there
But I think most people would like to hear a scratchy old vinyl cut of Are You Experienced blaring out the windows of Kirribilli House or The Lodge some evening. The title alone makes it a good start for a Prime Ministerial record collection.
What other albums or singles should Kevin Rudd have in his collection? Add your suggestions in the comments.
