Labor’s NSW degenerates ready to embarrass Rudd
The least functional and least popular division of the Australian Labor Party is about to tell Kevin Rudd to get stuffed, Julia Gillard to butt out, and embark on a wild spree to install some of the most disliked people in Australia back in a position of power.
Less than one month after Premier Nathan Rees blindsided the factions by declaring that he alone would determine the composition of Cabinet - and using his new presidential-style powers to dump the spectacularly unpopular Joe Tripodi and the disloyal Ian Macdonald from Cabinet - the factions have now regrouped and are moving to roll Rees.
This is a big story in NSW but it’s a bigger story nationally as it involves a very pointed snub to the Prime Minister. When Nathan Rees moved against the factions last month, he did so with the backing of Kevin Rudd. And Julia Gillard even went so far as to attend the NSW Labor conference and deliver a speech in support of Nathan Rees.
With the federal Liberal Party rallying behind new leader Tony Abbott, and trying to capitalise on voter anxiety about the ETS, the last thing federal Labor needs is left-field embarrassment and distractions from the largest state in Australia and the longest-serving State Labor government.
It’s a matter of some amazement that the people in the NSW Labor Government - you can catch up with their antics here - are even prepared to leave the house and admit to their line of work, let alone plot coups that are predicated on snubbing the Prime Minister.
It’s last days of Rome stuff in NSW, where this bankrupt, clapped-out government is acting very much like the arse-end of the once credible team which won in 1995, as the formerly mighty NSW Right tosses up between Frank Sartor, Kristina Keneally and Michael Daley for the premiership.
No-one in NSW will care much either way. But Kevin Rudd might, having just backed the bloke who is about to get shafted in Nathan Rees, and replaced by whichever glad-handing opportunist has sucked up to the factions sufficiently to roll him.
