I’m sorry to say this, but did anyone hear about Kyle’s side of the story? I admit that I’m not a big fan of him but think about this: if you were in Kyle’s shoes, what would you do?
Yes, he may have chosen the wrong words, however, he was in a state of shock.
Moreover, I must add that Kyle and Jackie O had absolutely no idea about the situation so if there are hate…don’t aim it at them. Also, remember to wrap your minds around the fact that this was the mother’s idea. Wasn’t she the one who get to ask the questions? Wasn’t she the one who asked her own daughter - her flesh and blood - that disturbing question?
And the giggling at the start, well, I believe that it was just pure excitement. They are only humans after all.
The only things that is related to Kyle and Jackie O is that the lie detector is theirs and that is their show. Nothing more.

Clearly from the audio,  the mother already knew of the rape before this interview, and yet she brings up a sensitive issue. Kyle and Jacky O had no idea of what was to happen. And when it did happen, Kyle merely tried to change the path of the conversation.

This whole situation makes me sick. Who in their right minds would find content like this amusing? I suppose people shouldn’t be surprised though, considering Jerry Springer and co are watched daily.

Lie detectors don’t even work anyway. Numerous studies have been done and yet they’re still used by law enforcement, corporate companies etc.The machines measure various physiological changes, including blood pressure and heart rate, to determine when subjects are getting anxious, based on the idea that deception involves an element of anxiety. But because an emotion such as anxiety can be triggered by many factors other than lying, experts worry that the tests can overlook smooth-talking liars while pointing a finger at innocent people who just happen to be rattled.

It’s society. Sex should only be for married people. By “married” I mean two people who have committed to stay with each other until death and then carry that commitment through. Society goes against that and now we have this shit-storm here as a result and we havn’t even scratched the surface. As much as I already disliked him, I gave him the benefit of the doubt in concern with the rape scandal, I listened to the interview and he did sound sincerely confused so I assumed his response was simply all he could come up with out of shock, but since hearing what he said about Ms. Szubanski and the absolutely despicable reference to concentration camps combined confirmed the fact that he should not even be granted the freedom to live in this country.
By his statements it’s appallingly clear that all he aims for is notoriety by causing what he thinks to be harmless controversy, which to every sane person listening is just blatant disregard for anyone but himself.
Absolutely vile man. There is nothing humorous about what he said, and you must be out of your mind to even attempt to justify what Sandilands said.

The fact of the matter is the mother is an idiot and if it was possible to not cause any distress, she should be banned from motherhood. But Kyle is obsessed with sex. Everything comes down to sex with him. Obviously he has some issues there. I must admit that I have been a listener of the Kyle and Jackie O show on the occasions when I drive to work in the mornings and at times have been entertained by some of their segments. But I strongly agree that it was in extremely bad taste and poor judgment by all parties at 2Day FM and the mother to go ahead, regardless of the rape statement made by the 14 year old girl. Though understandably its their job to get the morning ratings, but certainly there are ethical boundaries as to how this is approached and it most definitely should not be at the price of others misfortunes, heartaches and tragedies. And yes even though everyday we are constantly bombarded in the media by misfortunes and tragedies, it gets to me when people get to exploit these situations as being funny and amusing for the sake of entertainment and ratings. I’m afraid that both Kyle and Jackie O’s drive for the bucks has clouded their judgment on what is simply right and wrong.

This also goes in general on how the duo have treated people on the show in the past. On many occasions I’ve heard Kyle slagging off other people because of in-differences of opinions. There is nothing wrong in voicing your opinion (everyone has that right) but don’t be disrespectful, rude and arrogant to others when doing so, there are ways in doing this besides putting on the tough guy cape ( that’s why Kyle has rubbed so many the wrong way).

As for Jackie even though she is not as blunt and cut throat as Kyle, unfortunately she has gone for the ride and has played into the good cop bad cop role. Either way she is just a responsible as Kyle. To be honest I’ve had enough listening their bad radio antics and stunts and I would not miss the show if its axed. Might be best to put on a bunch of my favorite CD’s in the mornings on the way to work. What ever the decision, I hope that they have learned from this experience and taken responsibility. Unfortunately for them sometimes the only way to bring them back down to earth is to hit them in the hip pocket where it hurts..  both for the individuals and company, maybe then they will think twice next time.

It seems that every negative judgment of Kyle is made by opinions already formed about the 2Day FM Radio announcer. I never liked Kyle either, however I have been feeling more sorry for the guy every day. If you don’t like Kyle then fine, but don’t attack him out of bias - he was not the one at fault in this situation. If he is to lose his job, let it be for something he was actually at fault for. Stop attacking him for something that was not his fault just because YOU don’t like him. Just remember - there is someone out there that doesn’t like you either. Should you lose your job for asking a silly question at work because they don’t like you?

Yes it was on the radio and it was in regard to the rape of a 14 year old girl - but don’t forget it was the mother that asked the questions and interrogated her own daughter - Kyle was just in shock at what he heard and was not sure of how to respond. I think he wanted to try and deter it away from what had happened and just - without thinking - asked a stupid question. It happens.

I once asked someone - at their own brothers funeral, “Hi, how are you?” then responded before he did saying, “oh, stupid question.” To me that was a stupid thing to say to someone at their brother’s funeral - but it was because I was nervous and did not know what to say or do.

People need to be a little more rational and logical about this. No one is perfect. Just leave Kyle alone.

How different is the Kyle and jackie O show to ACA and TT?

Having a crack at societies misfortunes is what us ‘voyeurs’ crave daily….and a ratings winner!  This is no different to Alan Jones, Ray Hadlee, Steve Price ranting & raving at the expense of others so THEY can attract outrageous salaries and bonuses.

It’s only when a taboo subject is involved that anything with a brand runs for cover and looks for scapegoats.

Australian media has always had insecurities with individuals who generate more interest than them from breaking the ‘norms’ and reap the benefits.  So when an opportunity arises, they’ll go extreme lengths to eliminate a threat.

The show didn’t ruin the 14yo’s life - sadly she’s a product of her environment.

Perhaps that is where the focus should be.
I for one will boycott Channel 10, Fremantle media shows and Optus products for taking such a cowardly stance.  They have benefited from the Kyle & Jackie O show right up to this incident.  And cashed in!  Only when there’s an outcry that they will try deceive the public into thinking they have morals.

I hope that Kyle and Jackie pull through this even bigger and even stronger!

What you forget in this country is that a “minor” cannot act of their own volition. It follows that if a 14 year old girl registered for, was accepted, and went on air, the radio station would have questions to answer.

The next point to that is that a “minor” has permissions granted through a consenting guardian. 

Let’s hypothesize for just a moment - because that’s all we can do when we do NOT know all the facts - a 14 year old girls says to her mum, “i want to go on the lie detector segment” ...for whatever reason.  The mum says “sure, no worries, i register you and give the station permission to hook you up “

so the radio station presents the segment, a minor, with a parent’s permission - LEGAL

then the mother asks a question quite beyond the scope of where the station, and at the very least the presenter, believed it would go .... i ask in that scenario

I think people are completely overreacting! I never expected it to get so out of hand. Kyle didn’t mean to harm anyone. Right after that teenage girl revealed what happened to her there was complete silence..an awkward silence. Obviously Kyle was just dumbstruck and had no idea what to say thus he made the mistake…seriously..I think anyone could have made a similar mistake, especially if you were working on radio for as long as he has.

At the same time, it would be wholly ignorant to say that Kyle and Jackie O (and the producers!) did nothing wrong - it is very clear right from the outset that they were comfortable with delving into the details of a minor’s sex life, which under any circumstance is plain wrong and gross. This is not a ‘cotton wool’ statement, but one that anyone with a grain of decency would attest to. I find it funny that so many pass so much judgment, all declaring they know all the facts ...everything from “Kyle knew…”, “the producers knew ...”, “the mum knew ...”
my question is simple ... how do you know?  you don’t. we can only judge by the comments given by the people concerned, and by listening to the ACTUAL segment.
Further, for such intelligent being that you obviously all are - the classic “Chinese whispers” effect that has occurred with this sensationalized crap, is even evident in your own postings .... some of you have the girl at 14, some at 12 ..which just proves the point - you are quick to judge and make accusation without ensuring you know all the facts.
Do i know the facts - No i dont.  My opinion is that someone should NOT be sacked for something which is not their fault. The only thing that can absolutely be attributed to Kyle by all us “uninformed” is that he asked “is that your only experience”
we do not know, and can only presume the context he asked it ... a blurt to fill awkward silence? a concerned question as to whether it was the only time she was raped? an inadvertent slip by someone caught so off-guard by a revelation from a teenage girl that they did not see coming?

We have a “innocent until proven guilty” system here, and i enjoy living by its jurisdiction ... perhaps those who are quick to throw stones at Kyle merely because they don’t like or appreciate him in what ever capacity, should be fairer to the ideals we love in this country.

The whole sad situation is as much a reflection on our society as it is on those involved.

We allow (albeit passively) the media to invade privacy every time we watch the reality TV, listen to the shock radio or read the tabloid newspapers. These things exist because they rate or sell and it is the average citizen (like us) who are responsible for their existence.

To then bleat and want to lay blame when the very thing we support steps beyond whatever moral boundaries we have left is blatant hypocrisy of the worst kind.

No one can hold their head high in this situation. The mother, the producers, the station management or any of us. That’s the simple truth.

That Channel 10 have now seen fit to jump on the moral outrage bandwagon is another sad example of hypocrisy. Sandilands role on that program was to be the bad boy and his contribution to that role was a part of the success the show has experienced. To now turn that around and say that he doesn’t fit with their family values shows them to be what they really are - worried about their revenue stream and nothing else. I’d be sure that some of the hurtful comments he has made to contestants over his period with the show have caused trauma to those on the receiving end but we (and Channel 10) lapped that up under the guise of entertainment.

Firstly can I just point out that the mother is completely to blame not Kyle or anyone else!!! The mother instigated it by ringing into the show. The media are making it seem as if they “strapped” the girl down and forced her to do it. If anyone forced her it was her own mother. The mother came up with the questions and she asked her the questions. Kyle and Jackie O basically sat there and did nothing. I think Kyle and Jackie did the right thing by ending it straight away and offering the girl counselling which would be on them. The mother was the one that was pushing to continue to the question of if that was the only time. Kyle has apologised and explained that he basically freaked out because he was on the spot and had never dealt with something like that before. I feel really sorry for him!!!

Secondly I think this woman needs to be taken away from her daugher!!! Not a good parent what so ever!!! It’s completely wrong to do this on air let alone at all. If you want to know something because you are worried then you ask just like a normal person. If your daughter is sneaking out then it’s because of how you raised her (to not have trust in you and without morals). Eventually every girl sneaks out and at that point you need to punish her but also sit down and come to some kind of compromise (like letting her out but only if you get to drop her there or if you know the address, who she will be with, and giving her a fair curfew) The mother needs help! She knew her daughter had been raped and still hadn’t gone and got her counselling… why? Shouldn’t it be obvious why your daughter is being a rebel after her telling you about the rape? ARGHHH it makes me sooooo angry when feral people have children… its obvious they cant look after them!! Did you hear the feral accent she had?

Finally! If you don’t like Kyle then don’t listen to his show!!! It’s as simple as that. People are always having cries about shows that can be extreme and it really annoys me!!! If you are a sensitive person then don’t listen to or watch shows that are known for their extreme behaviour!!! There’s a saying - ” people get the politicians they deserve ” , and I think the same can be said about the entertainment media in this country.

When you look at some of the tasteless crap that’s allowed to be aired these days in the name of freedom of speech, (or artistic creativity, whatever…....), it’s hardly something new.
Look at shows like Big Brother, and what about what happened recently with The Chasers, and their tasteless stunt pretending to be granting wishes in a hospital ward for terminally ill children.

The really sad part about it , is that all of these talentless turds would get nowhere in life, without the media outlets hiring them in the first place and giving them Carte Blanche, just to try and win ratings wars.
And more importantly, there wouldn’t be any ratings won, if they didn’t obviously appeal to an audience out there, somewhere.

Im no fan of Kyle and Jackie-O, but I have to say….. He may have come across as callous and heartless, but after hearing the audio, he kind of sounds stunned.  I think he said the wrong thing, but I’m honestly more concerned for the girl.  How awful for her to have suffered like that, had a mother that knew all about it, but still decided to put her on the radio for a segment like that.  I hope that with counselling the young girl will be able to rebuild her self-esteem and get her life back on track.  But guys seriously,  if you don’t like Kyle, more fool you for tuning in.  Just don’t listen to him, and move on.  The last thing that that poor girl needs is everyone talking about her…......

Ahhh what is so hard about this. From the outset, the very first comment from the girl was “This is not fair” and that she was not happy or comfortable AT ALL with what was happening. It should NOT have gone ahead, and for that the Radio Station MUST be held accountable.

What kind of “Mother”  after recently (2 months earlier apparently) finding out that her daughter had been raped, puts her child on national radio and quizes her about sex? What a disgrace. S. What kind of respect does she have for her daughter that she has to FORCE her onto national radio, hook her up to a lie detector and ask her completely private and intimate questions? She has NO respect for her child at all and if she has any other children, they should be taken off her.

I think this was a poorly planned stunt from the beginning. I admit to a preconceived prejudice to Kyle & Jackie O from before this incident. I think their publicity stunts are malicious and callous and they are more concerned with ratings then the damage they are doing to the people involved.

However I agree that the mother is also to be held accountable in this instance. If she went in with advanced knowledge of her daughters’ previous trauma, then she is more to blame than the hosts in this instance. Regardless of the trust issues between herself and her daughter, there are better forums to find out what she wanted to know.

I don’t usually take the time to post comments, but this is an issue I felt so disgusted about that I had to. What I don’t understand is why most of the criticism is levelled at Kyle. Yes he royally stuffed up and showed horrific insensitivity - but what about Jackie O? She’s supposedly the ‘brains’ of the outfit, and would have met with producers to OK the segment before going on air. She is more to blame if you ask me. Front up Jackie and show some guts for once. Saying you didn’t know what was going to happen is the weakest excuse possible, it’s embarrassing to try and stand behind that. You knew a minor was going to be quizzed about very personal things. Surely that was enough. Even if she said she would go on the show, she was been pressured to by her mother (who is a person with power over her). She may have felt like she couldn’t say no without receiving some form of punishment from her mother.

It all raises the question of whether or not a 14 year old girl can give consent for this sort of thing. Even though 2dayfm didn’t force her into the chair it was negligent of them to allow her on in the first place, knowing the types of questions her mum qould be asking. Asking or allowing adult “entertainers” to question an underage girl about her sex life is absive, regardless of whether she has had sex or not. Why would a grown man or woman want to hear about the sexual antics of a child. If the child had answered that she had participated in a sex act with anyone it would still have been illegal, she is not at the age of consent. The fact that she revealed an assault is awful.

Why is Kyle Getting bashed for this?

It’s obvious the Mother is SOLELY to blame. She knew of her Daughter’s rape and still went ahead with the stunt. How callous is SHE?

Her daughter was raped 2 years prior, she only finds out several months ago but she thinks it’s ok to go on a live radio show, hook her Daughter up to a lie detector and ask her personal questions about her sex life. Then admits that there has been no counselling for the child.

I think Kyle and Jackie actually did this child a favour. It’s sad that it had to happen this way but at least she is now getting some help and counselling to deal with this.

The Mother is the one at fault here, not Kyle or Jackie. Kyle’s response was obviously one of pure shock and horror and oh my god where do I go from here. I think after it was revealed that the child had been raped Kyle and Jackie handled it with great dignity and a genuine care for the girl. Something that her Mother is defiantly lacking.

As for the person who said a teen girl calling and discussing her sexual experiences voluntarily, is any different; i would have to disagree. We are raising our children in a society where sex is everywhere to begin with. Teenage girls are still children. They should not be indulged on a radio station where the hosts are not qualified to discuss these sorts of things; and regardless, it shouldn’t be made public either.

However, I seriously question the idea that this child was forced to be hooked up to a lie detector. She probably did consent to it, but didn’t realise what a vindictive, attention seeking woman her mother was.

I hope child services are questioning this woman and her parenting methods.

Kyles reaction to the girls comments were stupid. But I can believe that he was shocked and didn’t know what to say. After that I’m sure they did react in the best way they could to a bad turn of events, however that does not justify the initial crime in putting a 14 year old on the radio against her wishes to be interrogated by her mother about personal details in her life.

There is a difference between what happened on this segment and simply discussing teen sex on the radio. If a minor calls the radio station and speaks about their experiences willingly then that is one thing. But that was not the case in this instance. The girl was forced on the show by her mother.

Even if the girl hadn’t have turned out to be a rape victim, there is no way she should have been asked those sorts of questions live on air. She clearly did not want to be on the show and the fact that her mother (who is in a position of power in her life) would make her go on is disgraceful. Furthermore the radio station, Kyle and Jackie O, should never have allowed an underage person to have to endure that line of questioning.

The segment is cruel even among two consenting adults, but in this case it is entirely immoral!

The mother, the station and the hosts had better be held responsible for this.

I am disturbed at the media backlash to this, and the consequences of over-reactive measures to discourage teen sex discourse. An excellent Melbourne Toast article today said:

“In one particularly vile segment, a Channel 7 commentator questioned what they were doing discussing sex with a 14-year-old, and went as far as to say that minors shouldn’t be allowed on the radio. The Sydney Morning Herald journalist in question was last seen skipping down the road, eyes closed, with her fingers in her ears shouting “If I can’t see it, it doesn’t happen” at the top of her voice.”

Quite. The incident was shocking and regrettable, but suggesting in any way that this is end of teen sex discussion in the media is insane.

I work in radio and I can tell you right now that they are responsible for everything that goes to air.  In organising a promotion like this the questions the Mother was asking the Daughter would have been checked, and if they weren’t then someone wasn’t doing their job.  Things like this are always supposed to be checked to make sure the segment doesn’t backfire.  If that question was allowed through it is a disgrace.  This station should NEVER have allowed a 14 year old to be questioned about her sex life.  This question was never going to lead to anything but humiliation for this girl.  The Mother is thoughtless and heartless and the station has been completely irresponsible.

Apparently 2Day FM doesn’t have a dump button, which is almost unheard of.  Almost all stations have a 7 second delay so that swearing and disturbing content can be dumped if necessary.  The need for this is blatantly obvious in this instance.  They should have dumped the segment from the moment the question was asked.  I hope they learn from this.

I HAVE heard the whole thing.  Multiple times, without editing.  I have access to all airplay on all stations and looked it up and listened to it myself repeatedly.  Kyle’s response was awful.  He may not be the PM but he should be socially responsible and is not above community standards.  He is also subject to broadcasting laws.  You don’t know what the intention behind his statement was but “simply redirecting the question” is not a good enough excuse.  He should have jumped in and stopped it right there not tried to keep it going and displaying a complete lack of heart or sympathy.  That is part of his responsibility as a Radio Personality.

Lastly, Mondo Rock, your evaluation of the Mothers’ questions and the girl’s response disgusts me.

Yes, the mother needs to have her head read. But the question needs to be asked - what were the producers of the show thinking?

Kyle, Mr “I-had-a-rough-childhood” has clearly never suffered trauma and doesn’t know a great deal about abuse. Otherwise he would never had said ‘oh was that your only sexual experience’. Its appalling. But ANYONE with an ounce of sensitivity would never had said that either.

What a storm this incident has created.  This reminds me of the prank call from Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross to Andrew Sachs regarding certain activities Brand did with Sachs 17yo daughter.  This was in very bad taste and they both got thrown off the air for this stunt.

I listened to it, and there are no excuses. It was over the boundary line even before the girl said that she had been raped. She is underage and should not have been asked questions about her sex life on air. Her mother posed the questions, but they knew she was going to do so. And the mother must have radiated “weird”. I imagine that the girl signed a consent form before the show, but given her age and given that her mother seemed to be intent on bullying her into answering, any consent she may (or may not) have given is hardly enough. Yes, they killed the segment soon after (not soon enough, in Kyle’s case) the girl said the word “rape”, but by that stage anyone could recognise a that it was a huge, career-threatening car-crash of a segment. “I’m sorry, let me get you a counsellor” - well, duh. That is like offering a bandaide after chopping off someone’s hand.

If you listen to the tape after Kyle makes his blunder he doesn’t say anything else. There is no doubt the man is floundering. Jackie did well to pull it back into line.

But the mother, now she is a case of poor parenting. She drags her daughter to a nation wide studio, knowing full well that the girl has been raped. She has known about it for a few months she says. What kind of mother is she? She ONLY wanted to know if the girl had had sex with someone else!!! She didn’t get her daughter counselling, she didn’t do anything to help the girl cope, instead she drags her off to a radio studio to humiliate her - and she wonders why the girl is off the rails. If anything, the program did the girl a good turn, they are now going to get counselling, but what’s the bet that the mother doesn’t follow through and make sure the girl attends counselling sessions, it will all be to hard for her to bother with.

This girl is a minor. She shouldn’t have been asked this question on live radio in the first place whether the mother wanted to or not. They should have screened the questions and cut the segment if it strayed from those questions. And it isn’t the first time Kyle has been involved in a school age girl with a sexual issue as per the 01 incident. His signature is basically to do anything that the general population wouldn’t agree with. As a broadcaster Kyle has to be careful with what he says as it isn’t only a bad reflection on himself but also on the station and its’ advertisers. It’s not just what he said here that is the issue but the whole format of the program enciting this type of behaviour in the first place. People are fragile you can’t play with their lives for the entertainment of others without something like this happening.

This is an issue of ethics. The radio station has a responsibility towards the community to ensure that what they put on the air does not indanger the lives of others or cause emotional damage. Where are these station managers when Kyle and Jackie O have been running competitions like this for a while now that exist only to use other peoples personal problems to gain ratings?

Kyle and Jackie O both need to have a hard look in the mirror as does the mother of this girl but how about we get to the core of issue and focus back on ethics in broadcasting.

Frankly no one has enough information about this whole situation to make such harsh calls about the mother!  She may be struggling at home and whilst using the media as a “tool” in raising kids might seem silly…she may be desperate.  So leave the mother alone!

Karl should not be sacked! When I read the sensationalised headlines reported in the press today I thought he should, until listening to the piece at which Karl reacts in a way where he seems to be taken by surprise…..give the dude a break! 

Jackie was sensational at rescuing the situation but perhaps the station producers need to prepare their guests better and put them through a more rigourous vetting process.

I hope that this turns out to be a positive scenario for everyone

Before listening to the recording, I leaned towards blaming the DJ’s if not the station for agreeing to interrogate a child for her mothers gain.  I’m FAR from a Sandilands fan and I can’t say I agree with them doing the segment (I’ve never listened to them so aren’t sure if this is an unusual segment) but that mother was disgusting!!!  How DARE she!!  She was belittiling her daughter’s experience.  Glad to hear that they are getting help.  From the daughters response its clear she doesn’t feel heard, that is SO damaging for a survivor.

I must admit, this was the first time I have ever listened to these two and what I heard was shameful. As a mother of 5, I cannot believe that this poor girl’s mother would actually proceed to place her daughter in such a position that the child would have no recourse but to openly admit, on air if you don’t mind, the fact that she had been raped and then admit to the fact that she (the mother) had known about this for a couple of months and had failed to get this young girl proper mental and physical attention that she obviously needs. No wonder why she’s playing up. While I have never heard Kyle’s show on the radio, therefore I will make no judgement of him personally, I do think that his choice of response could have been a little more tactful than what he said, but then again, he had no knowledge that this answer was coming. So mouth engages before brain = dumb repsonse. I do however believe that the radio staion itself should take on some humility, apart from getting the girl counselling. The producers surely would filter what happens in the segments and one of them must have known that the mother wanted to do this. Apart from degrading, this reeks of half assed monitoring. In Kyles defence it was obviously a very surprising and shocking thing that he heard and having listened to it live when it happen it seemed as though he really just didn’t know what to say or do and as horribly wrong as his reaction was it is incredibly wrong of us to sit and judge having not been in that situation. In my opinion it should be the mother who is condemned for asking her 14 year old child…that’s what she is, a CHILD, live on air if she has had sex knowing full well what she had been through.
Blame the mother not Kyle for putting her own daughter through this ordeal. Kyle was no doubt wrong in what he said but i very much doubt he meant it in the context everyone seems to have taken it. I agree with the last comment that this is tasteless and exploitative ‘entertainment’.  The mother is an a-hole. However, Jackie’s response was reasonable in the circumstances and Kyle also apologised. Kyle’s initial reaction was inappropriate but may have been one of shock.  They should be criticised for running this sort of thing with a 14 year old in the first place, not for their responses - it is clear from the introduction that the question of the girl’s sexual experience was going to be brought up. It is a crime for a 14 year old female child to have sex (on the male’s part) so why would you think it acceptable to question her about it on radio? It is potentially deeply disturbing to the CHILD. I don’t even think he was really asking the question - but just saying something to stop the dead air alarms from going off while you could hear them trying to figure out what to do. They did the right thing and shut it down (and clearly it was live live, not in delay live).

It was not asked “...in front of her mother” as this article says, but BY her mother, who knew about the rape allegations! If she wants to trivialise her daughter’s alleged rape by focusing on a seemingly mild rebellion, that is all on her!

Yes, Kyle said the wrong thing, but by the sounds of this, he was trying (and failing) to do a quick recovery on live radio. I’m sure it would have been hard to know what to say in that awkward moment!  Jackie O then did a much better job of it by stopping the interview, and offering the girl and her mother counselling. Kyle also offered counselling and they both apologised, saying they never would have proceeded with the interview had they known about the rape.

This is all on the mother - shame on her! She sounded bloody stupid anyway.

If you listen to the segment it sounds like the girl is trying to dodge a bullet. She doesn’t want to do the test in the first place so she blurts out about the rape to end it. I’m sure since the lie detector guy was there he could have confirmed whether she was telling the truth as soon as they got off the air and if she was then the mother should never have put her daughter in that situation in the first place because she knew!! She should defintitely be the one held to task here. Perhaps a parenting class is in order for her? As for Jackie & Kyle, they should both be reprimanded. And the tool who thought this segment was a good idea. As much as I dislike the guy, he’s not done anything here that is offensive.  They were unaware of this issue prior to going on air, and at the mother’s request they asked the question.  To his credit, Kyle along with Jackie O have offered to use their positions to get this family conselling and admitted that had they known this, they would not have gone ahead with the segment.  They also mention to the mother that this was an issue they should have been made aware of prior to airing, to which the mother agreed.

I tuned into the fox the other week to listen to some light hearted music and instead I walked into a young girl confronting her mother on national radio about having a drinking problem. I’ve tuned a couple of times before and have heard some very questionable broadcasts.  I understand that Kyle and Jackie wanting to bring certain issues to public attention but broadcasting people’s personal issues on national radio is terrible. I turned it off immediately. I haven’t tuned back into the fox since then. It should not be on the radio, or at least at a later time slot. They’ve gone to far this time. I am disgusted in the complete lack of factual and unbiased reporting on this story. The hosts (Kyle and Jackie) were presented with a mother wanting to know if her child had done drugs or had sex, and she KNEW that her daughter had alleged she was raped at 12 years old, and had known of it for several months. Yet she chose not to disclose that to Kyle and Jackie and instead pressed the issue of sex in a live, on-air forum. This woman obviously only cares about controlling her daughter, and dismisses her rape allegation as either untrue, or irrelevant, both of which are horrible despicable acts. The usual media beat-up was always going to happen over this event, only as it was Kyle, an underage girl, and the topic of sex and rape. He was very obviously stunned and lost for words and chose to try to keep the conversation going, but unfortunately chose the wrong words to ask. Big thanks to Jackie for wrapping it up quickly, she showed a wonderful level of compassion and concern, more so than this “mother” who ignored revelations of alleged rape, and pushed her child into a public setting to probe her on suspected sexual activity. This mother knew for a few (3 or more) months and had still yet to offer counselling until the hosts offered it.

Absolutely despicable actions by the mother, poor choice of words by Kyle…and I sincerely hope this girl manages to get through the rest of her life without serious mental trauma from this.

For an adult male to ask a 12 year old about her sex-life is just wrong. Nobody can defend this in any way. If it was in any other situation the male adult would be considered a type of pervert, or even worse a pedophile. For the radio station to continue to employ Kyle is also wrong. I hope the sponsors of his radio show realise what type of person they are supporting. I also think the mother is to blame, but Kyle and Jackie should have used their common sense that you don’t take a 12 year girl and put her in this situation.

I’ve listened to it all and I think Kyle responded like any male would in that situation and Jacko O responded well.  I imagine it would have been the most awkward moment.  I can’t stand Kyle, he makes my skin creep but I don’t see how he did anything wrong here, you can tell he was shocked and had no iea what to say…yes, his words were chosen badly though. Kyle and Jackie O did nothing wrong.  They were only helping out the Mum who wanted to know if her daughter was having sex.  Kyle said what he said then realised what the daughter had said - it was a little too late to take it back.  The Mum should be kicked up the jacksee cause she knew a month earlier but didn’t do anything about it and didn’t tell the production team before the segment, which probably would never have taken place.  Kyle and Jackie O then apologised, offered to foot the bill on counselling and cut the segment - very professional.  They looked after the interests of the girl and her mother and hoped that the counselling would help mend what had been broken between them.  As for Kyle losing his job - why?  He did nothing wrong and did as much good as he could in the circumstances.

I have been scanning the online newspapers since this morning when I actually heard the segment on the Kyle and Jackie O show, knowing full well the media would sensationalise it and point the finger at the hosts.

I think everyone involved (excluding the mother) was surprised at what the girls said. Kyle is an interviewer and responded with his natural reaction of delving deeper. I believe this was an off the cuff comment without letting what the girl had just said sink in yet.

Jackie took the appropriate action of dropping the segment, and listening to her voice she was obviously shaken by what had happened.

Think of it this way, if the girl hadn’t said anything the mother would have continued to ignore it and possibly believe the girl was lying. Now that the whole of Sydney knows, she is going to receive the best possible care and support she can, at the cost of the radio station.

I heard this piece live this morning and I think the responsibility lies with the mother.  She knew of the assault and asked a question with no thought beyond her immediate need for an answer to recent concerns - completely irresponsible and thoughtless, all for 90 seconds of fame.  Most disappointing, the young girl had not had councelling since the assault despite the mother’s knowledge of the event.  A disgrace.
The silence after the young girl disclosed the assault was long and no doubt panic set in for Karl (although a seasoned jock) while attempting to fill it - not the wisest choice of recovery but the longer the silence the more uncomfortable for everyone.  Perhaps the real issue is the canvassing and research done prior to putting these stunts to air.

The whole episode was not suitable for live radio or any other form of entertainment.  If the mother wanted to know about her daughter’s sexual activity she and her daughter should have gone to a counsellor and discussed the matter IN PRIVATE.  The radio station should have seriously checked these two out BEFORE going live.  My heart goes out to the young girl and what this treatment of her will do for the relationship with her mother. The mother is almost entirely at fault here.  She brought a 14 year old girl, who had told her about the rape, into a (nationally broadcast?) radio show and let her be questioned on a lie detector about her sexual activity.  The mother is a moron, an idiot, a bad parent and basically just a dick.
The only thing Kyle did wrong was not IMMEDIATELY stop the interview.  He asked one more question, which the mother then backed up.  I think Jackie O then did a pretty good job of wrapping the interview up sensibly.

I can tell that by the majority of the comments here, no one has actually LISTENED to the audio clip. This girl’s mother BROUGHT her on the radio KNOWING that she had been raped and cornered her about having sex. She cornered her and tried to make her say whether that was the only time she had sex or not. To anyone who listened to the segment you’ll realise it wasn’t Kyle’s intent to belittle or embarrass this girl.  Yes, he was clarifying something that probably should have left alone but there was a very very long pause after the girl revealed she had been raped and I think he just said the first thing that came into his head.  I suspect he was trying to say something, anything.  Jackie then stepped in I think handled it very well.  I think the criticism here should be levelled at the mother - she should have told the radio station about the allegations first and she would have ultimately given permission for her daughter to be hooked up to the lie detector.  Hopefully this girl will get the support she needs from counsellors paid for by 2DayFM as she’s obviously not getting it from her mother.

It seems to me that Kyle definately chose his words wrong, but he was just trying to clarify the question for the purposes of the lie detector. I’m not a big fan of him, but I think for him to be fired over this would mean that his comment would have to be taken out of context. Re-think your word choices Kyle.

Sorry Veronica - it was both a violent event AND a sexual experience. Just because it’s one that doesn’t mean it can’t be the other.

Kyle’s not PM - he’s not even well liked by most Australians - he has no obligation to live up to the ridiculous standards set by our professional finger waggers.

If you actually listen to the interview you will see that Kyle’s question was at the request of the girl’s mother, who was using the program to try to find out whether the young girl is currently sexually active.  The girl dodged the question by raising the rape allegation (which the mother was already aware of, and by the sounds of it doesn’t believe) and so Kyle pressed her to answer it. 

There’s nothing wrong with what Kyle did.  Everyone needs to get a grip.
