Well he did secure press coverage saying things like “centre of world gravity just moved closer to Australia” and headlines such as Triumphant Rudd leaves as Obama battles on, so it’s no surprise the Prime Minister is looking like he’s just been told Christmas is coming twice this year.

Santa Claus is bringing you a diplomatic coup, Kevin

This set of photos were taken by News Ltd’s Kym Smith at the “family photo” gathering after the Pittsburgh G20 summit, which you can read more about here, here and here.

But have a look at the rest of the pics after the jump - in every one, Kevin Rudd has a grin that looks like it was painted on with a roller brush. Enter your captions and explanations in the comments.

Is it painted on? Rudd smiles while walking

Perhaps he has rubber bands in his mouth

I'll just button my jacket with an outrageous grin

We get it Kevin, you have been practicing in the mirror, well done. All the people around him are smirking and look like they are laughing at him, was he making a joke or something? We all know as soon as he makes a joke, he is always the one who finds it most funny and the last to stop laughing.

Rudd’s love affair with the G20 really highlights, for me at least, that he’s the bizarro world John Howard.

You have this international consensus pre-911 that the United Nations, though critically flawed, is the only way to get the world’s Governments mobile on important issues concerning social welfare and security. John Howard trends away from the UN toward a bilateral relationship with United States, who were about to get into a messy, protracted war, to grant the nation relevancy.

Then, you have a renewed international consensus that the way forward is through multilateral ties with emergant powerhouse economies like China and India, and that the traditional Western alliance structures, which keep Australia out of the Pacific, where we need most to be are faltering in the face of the Global Financial Crisis. So Kevin Rudd trends toward the G20, who are about to get themselves into a messy, protracted battle with their own regulatory systems to avoid recessions.

Just as Howard was Americo-centric in his positioning of Australia on the world stage, Rudd’s G20 push risks making us Euro-centric. It’s the European Union and the EU’s biggest economies that dominate the G20, especially since Germany and Turkey are basically double dipping their representation by having the fixed 20th member as the EU itself.

That leaves Australia and Indonesia as the only voices for this region. And Indonesia hasn’t exactly shown a disposition toward thinking of any one other than itself.

Is this just sour grapes over us being a perrenial ‘mightabeen’ on the UN Security Council? Or does Rudd really beleive this is where Australia should be heading?

Nauseating negativity is astounding. It is a photo opportunity for world leaders… it is sounding like a few morbid lot here think the PM should be leaking tears or something…? Get a grip… How many others in the photo’s are smiling… or would readers happen to want their PM to represent Australians in general as narking old men and women?

John Howard’s great world leading achievement being to lap dance for Bush and be a WMD legend with the US… So would we rather be seen as warm mongers or coordinating economic reformists?
Anglo-Centric, Euro-Centric or Cino-Centric… that’s way better than glassing the middle east with the US…

      Zeta,
I admit that a number or words used by yourself, have no meaning for me. I
also could not find them in my old dictionary!
However, I think I have the theme of your post.

Howard lacked in my view any international view point, at best he was a sycophant to the American dream.

Rudd, on the other hand has a strong international/world ambition, in a global economy I feel Rudd is on the right path. The G20 give the two biggest players, China and India a voice and they both deserve one. While it hurts my Anglo-Saxon roots, Britain and America are spent forces. The playing field is leveling out western dominance is dying.

Like him or hate him, Rudd is going in the right direction for the betterment
      od Australia.

    • Zeta says:

@ Rob: The G20 participants aren’t the top 20 leaders, they’re actually the Group of Twenty Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors, which is a mouthful, so they call it the G20, but if they were to be mathematically accurate, it should be G40, since theoretically, that’s how many participants there might be, supposing each country has both a Finance Minister and a Central Bank Governor. When they meet at the Heads-Of-Government level, (which I’m annoyed isn’t called G20: HOG), chuckle heads like Rudd get to go. But the rest of the time, participants include both Finance Minister and Central Bank Governors.

In that photo, you can also see the Governor of the European Central Bank, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, the Chairman of the IMFC, the President of the World Bank and the Chairman of the Development Committee of the IMF and the World bank.

You have a whole Dan Brown novel right there.

Photo number one, his smile is fake as he has eaten too much, his guts is bloated and he has had to undo his jacket revealing his silly red tie being forced out through the gap.

Photo # 2 this is a genuine smile as he is releasing the pressure and reducing his discompfort.  The guys in front of him don’t realise the gastronomical problems he is facing although the guys behind him don’t look too pleased.

Photo # 3 That’s a grimmace, he now realises he “has to go” things are getting a bit squelchy down there.

Photo #4 That’s a real satified smile.  Dangers over bloatings gone down, and he can now re-button his jacket.

Zeta… I agree entirely with your analysis. My thinking is that Rudd does actually believe he is doing the ‘right thing’ in every respect, regarding the National interest. He is also extremely proactive in pursuing all things in the best interest of Rudd. I agree Australia’s best course is to be the voice of reason, and leader by example, in Asia-Pacific. In many cases what is best for our closest neighbours, can also be good for us. Thinking globally, whilst discounting regional necessities, may leave us without a seat anywhere when the music stops.

Arent we all a cynical lot.  I am a liberal voter, but once the election is run we need to give respect to the Office of Prime Minister.  The US does it very well with President particularly on the international stage - whether Republican or Democrat the office demands respect.  Good on you Kev.  The smile says it all - the Australian people have survived the storm and prospered.  How would the French, Italians and British feel if they saw their respective representatives smiling when it is so hard for them right now.  Good on you Ruddy - keep on smiling!

If the smile is a fake, what does that tell us about this PM?  With PM’s such as Bob Hawke, Paul Keating and John Howard, what you saw is what you got whether you liked them or not. However with this PM there is a bit of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde about him. The plane and the “F” word incidents made me stop and think that the butter won’t melt in his mouth portrayal of this PM via his minders and the media isn’t a consistent reflection of who he really is.  I suspect that’s why people have made not so nice comments regarding these photos. The hubris he carries locally and on the international stage is not Australian and will eventually bring him undone once the Australian people see thru the facade.
