Hipsters with hip replacements
Someone once told me that when people reach a certain age they begin dressing in the manner they did at the happiest time in their life.
The same often goes for elderly people with severe dementia, who can keenly recall the minute details of life when they were happiest. My 80 year old grandmother did not recognise me at all in the last six months of her life, but she would talk about her sons as if they were still young teenagers. She was a homemaker and it was the most joyful time in her life
That’s what I think about when I watch the brilliant video above about hipsters, the future and social media.
It’s actually a promo for Social Media Week “a global iniative that’s designed to explore societies, cultures, and economies are becoming more integrated & empowered through a global network of communication.”
The video is mostly tongue in cheek, and I get that. Although it does go some way to explaining the hipster addiction to skinny jeans. Those pants have got to last them at least another sixty years! But it’s also a fascinating insight into the way language has developed around the internet age. Just five years ago, words like this “community” and “followers” would only really be used in normal conversation about cults.
So is there a time in life where words just stick with you? And does that mean that this “internet” language will stay with us on the big journey of life? Just the other day The Punch was discussing how outdated it seems to use the word “groovy”. And that makes it easier to imagine us sitting around talking about our FB status updates in our eightieth year.
But what do you think? Will you still be wearing the clothes of your salad days in your porridge years. Will you still be using today’s jargon? Or just watch the brilliant video and have a laugh.
