The national moral microscope shifted in the United States last Sunday from an intern-loving late night host to an androgynous American Idol runner-up named Adam Lambert.

Quite a stir.

For those living under a rock – or floating outside the blogosphere and twitterverse for a day or two – here’s what went down.

The American Music Awards ceremony was moving along Sunday night as blandly as expected. Shakira shook her booty for a bit, MJ continued to rewrite the last ten years of his life with some more posthumous honours and Taylor Swift collected a slew of awards, sans interruptions. So far, so meh. Then came the finale.

The now incomparable Adam Lambert, wearing a shimmery silver suit, a slick black flame of hair and enough makeup to frighten a Myer cosmetics worker, gave an S&M-themed performance that drew an estimated 1500 complaints to TV network ABC.

Squealing his debut single, “For Your Entertainment”, Glambert stalked across the stage gripping two male dancers by a leash, pressed a bloke’s face to his crotch for a bit of faux-fellatio, tripped over at one point and ultimately kissed his (male) keyboardist. Apparently, God did make Adam and Steve.

The singer often criticized for playing it safe and not “coming out” while on Idol last year was clearly making a statement: I’m here, I’m queer, I have an album dropping Monday and I need as much publicity as I can get.

The fans heard him loud and clear. Two incarnations of Lambert’s debut disc, “For Your Entertainment”, raced into the iTunes top ten albums chart following the controversy. But the fallout has been huge.

The blogs, tabloids and cable networks are all a flutter over whether the ex-Idol went too far. You’d think the bloke had shaken a couple of babies up on that stage.

Of course, the family groups cried foul. Parents Television Council president Timothy Winters said folks were outraged. “They just can’t believe the nature of the content, the explicit nature, and how much graphic content there was,” he said. Clearly, Winters has never seen our own Axel Whitehead in play.

ABC – happy to flaunt the exploits of slutty Desperate Housewife Edie Britt until they killed her off – bowed to the pressure. The network cut away from the moment of simulated oral sex when the show was broadcast on the west coast and cancelled Lambert’s scheduled appearance on its morning show, Good Morning America.

A spokeswoman for ABC said, “Given his controversial American Music Awards performance, we were concerned about airing a similar concert so early in the morning.”

Lambert told the LA Times: “It’s a shame. Female entertainers have been risqué for years. Honestly, there’s a huge double standard . . . It’s 2009, it’s time to take more risks. It’s about entertainment.

People want to be surprised. It’s too bad that people are so scared.”

Glambert is right to point to the double standard.

Since Madonna started grinding the stage in a wedding dress at the 1984 MTV Music Awards, it’s been pretty much de rigueur for popettes to push the sexual envelope at these shows.

On the same night Glambert gayed it up big time, Shakira and Lady Gaga gave their own none-too-PG performances. Anyone who flicked over to MTV during the performance might have seen any number of girl-on-boy, girl-on-girl, girl-on-team film clips.

True, when Madge joined Britney and Christina in that steamy MTV three-way pash-fest back in 2003 – a tribute to her original MTV bump-and-grind – there was some outrage, but nothing was edited and no future performances were denied.

That’s because Lambert is a gay bloke and gay blokes get a different deal. Just being a gay man is pushing the envelope enough, apparently. No need to actually demonstrate what it means.

The simulated oral sex was questionable, true, but by the time Lambert hit the stage it was past any kid’s reasonable bedtime. It was the parents who were offended.

As for the lip-locking, if societal standards allow for Katy Perry to kiss a girl and like it, Lambert should be allowed to snog whichever keyboardist he wants.

As a gay man, part of me wishes Glambert would tone it down a little. He is right now the most prominent gay bloke in the US and his face-grinding shenanigans do little to dispel negative stereotypes some homophobes hold.

Trying to convince people you’re not an ecstacy-chewing morally bankrupt party boy when Glambert is their image of gay men is no easy task.

And with issues like gay marriage going to the vote at referendums across the country, we need as many people onside as possible. Flamboyance is not our most effective political tool.

But in fighting for equal treatment on marriage we shouldn’t sacrifice it on stage. I may not like what Adam Lambert did, but I defend his right to do it.

I’m a gay male and hate the way there are always flamboyant gays wearing make up or acting like girls out there waving the gay flag for all to see. And all the TV shows depicting gays as girly celebrities and fashion icons or Hollywood reporters. I’ve never been flamboyant, have mainly straight friends and would not be noticed as being gay When I tell people i’m gay they usually say, i wouldn’t have picked you as being gay, or I never realised you were gay.. That sort of stuff annoys me, It’s a shame we don’t see more gay people who aren’t flamboyant who don’t stand out as a being big girls in boys clothes. It does me and other gay guys who aren’t running around flapping our hands in the air and thinking we are special because we are gay. no good. In defence of the guys above if it were 2 girls it would be OK. Well thats my winge for the day. cya

Gay rights cant be picky and choosey

You have got to accept the tacky, loud, fat, old, ugly, trailer park trash gays along with the current stereotypical young fit stylish yuppie gays.

Gone are the days when men were men and women were women and the world was sane and everybody could almost understand what everybody was saying. Gone are the days when music had rythum and you could understand what they were singing about, gone are the days when your children could walk down to the local shop and buy a bottle of milk.. Gone are the local shops. Gone are the days when people who were gay were happy normal people. Gone are the days when people who didn’t believe in homosexuality weren’t homophobic. Gone are the days when if you didn’t agree with what the existing government wants to do you were a sceptic or some other disbelieveing creature who crawled out of the black dirty swamp and mire of being normal.

Why should gay men have to convince “people” of anything?

Perpetuating a stereotype through distancing yourself from it does no one any good, Joel.

I may not be a big fan of his music but what Lambert did was great and I wish more of us were confrontational with our sexuality rather than trying to blend in with the straights. Why shouldn’t people be allowed to be flamboyant?

Playing straight is just boring and not the true path to equality.

Actions like Lambert’s don’t do anyone any good, least of all the gay movement.  Madonna pashing Christina and Britney, other than stirring the loins of many male viewers and titillating any number of female watchers, achieved nothing but perhaps more music sales for the three ladies involved.  Katy Perry obviously realised this and along with her single, very much set out to titillate both the younger male and female audience as well as the older male audience.  You’re perfectly correct to defend his right to put on such a performance but his actions, just like those of the X-rated performers in the Mardi Gras, do nothing to assist the Gay Movement and are instead probably detrimental to it.

Maybe Adam’s version of same-sex TV action isn’t as accepted because he’s gay. Those female versions you use are examples of straight girls kissing each other. This is the approved version because it is perceived they aren’t doing it for themselves or because they like it but to titillate men and cause controversy. If it was a gay woman simulating oral sex and kissing another girl there would probably be just as much of an outcry. It ain’t right but it’s the way it is.

In any case, straight women kissing each other is boring now. I think the pop music man-on-man time has come.

Clive, I know that was unintentionally hilarious but it was funny nonetheless.

This article is spot on and so was Lambert.  Female movie stars pash and no one cares but Brokeback Mountain was much discussed with endless stupid press questions on whether the actors liked it and both claiming they didn’t and only did it for the role.  If our culture requires so much raunch, why should we be threatened and outraged only if it is male on male and why should it matter if they are homosexual or heterosexual? Then again much of the consuming public appears to be male and under 25 so….....

    • AdamC says:

John, I second your point. “Glambert”‘s show had all the stereotypes; it was campy, promiscuous and unnecessarily shocking. These are not positive images. At least with the girl-on-girl antics of the pop-tarts, they are (quite clearly) not lesbians and nobody around the traps think that actual lesbians are anything like Katy Perry!

I am grossly offended by your, and others’, attack on flamboyant gay men. This anti-effeminacy attitude has its roots in sexism and is quite frankly homophobic. There is not a divide between the “good gays” and the “bad gays” and to create one just weakens our community and basically tells the homophobic community that it is ok to target flamboyant gay men.

We need to demonstrate the diversity of the gay community, not try and recreate some heterosexist homogenous one.

Yeah, I think I’d be offended by watching simulated oral sex too. Not because I have a huge problem with gay men, but because I don’t really appreciate watching simulated oral sex by ANYONE, gay or straight.

If he wants to make out with a guy on stage, good for him. If he’s going to simulate oral sex in front of people, then frankly I don’t care whether it’s with a woman or a man - I’m still going to find it offensive.

Speaking of double standards, if Lambert was straight, and rubbed a female dancer’s face in his crotch, that would have been the end of him. Certainly wouldn’t be any blogs defending him for being “daring”.

He can do what he likes in private, but I don’t think a mainstream pop act with a large teen fanbase should be simulating oral sex in a massive public forum. It’s a bad example (to go with all of the other bad examples flooding the mainstream music airwaves). And apart from that, it’s pretty gross, and not something many people really want to see (which is ultimately why ABC canned him).

They look like 2 girls anyway. Make up painted finger nails and looks like a diamond engagement ring. I’m with you John, these sort of guys do no good for other gays who aren’t raving queens! Unfortunately that is all the media want to show when it comes to gay men. Same here i hate it when i tell someone i’m gay and they say you don’t look like you are! They expect you to be a raving queen and acting like a girl.

Oh yes, celesbianism is in, but everyone complains when two blokes snog? Puhlease.  This is no better nor worse that what Lady Gaga or Britney do.  I am happy for him that he has come out, but he’s not the first gay pop star and I’m sure he won’t be the last.

I think the whole sextertainment thing is over the top - not just Lambert, but the fact that it’s on every ad (think Michel’s Patisserie) on every billboard (think Portugese chicken), on radio (think claims of longer, stronger lovin’) on telly, whether it’s the program or the commercials.

THEN, we as a society wonder why our kids have self-image and self-esteem issues, why they want to grow up so fast and why Gen Y treat sex like a game of half court basketball (“you’re up!”).

I’m not a prude and love all my straight, gay and bi friends.  I just think we’re being sexploited and no-one but the multinationals and ad-agencies are benefitting.

Well, get used to more and more of this stuff - It’s what happens as a society goes into decline. I bet all those soldiers who died at Normandy and Kokoda are so proud of what we’ve done with our freedom.

I suppose this is what happens when Christian’s are tricked into voting for Left wing parties.

      @Lexi, i agree.

i don’t give a toss who is involved i’m just tired of having sex shoved in my face every minute of every day. “sex sells” apparently. i recently even read an article about women getting plastic surgery on their nether regions because they didn’t believe that they were “normal”, yet most of these women surveyed couldn’t say what normal was!

i’m not asking for the days of old clive and sexual repression, just a little modesty and privacy…i applaud glambert for pushing the boundaries of equality, i just wish that no one felt like they had to.

Geez Patrick, I didn’t know the Japanese and the Nazis were practising Christians.

The US Army, the Anzacs and the British Army in WW2 were 90% Christian. I’m just saying I don’t think, in their minds, they were fighting so that one day two dudes could dress up like women and get down with each other in front of millions of Christian men, women and children.

      Good day,

    • James says:

      02:26pm | 26/11/09

You do realise, Barb, that a number of those at Kokoda and Normandy were probably gay themselves, don’t you?  Homosexuality was actually fairly common amongst soldiers, much more common than most people realise.

    • AM says:

      02:29pm | 26/11/09

Barb the Nazis actually actively sought to find and kill homosexuals as well.  I am a Chrisitian as well, and have to say that prejudice against homosexuals is very UNCHRISTIAN. Your brand of Christianity is exactly that.-Your brand. You interpret it the way you want to and moralise on issues that you perceive Christianity represents. To me or should I be more to the point, my brand of the Christian religion is not about marginalising homosexuals to the point where they are treated as inferior people.  It is about acceptance and a spiritual guidance to treat everyone equally. I am offended at your use of the Christian faith and the troops to spread your messages of hate!

LOL this is nothing that Placebo didn’t used to do about 10 years ago! Come on idiots, I’m 20 years old and I know this. He’s not the first guy to pash another on stage!

Can the dinosaurs please crawl away and die, along with their hatred of anyone who is different from them? What is wrong with gays who flaunt their gayness? It’s the same as straight guys who flaunt their straightness, which as far as I can see, is every single guy. People really need to stop telling others who they have to be and how they can live their life.

    • Barb says:

      04:08pm | 26/11/09

      Cats,

We’ll “stop telling others who they have to be and how they can live their life” as long as you guys stop telling us what to tolerate and accept.

Either we keep homosexuality in the closet, or Western society undergoes a great schism in which Christians and gays/atheists live under different legal systems. If there’s another outcome you can see - let me know.

Or, Barb, we have one government that says that everyone can be of whatever freaking religion they like. And ultra-christians like yourself can keep their lives how they want and not associate with homosexuals if they wish. But don’t come onto public forums and banter on about how wrong homosexuality is, and then expect people to respect what you saying!

    • Trjn says:

      05:03pm | 26/11/09

Barb, we don’t need to tell you what to tolerate and accept. Jesus already did that for you:

‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ “This is the great and foremost commandment. “And a second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.” ( Matthew 22:37-40)

“But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward in heaven will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men.” ( Luke 6:35)

Also, Christian beliefs are outside of the legal system, acceptance of gays in society doesn’t mean there will be different laws for Christians and non-Christians so I’m not sure how you came up with this idea of a great schism.

    • Dan says:

      07:12pm | 26/11/09

Barb, on another thread you said I should be inclusive. How about you follow your own advice and start being inclusive to people who are non-Christian/gay etc…!

    • Robbo says:

Here you have some gay guy who kisses a few blokes on stage and thrusts his hips for a few minutes. What song did he sing- who knows? This fool just takes away the spotlight from the real stars like Taylor Swift for instance. She’s the sweetest thing to come out of the music industry since forever and she sings innocent and catchy tunes which people of all ages can tap their feet to. Plus she’s absolutely gorgeous.

    • James says:
