Shortbread and crust-less sandwiches are unlikely arsenal but they’re about to be deployed by an army of angry tea drinkers in a little pocket of Great Britain this weekend and they mean business.

Crap weather, nice tea.

Tomorrow afternoon around the tables of a tiny tea shop in Cambridgeshire, little fingers will be raised in solidarity against a recent fluctuation in “coffee bars” that many fear have contributed to “the lost art of drinking tea”.

“We are losing sense of ourselves with coffee bars like Starbucks and Costa Coffee where you slurp coffee through spouts in paper cups or rushed tea in mugs or chunky cups. The whole experience of sitting down with a proper china cup and saucer and having a good natter - which of course it what used to happen - is in danger of being lost,” says Tania Baker, the owner of By Jove! Tea Rooms in Burrell who is hoping to inspire tea drinkers everywhere with her “very proper” protest that involves dressing in period costume and “taking tea”.

But it could be a very lonely little protest; according to the Telegraph British people still drink approximately 165 million cups of tea everyday and thanks to the growth of retro tea rooms, traditional tea drinking is actually “back in fashion”.

At least they won’t go hungry.

I just love the Red Bull sign in the background. Spoils the Edwardian ambience somewhat.

There is generally a different mindset to drinking coffee and tea.

As I walk to work I see a line of cars outside the drive-in esspresso place (formerly a petrol station) with occupants desperate for that morning ‘heart starter’. I just can’t imagine a drive-in tea place taking off.

It’s as if coffee has become something we need and tea is something we want.

And, yeh, what bozo invented those awful paper cups?

Coffee in paper cups stays hotter longer, which is why at trendy euro cafes you get not what you pay for : 6 grams of milk in a thimble, and get you out the door so’s the ‘chef’ (hah), can rattle the cattle for the now-vacant table.
Best coffee is at home : plunger, Vittoria Cafe Blend, and cream.
Otherwise, it’s Starbucks by a mile.

Starbucks is the most horrible invention ever.  Only surpassed in disgusting coffee by those G-d-botherers Gloria Jean’s.

I agree with the homebrewed coffee, however it’s filter (not plunged) coffee all the way for me but full marks for the cream.  Although I’m partial to an espresso or 2

Who invented tea bags? And the quick release chemicals in them?

My wife bought a High Tea set recently for her and my daughters to have ‘tea and conversation’ one day a week after school. They enjoy themselves and it provides a calming time without the usual electronic distractions of TV, DVDs and Nintendos.

Does the set come with batteries included?

I despise tea bags, so I drink coffee during the working week. However, come the weekend, I will brew a proper cup of tea and enjoy it at my leisure. Edwardian costume, however, is optional. Regency, on the other hand…

The UK has nothing to fear - unfortunately even the Costas coffee in the UK is sooooo bad, they converted me to become one of the tea drinkers.

Tea rocks!  And afternoon tea parties with scones, cucumber sandwiches and petits fours kick ass over any other kind.

Goldfinger, one of Ian Fleming’s novels about the fictional James Bond, contained this memorable line:
“I don’t drink tea. I hate it. It’s mud. Moreover, it’s one of the main reasons for the downfall of the British Empire. Be a good girl and make me some coffee.”

T-Bar has high tea sometimes, but I’ve never made the effort to go- the stainless steel benches don’t seem conducive to the philosophy.
Anyone know of a nice place in Adelaide to have a proper pot of tea?
