There’s nothing quite like the British press when they smell blood. When a star’s foibles move from bite-size skitty spreads in the tabloids to full-on denunciations in the broadsheets, it’s only a matter of time before the sackcloth and ashes come out. Gordon Ramsay apologised this morning - through a spokesman - for calling Tracy Grimshaw a pig.

Yesterday he was belligerent, talking about lawyers, and angry at Grimshaw for bringing up his wife when she denounced him on Monday. (That clip on YouTube has become a minor sensation and you can see last night’s follow-up here.) But Ramsay has copped a bucketing over the past 24 hours, with a columnist in London’s Daily Telegraph declaring she’s convinced he “has a death wish” and that he’s “blown it – certainly as far as female fans are concerned”. It ran on the home page of the Daily Mail website - right beside the latest coverage of the political crisis that is threatening to up-end public life in Britain:

Boiling point: Fleet Street's fury forces Ramsay's hand

More highlights from the global coverage below, including video of some of Ramsay’s actual comments on stage in Melbourne. (Winner for most obscure angle of the Ramsay stories around today goes to this post, which somehow manages to link the Ramsay incident to LG and the Cronulla Sharks.)

But where does this leave Ramsay now? Share your verdict in the comments.

About time he apologised - and so he should.

Gordon Ramsay is a name now and that’s all. I can’t actually remember the last dish he cooked without it being either with hapless tv student chefs or in someone elses restaurant where everyone cops a bollocking from this self styled kitchen god. This is the latest instance where power has corrupted and for what end? What an idiot and its a good time for his excesses (like other industry wasters) to be held up for public scrutiny. He’s lost any atom of regard I had for him. There are ecoterrorists and rip off artists in all walks of life and now we have a whinging kitchen terrorist who we would all be a lot better off without. And he can leave Tracey alone, she’s made a long career in the tv world and on a channel that’s notorious for it’s neanderthal attitiude towards it onscreen women, their looks and age so Ramsey’s is hardly going to stop her. Tosser.

Gone too far? I thought he had years ago when I first saw him on TV.

How many times is he going to do this sort of thing then think he can get away with it by simply apologising?

Weve only got ourselves to blame - he should never had the attention he’s had.

I reckon he should take his favourite four letter word add the word ‘off’ and leave us alone for good.

The bloke is an absolute moron and I suggest we do what all morons deserve - ignore him and he’ll go away - good ridance!!

I think its ironic that the presenter of a series known for bullying and shameless victimisation complains about name calling.

Did anyone else get the horrible link from Grimshaw’s horrific speech to an item that glorified and rewarded a racist liar?

I loved the British Kitchen Nightmares show. If you looked past the swearing you could see that Ramsey clearly cared about the people he was trying to help, some of them massively in debt and in almost a hopeless financial situation. Ever since then I’ve been a fan.

But that doesn’t mean he can get away with whatever he likes just because he has no fear in speaking “the truth”. I’m glad he apologised, but it’s a pity he didn’t do it face to face, as it’s exactly the kind of confrontation he likes to dish out to his staff and advice seekers. The amount of times I’ve heard him say “Grow some balls big boy!” Think perhaps you should take your own advice Gordon.

I never thought I’d say this, but good on you Tracey Grimshaw. Gee, what is this, bush week???

Nine salivates over his shows, as they pile up the ratings, mainly due to his foul language and regular berating of contestants or would be restaurateurs. Suddenly these insults are directed at one of their own (who, to be honest, is an awful journalist) and it is treated like he said the worst things possible. Maybe this smells like a promotion opportunity, I wouldn’t be surprised Nine has a new series of Hell’s Kitchen or Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmares ready for release, in not too distant future.

    • Nathan says:

      12:54pm | 10/06/09

So I guess this all means that Nine won’t renew their contract to air Ramsay shows? Doubt it. They love the shock factor. So hypocritical.

the public allowed Gordon to be who he is and became so arrogant and abusive! the way he speak to staff and there are women there too! would he like someone yell at his daughters like that too?? dont think so eh?? He should knwo better as being a cook and being near fire u expect to get burn well now he got too close…i honestly dont think he could be the best cook ever there are many still with the less attitude than this person. By the way i always though by the way he looks that he has had a hard life.

Where IS the dig at Tracey Grimshaw. He’s referring to sitting next to a made up character in the plane with swine flu. Then he says her names starts with T. He could be referring to anyone. Grow up Australia and stop getting conned by biased gutter tabloid journalism. Channel 9 are only after some quick ratings. This is a publicity stunt by ACA.

Plus Tana stuck by him for a reason? Ever thought those two alleged affairs may have been fabricated. Women lie too you know. Chk Chk Boom!

    • Steve says:

      02:09pm | 10/06/09

Two Questions, One, how is Gordon gutless? and Two, how did Grimshaw come out of this as victor as opposed to a person who can’t take her own medicine?  Ramsay did exactly what ACA does on each show, and did to him, apologised and is branded gutless?  What does that make ACA and should we now expect apologies from them re all the people who’s names they’ve smeared over the years?  Mmm I think not.

    • James says:

      02:22pm | 10/06/09

Maybe out PM should be worrying about bigger issues, rather than trying to get his name in the news with polulist commenting about a dispute between a chef and the presenter of Australia’s trashiest news program.  Speaking of which, after kicking up such a stink about being unfairly abused, I assume that ACA and Grimshaw, in an effort to avoid being hypocritical, will be apologising to the 1000’s of people who have been unfairly treated by them in the past.

    • Oscar Zeta says:

      02:25pm | 10/06/09

Grimshaw needs to get out from behind her desk and knock around with some real journalists. They’re paid far less, and work much longer hours, only to be called far worse names by proper lowlifes, who undoubtedly lack the theatrical charm of Gordan Ramsay.

And real journalists don’t get the opportunity to shoot back at their offensive detractors with a pre prepared speech in front of 1.4 million viewers.

    • Marnz says:

I wish he would bugger off back to the UK,. Let them deal with his rubbish and leave those of us with more respect for others and ourselves, alone!

Gordon Brown is very clever.  What a brilliant distraction from his troubles.  He has even managed to find someone with the same name to baffle the bewildered.

This is not important.  Two publicity seekers in ritual conflict.  Woohoo.  Move along please.  Nothing to see here.

    • Chef Bunny says:

      04:25pm | 10/06/09

Looks like Ramsay will need everyone of his 14 Michelin stars to keep his head above water, the one thing you don’t want is the Australian Press in attack mode -  Mr Ramasy where you arrested in a London public toilet 16 years ago? He’d be best cutting his losses in Australia and head home; otherwise the “other” stories will come out…..

    • Greg says:

      08:25pm | 10/06/09

Sure, Gordon Ramsay is just a chef, one who has made a lot of money from the viewing public, to be sure, however, Tracy Grimshaw is tabloid press. She signed up for scum-reporting… can’t take the heat?? Get out of the kitchen.

    • Chade says:

      10:32am | 11/06/09

For someone that was slowly sinking out of the headlines (like his shows’ ratings), he’s (and the broadcaster they’re on) coincidentally found himself on them again.

There’s nothing in that. Or not much. Maybe?
