Rugby league convert Karmichael Hunt kicked this absolutely beauty from outside 50 last night, his first goal in AFL footy. The Twittersphere went into meltdown as the Suns led the unbeaten Cats 62-51 at halftime, before sanity, and the Cats, prevailed.

There’s a good argument that Adam Goodes’ close range goal in the fourth term of the Swans/Kangas match, after Lewis Jetta’s brilliant sideline dash, was a far worthier contender for Goal of the Day. The Swans wouldn’t have snuck a one point win without it either.

There’s an equally good argument that the author of this brief report is a tosser, for having mercilessly bagged both the Suns and their creator-on-high, Lord Demetriou, a few weeks back.

For now, let’s celebrate a good night’s entertainment from Karm and the Suns in their home venue of Emoticon Stadium, or whatever it’s called. By the way, did anyone else think the Cats players were less than warm in their embrace of Gary Ablett after the game?

You can understand that. Because even though Geelong accounted for Collingwood a couple of weeks back, you have to think the Pies would still have the Cats’ measure in a big final, as they did last year. If Ablett was still around though, it might be a different tale.

Any other sporting thoughts this weekend? Share them here. Comment hard and comment often because Tory is hungover and she’s moderating today. Heh heh heh.

It was a great first half from the Suns with some awesome talent showing through, they just didn’t have the legs to keep up with Geelong. Hunt was brilliant last night, he would have shut a lot of people up.

The NRL should be very nervous about how Hunt and Folau perform. I guarantee you if either of them end up being better than average, AFL clubs will be raiding NRL talent left right and center.

Re: paragraph 2 - don’t worry Ant, no one has ever accused you of being consistent. raspberry

I’m glad that GC are showing enough to justify the thought that they could become a powerhouse within 3-4 years once they’re full of 60+ gamers that were all high draft picks. They could’ve just been the second bye this year, but they’ve shown that you under-estimate them at your peril.

Highlight of the weekend for me was Henson Park yesterday. The rain stayed away, the wind wasn’t too bad, & the Jets won! The crowd was the biggest there in 3 or 4 years - they even ran out of KB before half time (so not all good). It wasn’t a great game, but it was a better standard than the Newcastle Parra NRL game @ 5:30pm yesterday. Not sure what that says about the NSW Cup or the NRL.

As for the Swans, take the win & forget about the way you got it.

There are plenty of other “athletes” who join AFL with limited previous experience in the game. The man can run, kick & weave well enough, the footy brain will evolve. Wait till K.Hunt gets enough aerobic ability, he will play on the ball/tag & his tackling will be ferocious…bring on the Rubgby boys

I thought this was the sporting story of the week (well this and the fact that the Mighty blues nearly beat QLD in QLD without help from the refs or their powder puff front rowers).

      http://www.foxsports.com.au/cricket/worcestershire-terminate-contract-of-adrian-shankar-after-it-was-revealed-he-lied-about-his-age-and-cricket-ability/story-e6frf3g3-1226064073256

As someone who played every sport under the sun at an enthusiastically average level I would have loved to have played elite sport. This guy got to play first class cricket just by having a big pair of balls. Of course that’s not likely to help him much in prison.

I’m sure there are lots of examples of frauds playing sport at the highest levels. Even though Thomas Brolin was class footballer by the time he got to the EPL in his late 20s he was fat and lazy. I got to see him play Everton and it was weird to watch a bloke with plenty of skill move around the ground like a tug boat.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomas_Brolin

At least Brolin had been a top class footballer. I was also at the Bulldogs V Knights game where Warren Ryan decided to play an ex-NFL footballer on the wing named Greg Smith. Whilst this bloke was athletic and fast his claims to have played NFL where lies and there’s more to being a footballer, even a winger, than being fast.

Whilst the Knights ran out to a 24 – 4 lead shortly after half time when the Bulldogs finally realised what a complete gumby Smith was what followed was a disaster that even Andrew Johns at his best couldn’t stop.

The doggies peppered the Knights down the right side with bombs and I remember Rod de Silva throwing dummy after dummy to Smith who went for every one of them, even though there was no one outside him.

At one stage the Knights were trying to run the ball out from their own line and I remember saying to the blokes I was with “Oh No!!” when I spotted Smith coming across from a run from dummy half, of course he got smashed by one of the big Canterbury forwards and dropped the ball from which the dogs subsequently scored.

It was a disaster. The Knights lost 28-26 and snatching defeat from the jaws of victory didn’t make the aggro from the dumber of the Bulldog supporters on the train home any more fun.

When Ryan was asked why he didn’t replace Smith he said something like “I didn’t want to ruin his confidence”. Smith never played NRL again and at the time he played Timana Tahu was still in reserve grade waiting to make his debut later that season.

I’m sure there are plenty of other examples of frauds playing elite sport.

John Elias got his start in rugby league by claiming he was Benny Elias’ cousin. He was actually a very good player who probably didn’t quite have the level of commitment needed.

I think there are plenty of stories of footballers who get their start thanks to being (actually) related to someone talented & have gone nowhere. One NSW Cup coach springs to mind….

    • Seano says:

      02:39pm | 29/05/11

lol I didn’t know that about John Elias.

Wasn’t there an EPL footballer who claimed to be the cousin of George Weah. Oh yeah here it is…

Congrats to the Cats for toying with the Suns for a half to keep in the spirit of opening the new stadium. An absolute embarrassing annihilation would have taken the gloss off the occasion. Good sports…Cats.
Hunt kicks his first goal in round 10 of the season and he is a bloody superstar….geez. give me a break!!

    • Mitch says:

      02:07pm | 29/05/11

The funny thing is that while Hunt’s goal will be on the highlight reels in NSW and Qld, his direct opponent (Steve Johnson) kicked a lazy 7.  So long as it gets bums on seats on the GC I guess we can overlook that.

As for after the game I didn’t think the players were cold towards Ablett at all, if anything they were too warm! but that’s just me being the bitter Cats supporter I am.

    • Liam says:

      04:49pm | 29/05/11

If you actually watch the game closely, K was his direct opponent for only 3 of those goals, the rest were kicked when he was either on the bench or on another opponent. 1 on 1 K has real talent waiting to be harnessed, he was caught out of position a few times with stevie j dropping back, but nothing he wont learn from.
Imo K had a better game than campbell brown.
      Good job special K
btw Stevie J’s dive over the boundary line to earn the free kick for in the back was a classic, dont like seeing dives but ill give credit where credits due

I have come to the conclusion that Brad Scott must have dinged Jeff Gieschen’s car in a shopping centre one day and not offered to pay for it. There is no other explanation for the fact that North Melbourne were absolutely stuffed by the umpires last weekend, commented to the AFL about it, received the exact same umpires this week and were stuffed all over again.
The umpires didn’t lose the match for North - 9 goals 17 will do that to you - but geez, there were some shocking decisions and an absolute blind eye turned to the many incidents of holding on Drew Petrie.

    • Martin says:

      08:52pm | 29/05/11

      Very true.

I watched that game and time and again wondered why the umpires were not giving North a reasonable go.

While Harvey’s playing for kicks was a bit obvious there were one or two other free kicks that could have been given which would have changed the game in the last couple of minutes.

    • Kate says:

      10:55pm | 29/05/11

I must admit that I had my eyes open for bad umpiring after the travesty that was Simon Black’s netball pass, excuse me, ‘legitimate handball’ last week. But it was worse than I’d expected.
It wasn’t the reason they lost, but it definitely would have ruined whatever momentum they had going towards the end.

    • Richard M says:

      10:57pm | 29/05/11

Crap.  There were just as many free kicks that should have gone the other way.  Don’t be fooled by the incredibly biased Melbourne commentators.  I couldn’t tell whether Dunstall in particular was commentating or just plain barracking for North.

Whilst I do believe football can be entertaining, its certainly not something “ballsy”. Its probably the most feminine form of sports in Australia.

Don’t know about the rest of you, but I don’t think there’s anything particularly courageous or manly about grown men grabbing each other’s collars but not doing anything more in case it wrecks their bleached haircut

“By the way, did anyone else think the Cats players were less than warm in their embrace of Gary Ablett after the game?” Cam Mooney spent ages with his arm around Gazza’s shoulder, ruffling his head; Jimmy Bartel broke into a huge smile when he hugged him; Matty Stokes wouldn’t let go of him, likewise Travis Varcoe; Cameron Ling gave him a big bear hug; Chappy almost knocked him over in his glee to see him again. And Gazza reciprocated. There was great sportsmanship allround. The only blokes I saw less than effusive were Menzel and Vardy (both new new recruits who would hardly know Gaz). I don’t know any Geelong supporter who really begrudges Ablett for going north, after he contributed so much to our club. He will always be a favourite son.

Great goal by Karmichael Hunt, but in the end the class divide between the two teams was vast. But give the Suns two or three years, and they will be a real contender.
