Julia Gillard has announced her new cabinet line-up today and it was pretty reflective of the new Prime Minister’s behaviour since taking the top job: smart and cautious.

Prime Minister Gillard has left Kevin Rudd to warm the backbench till after the election. It’s a harsh move but it’s a smart one given how angry Rudd must be at his cabinet colleagues at the moment.
Gillard has also not given in to the temptation to reward those MPs who were behind the Rudd coup, namely Victorian right faction leader Bill Shorten.
Former Trade Minister Simon Crean has taken Gillard’s ministerial duties of education and industrial relations, while Foreign Affairs Minister Stephen Smith increases his role taking on trade.
But the important thing to note about the current cabinet is only a short term fix till after the election.
Gillard has indicated that Rudd was none too pleased to find out that he won’t have a cabinet post, namely the Foreign Minister’s job which he wanted:
“There is nothing about this period that is happy or easy for Mr Rudd it is obviously a very, very stressful and difficult time.”
But Gillard has said that she would be “absolutely delighted” to have Rudd serve in the cabinet after the election if they win.
One questionable decision is to leave outgoing Finance Minister Lindsay Tanner where he is.
Finance Minister is a central portfolio, and Tanner has been part of the “gang of four” or “kitchen cabinet” that has been blamed for the over centralisation of government and subsequent poor decision making in cabinet. A new face going into the election to indicate a full break with the past would’ve been preferable.
The point here though is that the current cabinet is all about keeping a holding pattern till election takeoff, and the way Gillard is talking that is looking imminent.
