To me it will always be just a little bit Charlene from Neighbours… but in case you haven’t heard, double denim is back, baby - yeah!

Oh yes, you know you love it… Picture: Frank Violi

‘’Double denim’’, of course being the good old denim shirt/ jacket with denim jeans/shorts combo of the ‘80s and ‘90s.  AKA ‘’the denim suit’’.

And you can even feel free to team it with white sneakers a la Jerry Seinfeld in the mid 1990s.  Reeboks perhaps, for a really authentic ‘’vintage’’ look.

Yep – denim suits are in plenty of the uber cool international fashion blogs and glossy fashion mags at the moment.  Apparently it’s a look for both sexes.

The trend hasn’t really hit the streets of Adelaide yet – but I’d be curious to know if it’s out there interstate – and if so, how it’s looking.

According to Joff Chappell, from one of Adelaide’s flagship fashion boutiques, Miss Gladys Sym Choon, we’re still very much into the black denim look here (a trend that’s been knocking around for a good two or three years now).

It does look like double denim may be waiting in the wings though – for both men and women.

Globalize, a popular youth fashion chain in SA, VIC, NSW and the ACT, is offering a range of denim jeans, shirts vests and jackets.

Other youth retailers including Dotti, Forever New and Sportsgirl, are bringing similar denim pieces into their ranges and Country Road is doing the odd denim/chambray shirt.

And so to the big question: is double denim, which has for so long been considered the pinnacle of over-matched, outdated bad taste worth re-visiting?

Or do you risk people not realising that you’re being all vintage/anti-fashion/out-there cool and instead assuming you’re such a dag you never actually stopped doing the look the first time round?

Personally I think the double denim trend belongs in the ‘’If you remember doing it the first time around, avoid it this time’’ camp.

Hence I won’t be re-living my days of Tencel jeans, chambray shirts and high school parties involving lots of Peach cooler any time soon.

But others are more daring…

Here’s what Adelaide fashion stylist, event organiser and commentator Filip Odzak had to say about the trend:

``Oh, fantastic story!

``I have always been anti-double denim… until I was sitting in the audience for the Saint Augustine Academy show at (Royal Australian Fashion Week), previewing their (summer 2010) collection.
``It was styled to a tee, and I fell in love.

``The trend that once-was has been updated into a cutting edge and exciting trend that will be - with studding and embellishments!

``I have already put in my order, and yes, you will see me rocking the trend this summer!’‘

Filip’s tips for doing double denim the second time round include:

• Mix lighter denim with darker denim
• Go for fitted (not baggy) shirts and pants
• Look for embellishments and different textiles to break up the look

If I may add another one it would be

• Steer well clear of older folks who are still doing the look from the first time around – they might just cramp your style.

And here’s me wearing a chambray shirt (with black pants) at work today. Very stylish although Wikipedia says: “The chambray shirt was iconic of 1980s and 1990s”. I think that page needs to be updated.

Double denim will always be unfashionable, you can put a hessian bag on a model and they will look good, but for the common australian it’s the crescendo in bogan style.

And it’s not a denim suit, it’s called a Toronto Tuxedo!

I knew they would come back into fashion. Just as well my fashion style and wardrobe hasnt changed for 3 decades.
Wont be long till desert boots duffel coats, granpa shirts and cheesecloth for the gals, reappear .
Little changes , except the date, and SOME fashions.

Put it on Miranda Kerr or the Model above, pose appropriatley and shazam, you have a nice ensemble. Put any ordinary person in it and it just looks like an 80’s throw back. Never wear anything that you will look back on in 20 years and think ‘What was I thinking?’.

Double Denim is the biggest fashion No No since the peek-a-boo G string!

EXCUSE ME! ! ! When was it ever out of fashion. People will try to convinc you that they know what’s right for you, like a couple of years ago, “designer track suits” worn with high heels no less

Great article, considering it’s Jeans for Genes day tomorrow.  C’mon Australia, let’s all wear double denim tomorrow to support the Children’ts Medical Institute.

    • Maria says:

I’ll be wearing my Jeans tomorrow - but I certainly won’t be pairing it with a denim shirt or jacket!

never too early Dan, not too many weeks till movember. By then you should have a bountiful crop, and raise some bucks for mens health when you decide to be rid of the whiskers.
In my part of regional New South bush, beards are a little too hot for the summer time, so grow it, parade it, then off by end of november before the summer heat sets in.

Always looks good. Never stopped wearing it. Could be spoiled now though all the trendy wannabees will be wearing bad versions therefore for a year till it goes out again. Tragic

Now we just need acid wash denim to come back along with choose life and hypercolour t-shirts to see just how badly the fashion industry has run out of ideas.

    • Vivienne says:

      01:55pm | 06/08/10

Yes!! Bring back hypercolour!!  And then we can all start staring at Magic Eye posters too, it’ll be awesome.

Denim looks best on taller folk. Short-tails like myself prefer trousers with a ‘fluid’ drape, such as linen. And i’m surprized such material isn’t in wash’n wear. The subsequent crease’d be a knockout. Models can wear stuff that looks like it’s bin thrown on with a pitchfork, so denim looks ok on them.
Top and bottom denim is snazzy with a white hang-out shirt and lots of attituuuude.

      09:14pm | 05/08/10

Just wear what you want, why do you losers have to copy trends? just be yourself.

Ahh denim on denim - what a blast from the past.  I remember it well and of thinking then that it was all a bit unimaginative.  Still do.  With all the choice in textiles and finishes available a more interesting and creative approach with denim in the singular is the way to go.
