I’M guessing former NSW Health Minister John Della Bosca is not a big fan of comedy at the moment.

Della Bosca: the first NSW politician who could come out of a sex scandal better off

But he could end up having the last laugh if he can keep his slate clean amidst the latest murky allegations behind the murder of a Sydney businessman, secret tapes and corruption that threaten to sink the State Government.

If Della Bosca thinks he has had a bad week - having been exposed as an adulterer with a woman half his age and consequently quitting the ministry - his political position may actually have been strengthened while Premier Nathan Rees and the rest of his government battle another imbroglio.

When it comes to political sex scandals, it seems Aussies are just as happy as their counterparts in the US or Britain to lap up the salacious details. But they are perhaps more willing to forgive and forget such personal flaws.

Reader comments to online news sites across the country ran hot after details of Della Bosca’s affair were published by The Daily Telegraph last week.

Opinion was initially split over whether a politician’s private indiscretions were a reflection of trustworthiness in public life.

But, interestingly, quite a number of male readers changed their tune after the 26-year-old mistress was revealed as an attractive blonde comedian named Kate Neill.

John of Perth commented on Perth Now: “So he pulls a hot, young blonde. Who could resist that? What has that got to do with anyone other than him and his family?”
Pink Panther even found inspiration from Della Bosca, commenting on The Daily Telegraph site: “Every dark cloud has a silver lining. He has given hope to all fat, old, ugly, married men that somewhere there is a beautiful, young woman (half their age) who would be too eager to please them.”

Kay Kay of Newbankstownville sounded almost jealous: “Finding out that John Della Bosca gets more than you do? Sickening.”

But Anabel was not satisfied that the former health minister was truly repentant, commenting on the Herald Sun site: “The only thing that a man of his moral fibre would be sorry for was that he was caught!”

Juliet of Sydney, posting on The Daily Telegraph, aimed her criticism at Della Bosca’s choice of women and could not help but notice the similarity in the surname of his mistress and that of his wife, federal MP Belinda Neal: “Interestingly he had an affair with a woman with the same surname as his wife. Gawd! Mr Della Bosca’s choice in women is appalling. Pick a lover who won’t snitch on you next time, maybe one with some age and experience behind her.”

James of Maleny, Queensland, thought many people were being hypocritical in their judgment of the affair, writing on abc.net.au: “What is it about our two-faced Anglo values that gives us the right to sit in judgment on the private lives of public people? Get honest about your own erotic temptations and you might find yourself in the same position - unless you prefer hypocrisy.”

While Della Bosca’s political future was looking grim, one commenter to Adelaide Now wondered if there would be a bigger backlash closer to home. So far Belinda Neal appears to be standing by her man through his betrayal of her - at least publicly. But Dumbfounded of Bumside speculated there may be more to the story behind the doors of the family home: “The question is not whether John’s political career will survive this scandal, but rather whether he will survive Belinda. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned!”

But as Marie of Artarmon summed up best in a comment to The Daily Telegraph, Della Bosca’s now widely circulated aspirations to become premier may not be all lost: “Let they who have never done anything wrong in their life, cast the first stone. As it is, Mr Della Bosca has lost his dignity, respect and support from all those close to him. Let him retreat quietly to refocus and rebuild.”

In the political playhouse, we may yet see Della Bosca’s return in the next scene of this comedy of errors that is the NSW Government.

Marcus, it sounds to me like you are rather pro-adultery. I do not share your views. The man is a scumbag. He is married with children. If he doesn’t want to be a home-wrecker then he shouldn’t have married and had two children in the first place. If he wants to play around then stay single and nobody gets hurt !!!!!!! Your article is extremely one-sided and I am sure a great majority DO NOT share your views.

All may not be lost for DB. Rees is so short of talent that he may be forced to bring him back into the ministry soon. Alternatively, Rees is so unpopular as Premier that the NSW ALP may prefer an adulterer to lead them than a man so clearly out of his depth. I don’t think the voters would judge DB badly for an affair. They have plenty of other reasons to judge the NSW ALP government badly at the moment.

Che Sara Sara, so he had an affair, that is between his wife and him, me I don’t care if politicians have 50 mistresses, as long as they do their job, I mean the man believed to be the best US President had women lining up to be with him, John F Kennedy.

This is an article highlighting the shift in public values.  By the comments gathered so far it seems that some consider marriage to be an old, rigid “institution” crippling their personal desires to have multiple partners.

In my view, JDB has done something wrong.  If he wants multiple partners than dont marry.  If you are married and attracted to something else, go through the right channels and advising your partner, your family of your intentions…  It shows lack of character, lack of choice and yes it reflects on the person overall!

In principle I agree that with the ideal that a person’s public life is separate from their personal life, except that in practice it is very difficult to achieve. The truth is there really is no separation between public and private for these people, so although I am uncomfortable with the coverage of this event, I think it is a necessary evil.

The real issue is that a Minister with aspirations for the Premiership having an affair is vulnerable…and a vulnerable politician is using the public resources at their disposal to protect them selves rather than to defend and promote the public interest.  On balance I think it is better for the affair to be uncovered and for the Minister to resign.  No doubt the vested interest groups which enjoyed having a weak and non-interventionist Minister in their portfolio will be disappointed to see him go.

kp putting to one side the shrill tone of your self righteous outrage, I think you have an inaccurate view of what constitutes a majority but then we’ll never know will we which just highlights the pointlessness of your statement.
I think DB did something wrong by his wife and children, I don’t think his actions reflect well on him at all.
But I find it utterly ridiculous to suggest that his actions make him less qualified for public office. Have all his critics never heard of competence?
What do they think humanity would have acheived over time without the contributions of only those conforming to the morality of the time. Not very much if you have any grasp of history and the flaws and misdemeanours of many of those contributions across a variety of fields have to been vital to the lifestyle we now enjoy.
Are all the self righteous moralists going to do a Pol Pot and take us back to year zero in order to wipe the moral slate clean and do away with PM Ministers who drank too much, Military leaders who were failures in day to day life only to become the crucial man of the moment, or scientists who treated their spouses poorly?

If any politician could get away with cheating on his wife it’s della.  Now that we all know who she is, who could blame him for leaving her?  He should have frontend the press pack and enquired “well do you blame me?”

It is all a scheme to get Della Bosca out of the spotlight for the fallout from the McGurk Tape Affair (are we calling it McGurkgate yet?).  Or is there a new scandal this morning?  And has anyone ever seen Richo and Jim Byrne together?

S writes that John F. Kennedy is believed to have been one of the best US presidents. Where did you get that from, S? JFK is widely recognized as having been a disaster (Bay of Pigs,Cuba etc.)  . Maybe that’s why they bumped him off!

I would be happy to have NSW Ministers to be having nighly orgies in Parliament House, as long as they brought in an integrated ticketing system, integrated timetables, and express and semi-express trains, and managed hospitals so that the had short waiting lists, low infection rates and didn’t act as homes for possums.

the only MP who is likely to lose their job over the McGurk issue is Barry Do Nothing - he has stuffed up this totally!

Darren@3:34 Absolutely.  Who in their right mind would say anything based on what Jim Byrnes says?  It is almost as silly as parading Richo as part of your defence.

I feel very sorry for the young lady who had the affair with John Della B. She must either need glasses or is short on dates to choose a fellow like that! Wouldn’t an attractive 26 year old be socialising with males of her own age or is she a vulture that has been hypnotised by the person of power ?
