Julia Gillard will never be accused of being a conviction politician. The announcement of a ‘panel’ to decide her climate policy is the final step in the Labor Party handing over its policy development to focus groups.

So guys, any thoughts on what the price on carbon should be? Photo: Kym Smith.

This makes the NSW State Labor take-over of the Federal Labor Party complete. While we thought Kevin Rudd was hollow, Julia Gillard makes him look like a man of steel.

This is presumably the same Julia Gillard who in late 2009 said, ‘we can’t afford any more inquiries, reports or investigations into climate change’.  So presumably, this didn’t include talk fests.

For months Julia Gillard and her Labor mates have been abusing Tony Abbott’s direct action approach to climate change.  And the response?  A focus group.  Wow, how inspiring.

This raises real questions on what a re-elected Gillard Government would really do?

The truth about the Gillard policy record is appalling.  Putting aside the fact that she was there for every decision made by the Rudd Government, her personal contribution to policy has been appalling.

Her first major foray into policy was the famous ‘Medicare gold’ which was one of the key issues that saved the Australian people from a Mark Latham prime ministership.  It was the policy that would have sent Australia to the brink of bankruptcy.

Julia Gillard is responsible for the computers in schools programme – a $1.2 billion blow out, 300 000 laptops delivered out of 970 000 promised, no broadband hook up for schools as was promised in 2007 and the programme delayed for longer than the duration of World War 1.

Following this, was the so-called ‘Building the Education Revolution’ that has wasted more money than any programme in Australia’s history.  It has been estimated that it has wasted up to $8 billion.

Julia Gillard authored the famous ‘double drop off’ policy with 260 extra child care centres promised.  A policy that was so badly thought through only 8 were delivered before it was dumped.

Finally her first two forays into policy since being Prime Minster have shown an equal ineptitude.

The so-called mining tax fix which appears to be nothing but an agreement to negotiate if the government is re-elected.  There is no plan to release before the election exactly how the tax will work and if indeed she will be willing to agree with the Greens proposals to go further to get it through the Senate.

Then to top it off the new Prime Minister announced that she would create an immigration processing centre in East Timor without speaking first to their Prime Minister.  This not only shows a complete disregard for diplomatic niceties, but plays into the perception that Australia is a bully in regional affairs.

What it shows is someone who is utterly unequipped to be the Prime Minister.

The Labor Party brutally knocked off a sitting Prime Minister to install a new and more popular version to get them through the election campaign.  All they want to talk about between now and August 21 is personalities so as to hide their record and there lack of a coherent plan for the future of Australia.

The Labor campaign is extra-ordinary in that a first term government seeking re-election has nothing positive to say at all about the future.  All we have are glib slogans and promises to have a forum.

Julia Gillard’s record is underlined by incompetence.  She doesn’t stand for anything because she believes only in her ambition to be Prime Minister.

Australians have a choice on August 21 between this and a Liberal Party that will actually take action on the issues that challenge our future.

Australia deserves better than a focus group driven, NSW Labor styled Prime Minister.

Gillard/Rudd are incompetent. Rudd failed, Gillard is failing and Australia has to wake up to this reality.

Although a conservative I’m secretly hoping that Labor win the election with the Greens holding the balance of power in the senate.

Gillard is a total trainwreck. She is without doubt one of the most incompetent parliamentarians in history. We gave the Labor party an extra term in NSW and they are about to be thrown out of Power so comprehensively that I doubt if I will see another Labor Premier in NSW during my lifetime.

Three years with Gillard as PM and the Greens in the Senate will show Australians just how totally inept both parties are and the electorate will vote them into oblivion that will take them decades to recover from.

Three years isn’t really that long. Personally I think it’s worth it to gain decades of competent government from the coalition.

Hey peanut gallery, I’ll save you the effort.

“Jamie’s a Lib MP, one-eyed biased blah blah blah”.

That’s as may be.  He’s also right.  Suck it up.

A worthy try SkepDad, but I’m afraid probably pointless. They’ll still be here bleating soon enough.

Remember if a biased Lib posts here, they can’t possibly be right no matter what they say or how much proof they have, simply because they’re biased.
Whereas the biased Labor supporters who write Punch pieces clearly have the ability to shape reality merely with the power of their words and produce rainbows out of their butts at will.

      I will say it agaim.

There is a mystique about Gillards competence that does not gel with the facts.

      She is inept.

And scarily it can be seen Rudd really was the brains of the operation.

If Gillard was a man there is no way she would have had the numbers to assassinate Rudd. A man would be held up to stronger standards. A man in her position expected to perform.

Simply Labor and the whatever it takes attitude. She is a caretaker for 2 years anyway. Even if Labor win in a month Shorten and Combet will turf her out before long. The precedent for shafting sitting PM’s has been set after all.

If you apply the same standard to Tony Abbott I think any sane person would see he is a focus group laptop aswell.

      Interesting.

The only politician in Australia prepared to take a stand against “global warming” when it was pretty toxic to be anything but green.

I would think that the nation owes a huge debt to Kevin Andrews and Abbott for stopping the ETS dead in its track alone.

Without them we would have a system everywhere else is trying to run away from one like in the US with the democrats abandoning cap and trade.

That stand was supposed to be the start of the annihilation of the Libs. Funny how if you have a conviction and follow through people respect you. Ask Rudd what happens if you don’t.

Precisely why we should be focused on parties and policies, not the toothy smiles at the top.

Jamie, you remain a little turd and a blight on the Coalition. You are a first rate liability for Abbot, the Liberal Party and the nation as a whole - please don’t nominate for Mayo.

Maybe it’s time to form a focus group to assess the merits of focus groups?  Then again, maybe not?  Perhaps I should put it to a focus group to assess the merits of forming a focus group to assess the merits of focus groups?  Now there’s a plan…....???

The hypocrisy of most of the above posts in incredible.  Look at all these die hard Lib supporters complaining about Labor bias when none has actually been posted.  Yet if you go to the more recent article about Bennelong what do we find.  Yes that is right, Lib supporters complaining about Labor bias.

    • TimB says:

      11:49am | 29/07/10

Andrew, we said it’s *coming*. Not that it’s *already* here. When you look at the track record of Nosthow, Christian Real, Rob R, etc etc, we know what’s likely to be posted. We’re just pre-empting them.

And whilst he doesn’t actuall yell “bias!”, Knut’s post just 2 above your own is pretty close to the kind of mindless, poisonous posts we’re expecting.

Just for the record: Nothing wrong with bias. Everyone has a point of view and thus a bias. The trick is to back it up with facts and proper reasoning. It’s when that doesn’t happen that you can rightly complain (assuming you have a valid counterpoint).
If there is any Lib supporters in that other thread that are simply insulting the poster and not actually providing a counter-argument then yes, you’re right, they’re just as bad.

I don’t get this ‘delayed for longer than the duration of World War 1’ claim that the Liberals are making. Are they just stupid or outright lying?

World War One: July 1914 - November 1918: 4 years and 5 months.
      ALP Government:  December 2007 - July 2010: 2 Years 8 Months.

Even if the schools computer programme began on day one of the ALP Government, it is hardly longer than the duration of WWI…

    • MarK says:

      10:41am | 29/07/10

He was talking about the delays in it. When first announced it was to be done withing the first term of the government. I cannot recall the exact wording or timing but suffice to say it is a tad behind its initial promise.

The time frame for delivery on the full scheme has been pushed out until the never never.

      His comment is correct.

      Gillard is crap…Abbott is hopeless.

Who the hell are we supposed to vote for? They all lie and talk rubbish to get into power, once they get there they usually don’t do what they promised anyway.

    • Another very confused swing voter (PatC) says:

I don’t have an answer. Minor Parties in the senate I guess. The local member is Labor and he’s not too bad. He did stick up for Rudd when Rudd was being knifed, but still I can’t bring myself to vote for more BERS, more debt, more pink battesque schemes, and a crap ETS scam. The other blokes a religious nutter and I can’t vote for him either. Maybe I’ll just abstain on this one.

    • IMHO says:

What’s with the Coalitions mad-capped maternal leave scheme? It’s as wonky as any Labour party policy. Why don’t you suggest some positive reasons for voting for you rather than attacking Julliard and the rest? Same old, same old. I agree with above - what’s a true small ‘l’ liberal to do?

    • DD Ball says:

      09:36pm | 29/07/10

I think you summed it up well. Gillard has nothing to offer, and she is giving it her all.

    • Daniel says:

little of it is actually reported because maybe it wouldn’t fit in with the relentlessly negative message that is constantly being promoted.I think that it would be useful to ask ourselves why this campaign against an elected government has taken on such a life of its own, rather than imagine that it has little effect. It’s getting to the stage where this negativity is a bit redolent of a ‘blaming the victin’ mentatlity. And let’s make no mistake – Rudd is the victim of a vicious media campaign, as well as some mistakes of his own making.
