Chris O'Brien, who died in Sydney today.

He became a household name on Channel 9’s reality television program RPA but it was Professor Chris O’Brien’s 20 year commitment to pioneering head and neck surgery in Australia that saw him celebrated by so many.

O’Brien, who died overnight in Sydney, was diagnosed with a glioblastoma multiforme, an aggressive form of brain cancer, in November 2006. His treatment included meditation and herbal medicine and Prof O’Brien is reported to have undergone brain surgery five times in a bid to remove the tumour.

Here are some of the stories around about him today:

What a loss. How very sad for his family and those who knew him personally. He seemed like a man of great compassion and was an inspiration to many. He will be missed, but not forgotten.

Having read his book a couple of months ago, I found it really inspirational.  He came from a very modest background which proves anyone can excel if they try.  He was dedicated to his studies, his patients, loved his family and had a tremendous outlook on life as shown in his final years.  He will be sadly missed and our hearts go out to his wife and children of whom he was so very proud.
