But maybe the Tea Party IS full of cranks and crazies
This morning Treasurer Wayne Swan took a big swipe at Romney’s party, saying it was full of “cranks and crazies”. He was having a go at the Tea Party, who he thinks would be responsible for the US economy going off a “fiscal cliff”.
The Republican Party does have its fair share of cranks and crazies.
Take Paul Akin, who thought that women couldn’t get pregnant from rape. Well, ‘legitimate rape’, to be specific.
Romney’s running mate Paul Ryan wanted to make cuts to education and to healthcare for the elderly to finance tax cuts for America’s richest.
And Mitt Romney? Well here’s what the political analysts at Mad Magazine reckon*...
Mr Swan wasn’t talking about such obvious nutjobbery. He was talking about complex financial systems. Having said that, he could well be right.
In general frankness is welcomed in politics, as long as you don’t have funny ideas about bestiality (although better out than in, in the case of Bernardi**).
But should Swan have said it? It’s great that’s he doesn’t pussyfoot around, and he’s free to say it. But should he?
He’s not alone in having a crack at our ally. As The Australian points out, then Prime Minister John Howard went after Barack Obama, saying:
“If I was running al-Qaeda in Iraq, I would put a circle around March 2008 and pray, as many times as possible, for a victory not only for Obama, but also for the Democrats.”
Mark Latham’s famous “conga line of suckholes” comment was about Australian Liberal MPs pandering to then US president George Bush, whom he also referred to as “the most incompetent and dangerous president in living memory”.
If it turns out that Obama was actually born overseas, there’s a chance Romney could get in.
That could be awkward.
But surely not even the most batshit crazy politicians would make policy decisions based on a political slight – surely it wouldn’t affect the alliance… but should politicians tone things down in the name of diplomacy, or tell it like (they think) it is?
