Good point, ever notice how badly dressed people are the most mysterious? Any boob can buy what’s in style. Its the weirdos that make the world interesting

      Is that really him?

I agree, that beard is extremely offensive, and it covers part of his face. Ban lamb chops!

That’s not a beard, they’re some extremely unclassy mutton chops!

I might not agree with his facial hair, but I defend his right to wear it.

      Are those mutton chops?
Why doesnt he just go the full beard and cover up the second chin.

    • Steely Dan says:

      03:47pm | 24/09/10

      @ ben

They’re mutton chops, but they’re not halal.

Harsh but fair. Ironically if he was wearing a Niqab , noone would be able to see the beard.

Say no to muffin tops, those stupid oversized sunglasses and to ugg boots being worn in public!

While we’re at it, say no to people playing music on their phones on the train, bus or anywhere else.  No one else wants to hear your crappy Akon song through an even crappier phone speaker.

WOW. So we’re not even talking about women, yet still the misogyny prevails.

    • Budz says:

Im sure women can come up with plenty against men too. Stuff about bad shoes etc. etc.

That is a joke, for those of you who can not tell.

    • Daryl says:

A comment about a mans bad sense in fashion (bad beard) is just as ‘sexist’ as a comment about a women’s bad sense in fashion (muffin top jeans) - you pointing out the ‘prevailing misogyny’ is a little hypocritical..

    • Eric says:

      07:26pm | 24/09/10

      Let me get this straight.

So, some men criticise another man’s beard - and somehow this represents hatred of women?

      Please explain.

    • Dan says:

      09:42am | 26/09/10

Stephen, you’re absolutely right. If Sergio think he can comment on women’s clothing choices, we can comment on his facial hair.

    • marley says:

      07:14pm | 24/09/10

Ayup.  Sergio has a right to his mutton chops and his ban-the-burqa mural.  He may be (and seems to me, is) a complete dork, but he has the absolute right to be one.  That’s what genuine freedom is all about.

    • cleangreenneen says:

      09:18pm | 24/09/10

That facial hair is so un-Australian. It is totally inappropriate in our post-colonial nation. It is only excusable if he is an extra in a period drama… Though he may wish to reflect on “a pair of fine eyes and the face of a pretty woman”, Mr Darcy he ain’t.

    • Reg says:

      10:24am | 25/09/10

Beards are for hiding weak jaws or bolstering the confidence of the wearer that he is hidden from the world. The anonymity of the beard is the refuge of the scoundrel, or the lazy, or the coward, or the sneaky, or the untrustworthy. It’s also hot, smelly and eeerky. If you’re not prepared to do a Salvador Dali with your beard then you shouldn’t have one.

Now who is offending who??  I’m sure you won’t need protection by security guards, or lose your job???  for insulting Sergio??? You can be sure if you were saying this about a muslim’s beard you would need protecting!  Why are the media tolerating intolerance????  Why are you not defending our rights of freedom of speech??? An Australian cleric calls for the beheading of Gert Wilders, where is the same outrage & exposure from the media??? Muslim Clerics on tv offended about a murial???  Dont see them on tv,  offended when muslims burn a flag, a bible, call for Jihad, daming our god forsaken country, call for sharia law or call ng for beheadings???? If the media continue to be so politically correct, our society is doomed! Muslims aren’t the ones that have death threats on them, non muslims are!  If we aren’t allowed to criticise Islam, they will continue to demand, and continue to silence us, it is not racism, it is not bigotry, it is not islamophobic, and the burqa is not Australian, and has no place anywhere, except in the 7th century!  And too bad if it offends Muslims, they are offended by everything un islamic, there are certain rules you live by in our secular society, it is not Sharia Law, you can’t go naked down the street, there are certain dress codes people have to adhere to - it is not in the koran, it is not religious, and just because they want to wear it WELL TOUGH!  What happens when they want seperate swimming pools (sorry thats already happened) How about Halal meat in schools and Jails, praying 5 times a day at work, no pork in schools because if offends them?? when does it end? how about our rights? we are being bullied and discriminated!  we are the ones getting death threats not them???

    • @SecularNSW says:

      10:57am | 13/03/11

Sergio is actually using the Burqa to start a debate about other aspects of Islam, such as the call by some extremists to bring in Sharia Law into Australia (this is already happened in UK) and the fear that many have that some Muslims do not integrate well into Australian society. I have actually met Sergio face to face. He believes in free expression and gay rights etc, so he is not the typical extreme right nut-job. I question whether the burqa image in hindsight was the best way to state the conversation Sergio and many others wanted. For one, it always ends up being a debate about clothing, when in fact he is trying to use the image as a symbol of extremist, political islam. To this end the image is I believe not working because (a) people are getting too caught up talking about clothing (and beards etc), and (b) Sergio is being used by far right elements such as the Australian Protectionist Party, Islamist Monitor and some fundamentalist right wing Christian groups. I don’t think that is his intention, and Sergio needs to start choosing his friends a bit more carefully in this regard.
