A news conference will be held shortly to shed more light on the accident which has claimed the lives of ABC journalist Paul Lockyer, cameraman John Bean and chopper pilot Gary Ticehurst. We’ll update details as they come through.

Tragic loss: Lockyer, Ticehurst and Bean. Image: supplied and James Elsby.

For now, we invite you to share your memories of these three highly experienced professionals, and to offer your sympathies to their families.

The three were killed in a chopper accident in South Australia last night, north of Lake Eyre.

Mr Lockyer was one of the ABC’s finest, known for his empathy and his uncomplicated communication - especially in the bush, where he did much of his finest work.

“There’s a certain kind of genius that can find the simplicity on the other side of complexity and that’s what Paul could do,” ABC managing director Mark Scott told ABC radio today.

Mr Ticehurst was an incredibly experienced pilot who was one of the heroes of the tragic 1998 Sydney Hobart yacht race, helping save at least 20 sailors.

Mr Bean was a vastly experienced man behind the camera, who had worked across a raft of ABC shows. There’s a good insight into why he was so well-loved in some of his old blogs here.

Vale, three of the Australia’s finest.

      I am only familiar with the face of Paul Lockyer and during the Queensland floods, I really only watched his reports. He had a way of delivering required news with appropriate emotion. He was just a messenger to the viewing audience but you got the feeling that when the camera was turned off he was somone the suffering people could have a yarn to without fear of it being part of the story. One of the oldschool journalists who stayed away from the lense, but when in front of it he could deliver an off the cuff, relevant monologue without the aid of autocue and not a single “um”. A true journalist.

      Of course, he was part of a team. This is so sad and such a great shame. May all three gentlemen rest in peace.

      Paul Lockyer was in my opinion the finest ABC journalist of recent times.A sad loss indeed.

      What a tragic loss of life of one of the most professional teams in the country.  Who can forget the dedication and the passion of, the absolutely likeable Paul Lockyer, reporting on the Laye Eyre and Murray-Darling documentaries, and the beauty of John Bean’s cinematrography.  I’m sure the long flying career and skill of pilot Gary Ticehurst made up a trio of absolute trust in each other, which together made such a professional team. Condolences to their families. Vale their passing.

      @Soames I agree, but we all have our own time to die.  Let’s hope that most of us actually achieve something which is as important as those three guys’ contribution to our happiness. Time is precious, but some of people seem to believe they’ll live forever?

      No words that i can ever type could make sense to the loss of these 3 Australians, could never console the range of feelings that the families of these men are going through and can never deliver to anyone what dedication and what proffessionlism that my 2 ABC collegues carried with them. Whilst i didnt know Gary, i am sure he is still flying smooth and fast ,and with full tank accompanied by Paul and John somewhere.

      Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,

      And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

      Sunwards I’ve climbed and joined the tumbling mirth

      Of sun-split clouds – and done a thousand things

      You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung

      High in the sunlit silence. Hovering there,

      I’ve chased the shouting wind along and flung

      My eager craft through footless halls of air,

      Up, up the long delirious burning blue

      I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace,

      Where never lark, or even eagle, flew;

      And, while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod

      The high untrespassed sanctity of space,

      Put out my hand, and touched the face of god.

      Rest in peace my friends

      They are all a sad loss to their families ,Australia ,ABC and the world all three gave us a view of Australia a lot of us will never see. The families will be truly devastated ,as will the ABC especially those those who have worked with Paul over the years. He was truly a natural in front of the camera it just loved him as I am sure as did all who viewed his programmes.R.I.P

      Very sad.  I’ve only been exposed to the work of Paul Lockyer, and he was understatedly brilliant.  My condolences to all family and friends

      I cannot say as I recall any of them though Paul’s face is a little familiar and that is often the case where a story is told so well, it is the story and not the teller.
      Obviously they were all highly respected and acknowledged by many as being great people who will be sorely missed.
      RIP guys.

      One of my dad’s RAAF mates was a chopper pilot in Vietnam. He told me once that if you fly in choppers for long enough you will die in one. He hasn’t been in one since he came back in 1972.

      RIP to these guys and condolenses to their families and loved ones.

      Very sad news. Having shot out of many helicopters myself, once even having to almost ditch into the ocean when our chopper experienced engine difficulties, it brings home how easy it is for something like this to happen whenever we head up to shoot something. My thoughts are with their families and collegues.

      My sincerest condolences to all loved ones, I guess the only comfort I can offer the families is that albeit too young, Paul, Gary, and John died doing something they loved so much more than just a job wich is abundantly evident in the quality of product wich they consitently deliverd.

      When I was 14 in 1974 Lake Eyre was filled for what was called a one in one hundred year event and I never dreamed that it would happen again in my lifetime, thanks to these three fellow Australians and the ABC I was able to witness the spectacular event again.
