New A-League team The Melbourne Heart, who kick off in the 2010/11 season, have unveiled a shocking logo to match their unbelievably stupid team name.

What's wrong with this picture? Picture: Supplied.

At least they’re consistent.

The logo, which looks like an unironed pair of undies emblazoned with rugby posts, was designed by the “international brand design consultancy” Elmwood, who apparently have offices in loads of big important cities as well as Leeds, UK.

Check it out above. Way to make people laugh at you in a crowded sporting market. As bad as the logo is, I still don’t know what’s worse: it or the team name.

In my time as a writer for Alpha magazine I’ve come across some truly hilarious team names. Last year, while writing about anonymous Aussie sporting millionaires who play overseas, I discovered a Japanese baseball club Nippon Ham Fighters.

Said it then and I’ll say it again now. Mmmmm. Fighting ham.

Here in Australia, we trended away from your standard scary, vicious animals etc to more abstract team names in about the mid ’90s. Port Adelaide Power, with their weird lightning man logo, were one of the harbingers. At least they sound vaguely imposing.

And the names just keep getting kookier. Today, in the Trans-Tasman netball league, we’ve got the Canterbury “Tactix” and the Central “Pulse”, who presumably intimidate opposition with their lentil-like fierceness.

But the worst team names are always the ones named after emotions. America had the Philadelphia Soul Arena Football team (a failed indoor NFL spinoff). Perhaps the Soul were doomed from day one, given they were owned by Jon Bon Jovi who’s about as soulful as the Port Power are powerful.

But back to the Heart. This is the daddy of bad names. This is a name so bad it makes iSnack 2.0 seem like a reasonably accurate description of brown goo.

Presumably, the name is an oblique reference to Melbourne’s self-pronounced position as Australia’s sporting capital. As for the logo, well, here’s the word from the Heart PR department.

“The logo is a contemporary interpretation of the traditional heraldic shield, incorporating the club’s initials, M and H, within a subtle stylised heart.”

Uh-huh. Like I said, undies and rugby posts.

Look, I know the trend in logos has gone all soft across the board, to the point where banks like ANZ and oil companies like BP look more like plant nurseries. But surely the heart could have been a little more tattoo parlour and a little less international brand design consultancy.

And you know what I would’ve named the team? I would’ve called it something unmistakably Melbourne and unmistakably menacing. Like the “Melbourne King St 3am”. Or what about this beauty: “The Melbourne Carey”.

      the logo is design genius…
look at the ny yankies logo.. it has become a brand in it’s own right.. if only GCU had a logo like this, SHIT YEAH, I am envious.

the name ‘heart’ is cool as well, braveheart was a great movie

Err Anthony, the Nippon Ham Fighters are not a team of fighting hams. The team is called the Hokkaido Fighters or officially the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters - Nippon-Ham are the sponsor.

Another shocking name along with the Victory, Glory and other ‘non-concrete’ names.  They sound so dated, lame and gey.  Imagine teams in the EPL etc calling themselves ‘the heart’?  hahahahaha So soft.

Soccer is the McDonalds of the sports world.  Found everywhere but still cr*p.

Check Heerenveen (Dutch soccer club) on image search for their logo.

The Hearts is a well known team in Scotland, however their logo doesn’t look THAT bad. It’s more of an epic fail.

Great poke Anthony. As rob quite rightly says above its very easy to criticise everything. If you take a look at the other A’league logo’s, its leagues apart - they all tend to feel very american, withswooshes, go faster stripes and footballs everywhere (just incase you didn’t know).

I like the name and the logo - its strong, passionate and different.
Anthony, you might consider going home, getting back in bed and getting out the other side.

To those AFL bogans, who claim that real football wont catch on this country - where were you in 2006 when 100,000’s of people got up at 2am in the morning to watch a game of soccer involving our National team.  But sure no one cares hey.

Were you one of the 90,000 in Sydney that night that Johnny Aloisi popped that penalty away - sure no one cared about the game that night.

Were you one of the 55,000+ people who have twice watched the Victory win the A-League - sure no cared about that game

Were you one of the people who attended the football at the Olympics where packed out stadiums watched games NOT involved Australia - sure no one cared about those games.

No one is disputing that the AFL is a better domestic code than the A-League and so it should because without support in Melbourne, Adelaide & Perth the AFL wouldnt exist.  Even without the A-League, football would exist in every other place on earth abotu 95% of whom dont care or in fact havent heard about the AFL.  So get back into your little insular world before the big scary world starts to engulf you

The logo I think is actually quite good and represents the name well. HOWEVER the name is an absolute shocker.

For the record the Philadelphia Soul won the last ArenaBowl played in 2008, and partially due to the economy the competition went into hiatus in 2009. The league had been around for some 23 years. A second Arena Football 2 still was conducted last year. This year a new national Arena Football League was created combining some teams from Arena Football 2, the original Arena Football league and some newly formed franchises. Philadelphia was not one of these teams. Arena Football are still working on getting up and running again, but whether that happens remains to be seen.

Come to think of it, they may actually be onto something with the whole “underpants” logo thing. It could prove to be a very wise move in the future:

It’s abundantly clear that the majority of Australians are NEVER going to agree with officially calling soccer just “football” in this country, so at some stage the ignorant illiterates in charge are going to have to wise up and rebrand the game in Australia yet again. Evidently they don’t want to go back to “soccer”, so a new name will have to be found. As the word “ASSociation” is essential in determining which code of “footBALL” is being referred to, and given the overwhelmingly camp Broadway musical theatrics in the game, the choice is perfectly obvious - “ASS BALL”.

Melbourne Guts would have been good.  Or Melbourne Death (Victory v Death Derby, sweet).  But yes, abstract names suck (Heart of MIdlothian expresses a specific and strong sentiment - ask a Hibs fan - not a neutered researched-to-death marketing position)...and if the local trend started where you say it did then that’s another thing I can blame on Port Adelaide.  They may be last but I will always be thankful the proponents of the Adelaide side that they went with “United”...can’t be sure it wasn’t inadvertant given the apparently irrresistable impulse to give new teams stupid names but whatever the reason, we dodged a bullet there.  Pity we can’t score to save ourselves.

If the esteemed writer of this column had some knowledge and a bit of knowledge about world football they would know how popular Hearts in
the Scottish leage are. This will be my new number two team in the A-League. So much better than some of the ridicolous names of teams in the

Melbourne Victory and Melbourne Heart (A-League)
      Melbourne Storm (NRL)
Melbourne Rebels (Super 15)... ok this is ok.
I don’t like AFL but the nicknames are generally ok.
I could go into some minor sports too…. Heaven knows what will happen when crickets T20 goes franchise and what Mel bourne will call their T20 franchise…..

    • Martin G says:

      01:38pm | 03/02/10

Well, Anthony Patch, American Football is actually, per game, the highest attended sporting league in the world. AFL is not far behind, with the AFL Grand Final is watched by up to 170 million people worldwide each year. I guess no-one gives a toss. How many people attended the A-League last year?

I’d rather watch AFL, NRL, NFL or Gaelic Football than sitting down to a game where it is very possible there will be a boring scoreless draw.

Anyway, back on topic, are you saying you like the name and logo?

    • AFR says:

      07:37am | 04/02/10

Sporting teams and their names have evolved over time.  The Melbourne Demons used to be known as the Fuschia’s.  Essendon weren’t the Bombers until the 1940’s.

Good move by Gold Coast AFL side to let their name evolve.  That way they won’t end up with something like ‘the Dockers’, or the Canberra ‘Raiders’ or the Melbourne ‘Storm’.

As for Heart, forget about it.

    • Michael C. Donovan says:

Well said, TheBigMicka.  Let’s not forget, North Melbourne Kangaroos used to be the Shinboners, Melbourne were the Redlegs and Fitzroy had a gorilla as their mascot before they became the Lions.

I actually like the name Melbourne Heart, it works well.  The logo definitely leaves a lot to be desired, but I’m sure it will evolve, just as other sporting teams have done, into a more appealing logo.

We need names like teams in the IPL league; “Delhi Daredevils”, “Kolkata Knight Riders”, “Mumbai Indians”, “Rajasthan Royals” etc.

Actually I think it’s a great logo and a great choice of colours.  The name has also grown on me.  Most soccer people I’ve talked to have a similar people to me

I like the name Melbourne Heart & I like the club emblem, it is modern, sharp & different. The ‘Heart’ represents what football is all about..emotion, excitement, passion etc.  A-League football clubs in Aus need nicknames like these to have an identity to be easily recognised because rugby & Australian Rules have adopted & largely copied their rubbish names from American team sports. Anthony Sharwood, stick to that ‘trusted’ mag Alpha…it’s great for cleaning the bbq.

      PatMac,

I think Boca was referring to more recent club identities such as the ‘Titans’, ‘Power’, ‘Force’, ‘Warriors’, etc. After all, i don’t even think the yanks even know what a ‘Rabbitoh’ is!

    • PatMac says:

      09:55pm | 03/02/10

Just a bit of history Boca, the VFL/AFL has been around for about 110 years, far longer than most of the American clubs you purport them to have “copied” their names from.

    • Makka says:

Pretty awful, I admit, but in my book the Brisbane Lions still take the award for their new horrendous emblem, going from the time-honoured & heraldic Fitzroy Lion to a logo taken straight from a box of Paddlepops.

    • Eagles fan says:

      01:05pm | 03/02/10

Hilariously put - and I agree.  All supporting clubs should be preserving their history.  I’m a West Coast supporter and although it’s a young club I still think they should have kept the their original logo.  It was also much more distinct than the one they have now.

It’s a SOCCER team, playing in the most woeful league in the world, in a country that worships AFL, Rugby League and Rugby Union.

Who really gives a crap what they’re called or what their logo is???

    • Pat Mac says:

      09:51pm | 03/02/10

Aussie Born and Bred, stop picking on the soccer girls or they will run home with their magic sponge and tell their mummies, that’s if they don’t go for a dive first!!!

    • Ray says:

    • Aussie Born and Bred says:

The only area that soccer is superior is the acting skills of plyaers who writhe around on the ground after not even being touched.

I’d rather watch 80 minutes of an exciting sport that’s only played in Australia, than sit through 90 minutes of a boring sport that’s played worldwide.

    • John says:

      01:09pm | 03/02/10

Well said 100% AUS,  Aussie Born and Bred is one of the many who are content with Australia are being the best in the world at inferior sports some facts Rugby League there will only ever be 3 competitive nations, Rugby Union maybe 4 or 5 then for the almighty AFL you guessed it Australia will always be the best in the world now that is something to get exited about.

    • 100% AUS says:

      10:06am | 03/02/10

Aussie Born and Bred: another typical, sorry & useless comment. If you want to witness sport being worshipped, get out of redneckville, get on a plane & visit Europe, South America, Africa, Asia & attend a football match. Rugby League & AFL in this country have the best competitions because the game is only played here. Naturally the A-Laegue is not going to be the best competition after 5 seasons because there are over another 200 leagues around the world.

If you havent got any news to write about - how about changing jobs and working in a bar - somewhere like Bali - because thats the level audience you are playing to

it’s a helluva lot better than the following: ‘Fury’ ‘Victory’ ‘Glory’ ‘roar’ - Ooooh lookout lads, we’re playing the ROOOOAAAAAARRRR this week, give me a break! Any of these, or even a team like the ‘Wollonggong University Books’ would have been far more worthy of your vitriol. ‘Heart’ isn’t bad by comparison.

    • ~Rumpleteazer~ says:

i agree i like the traditional shirt. but cmon the heart??
it works fine if your an established scottish club founded way back but they could have gotten far better names.

While I’m still open minded about the name and logo of Melbourne Heart let me remind you of what I and many others consider to be the most romantic name in world football. I am of course referring to the famous Scottish Premier League club Heart Of Midlothian.

    • Matt says:

      06:41am | 03/02/10

Terrible name. I don’t like the trend towards team names that aren’t like you said, vicious animals. Or even just animals. Australia is full of animals. There should be no Melbourne Victory because they aren’t always victorious, just as the Heart won’t always play with theirs. The Roar don’t and the Power aren’t and the Tactix are bad. Etc.

But the Bulldogs and the Dragons and the Tigers always are.

But yes - Australia is chock-full of animals and their new football team should be the Platypus or the Fur Seals or the Endangered Red Bandicoot.

      The Heart is rubbish.

    • Rob says:

      06:13am | 03/02/10

Whilst I don’t like the name, I like the logo.

Some people are content with criticising everything all in the name of publicity.

    • Jonk says:

      08:48am | 04/02/10

Disagree Rob. The name is terrible, and the logo took me a lot of time to warm to. Hopefully someone at FFA HQ reads this because the fans hate the cringeworthy names we have to put up with.

Victory, Roar, Fury, Heart… Glory was once in that category but I think everyone is so used to it that they have forgotten how bad it is.

Dear FFA, what part of your marketing textbook says it’s good to give us team names that we feel embarrassed to tell our friends that we follow?  I just spent 5 months overseas and everyone who asked about Aussie football roundly thought we had the biggest wanks of team names ever seen.

Two other options were Sporting Melbourne and Melburnians. Both of them decent enough names. But no, Heart it will be. Groan!
