The former Soviet country of Turkmenistan isn’t known for its trendsetting qualities. It’s dry. It’s cold and ugly. It exports lots of cotton. Not what you’d call a world power.

In addition to passing herself off as a vocalist Britney has also been caught impersonating a police officer

But in 2005 it became the first country in the world to take a strong stand, not against fascism, but lip-synching.

Declared a great crime against the culture of the proud nation, the late President Saparmurat Niyazov banned miming in all forms _ concerts, TV, even private weddings.

China followed suit last year after a pretty girl replaced the face, but not the voice, of a less-cute pigtailed version singing the theme tune at last year’s Olympic Games opening ceremony. Yes, we were all shocked.

But the outrage has finally landed with the NSW Government revealing it’s considering laws to force artists to disclose on posters or tickets if they plan to mime.

Tabloid poplet Britney Spears seems to be the catalyst for what could be a pre-cursor to a wider crackdown.

Specifically, her 14 Australian shows in which she’s charged up to $1500 a ticket to let people watch her move her lips in the way they would look if noise was actually coming out of her mouth.

Value for money? The thrill of shaming tall poppies? Who knows what NSW’s rationale is, but it’s a frickin’ hilarious idea. And a fairly stupid one. I hope that few feel strongly about real life human ventriloquism. Those with a passion for watching artists perform moving live renditions of songs they write aren’t the candy-pop-bile type.

Those who obsess over celebrity, repetitive synth music and bright flashy lights won’t give a crap whether their half-naked, gyrating idol is singing. As long as they can sing along.

Anyone else who arcs up about the shame of lip-synching is probably a black frame spectacles-wearing, faux artsy, music snob.

Besides, there’s a case to let drones such as Spears mime.

Wikipedia (the shining beacon of truth) says miming ``can be used to make it appear as though actors have musical ability’‘.

``E.g. the Partridge Family. Or to misattribute vocals e.g. Milli Vanilli.

``It is more often used by recording artists to create a particular effect, to enable them to perform live dance numbers or to cover for illness or other deficiencies during live performances.’‘

The last two seem particularly apt for Britske.

She ain’t alone either. Rapper 50 Cent did it at the B.E.T music awards. R Kelly’s done it. Ashlee Simpson. Pavarotti when it got too cold for him to breathe and ... um ... the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at the 2000 Olympics.

Tour director Steve Dixon has defended Britney’s miming, saying ``you come for the experience’‘, and he might be right.

There’s so much more to look forward to from a Britney concert than just the ``music’‘. She might overdose/attack a photographer/collapse/vomit/shave her head/get put in a straight jacket/not wear undies/drink drive/abuse her father/give birth/forget her dance moves or simply look fat.

Alex Dickinson, have you been to Turkmenistan?

      I think not.

Referring to the place as merely cold and ugly, coupled with references to its long dead eccentric former dictator, shows quite clearly that you wouldn’t even be able to pinpoint it on a map.

It’s a beautiful country, mostly desert, with wonderfully hospitable people and a few Russians.

Crack jokes about Turkmenbasi sure, but don’t mislabel a whole country in your own musings merely based on a daydream you might have had.

You’re an idiot Dickinson. What sort of person would openly condone this kind of abuse on the music industry? It’s bad enough that we have to put up with Britney in the first place, let alone tolerate cultural retards, such as yourself, standing up an waving the “It’s OK, as long as stupid people like it, let them be stupid and have it!” banner in the air.

If she can’t do it live, she can’t do it. It’s fake. And watching her pretend to be real when you know it’s fake is doubly bad.

      It’s double fake.

Isn’t it funny how we all bayed for blood when Milli Vanilli were around. Say story - people went to see the show, yet somehow the fact they couldn’t sinjg got in the way.

      @ Jolanda well said !!!!

I purchased my ticket knowinf full well that she mimes, but as a fan i couldnt care if she stood on her head! I would be there no matter what.

The real issue is, that the public must be advised that when you go to a show that “miming is part of the act”. You choose to go and see an artist mime, then you have no reason to complain.

It is a show and it was the begining of the first show, give the girl a chance to warm up for goodness sake.  Why can’t people just let the show go on.  So many criticial people.  I know people who have paid $200.00 for a ticket and others who have got them for $50.00.  They all say the same thing, they know she mimes her songs but they do not care, they are going to watch a performance and listen to her songs - songs that they like to sing along with and dance to.

@Nat: $1,500 is for a meet and greet VIP package which includes food and drinks. That’s hardly your standard ticket, but I’m happy to let the sheep complain about the extreme prices that no more than a dozen people would have paid.  There are tickets on eBay going for more, that should be added into the “up-to” price. What about the fans who travelled to a concert in another city and paid for accomodation!! Let’s get people typing OMG IN CAPITALS!!

Must be a seriously slow news day when Britney lip syncing makes headlines.

      @Lisa.
Madonna did it, Pink does it, Kylie does it… and probably more i cant think of.
Brittney is lame. She’s lost it. She is a puppet for her management now.
Bunches of people walked out after just 3 songs of her first Aust. concert in Perth last night. Saying it was an awful show.

Actually., Margaret Gray, I think that Britney Spears is very good. Would I see her? No, but I don’t deny her obvious talent.

    • Flutz says:

      09:31pm | 06/11/09

It has been well known for years that Britney lyp synchs her concerts.  Anyone who bought a ticket to her show already new this and still bought the tickets, so they are obviously fine with it.

    • Lisa says:

      07:17pm | 06/11/09

You try and dance furiously for a couple of hours and see how well you sing while you’re throwing yourself about. I’d be gasping for breath after the first fifteen minutes… no, first minute.  Try it, go for a jog and sing at the same time.

    • Adrian says:

      04:48pm | 06/11/09

“Their ‘talent’ is inversely proportional to the number of back-up dancers alongside them.”

According to this formula, every operatic tenor and soprano who ever lived is crap then.

    • BMJ says:

Why can’t we let stupid people be fooled anymore?

It’s been known for years she mimes…

Also, if you’re going to her “circus” to hear a great voice then you got no clue to start off with.

    • Margaret Gray says:

      04:07pm | 06/11/09

Let’s put aside the fact that Ms Spears is about as ‘musical’ as a frozen cat dragged backwards over a buzzsaw, there is a very simple mathematical formula one should employ when assessing the artistic merit of your chosen artiste:

Their ‘talent’ is inversely proportional to the number of back-up dancers alongside them.

    • Nat says:

      02:55pm | 06/11/09

      @ Steve Smith
Alex wrote “up to” prior to the $1,500 price - how about some “accurate” reading?

    • Carl Palmer says:

      01:38pm | 06/11/09

You won’t get me to any concert if I know it’s a pre recording – mimed or lip-synched.  One assumes that a live concert is just that a live concert – what you see is what you get warts and all. All the bum notes the adlib and improvised stuff. I want to hear a live voice, guitar, drum etc not a recording. So if this is NOT going to be the case, then tell me and I’ll make a judgement if it is value for money.

I’m not a great fan of the NSW government but for mine, they got this right. Well done push this thru. If that’s what the performer will be doing then that shouldn’t be a problem.

Alex the SSO example is not quite right – I very much doubt that the people went there to listen or watch the SSO – even I’d let that one go thru to the keeper. If that happened at the SOH, then I’d be pissed off. I can say that when I have gone to the SOH it’s been live.

    • Steve Smith says:

      01:36pm | 06/11/09

I’m assuming the $1,500 tickets are the meet and greet/VIP packages on Ticketek as opposed to being for a standard ticket? Sure don’t worry about accurate reporting, sensationalism gets the “omg” factor.

Luckily the NSW government is saving all the naive fans who thought they were actually going to hear Britney Spears sing!! Unfortunately for Nathan Rees, they can’t vote yet.

    • Emma says:

      12:57pm | 06/11/09

This is gold! Let’s hope Britske, as Alex calls her, brings some scandal to Australia. That, friends, will make all the miming worthwhile. Baby on lap? Shaved head? Badly orchestrated exit from a car? What can we hope for this time…
There is no excuse for miming. If Pink can hang upside down from a high ropes affair and not miss a note, surely we can expect more than a mime from an average pop/dance act. Seriously. Who paid $1500?
