Something beautiful happened last night on Channel Nine. On Big Brother, a guy called Josh Moore whose brother died unexpectedly this week, exited the house with grace, poise and sheer gentlemanly class.

We want Moore!

In a week when our TV screens have been filled with 50 year olds carrying on like the proverbial pork chops in a large House in Canberra, how ironic that it should take a bunch of 20 year olds in a large house on the Gold Coast to remind us that Australians can be decent, warm-spirited people.

Normally Big Brother is unwatchable. It is hour after hour of ineducable dullards lolling about dry humping, cooking inedible food and generally having the sort of meaningless, circular conversations worthy of stoners. But last night it rose several levels above all that.

Josh was all class the minute he arrived on stage for his live chat with host Sonia Kruger. In the midst of his deep personal grief, it must have been hard for him to go through the whole official duties thing, but he did so without flinching. He knew the audience wanted to hear tales of BB house life, and he delivered.

The balance was just right. Kruger was not too intrusive, while Josh gave as much of himself as he could. There was a laugh or two, a reflection or two, and the hint of a tear. If Josh wasn’t such a genuine person, the whole event could have come across as ghoulish and disrespectful to his departed brother. But the tone, like Baby Bear’s porridge, was just right.

With his measured display, Josh not only struck a blow against crusty old bastards like me who believe anyone on a reality TV show must be a desperate wannabe, he also delivered a massive public relations boost for his oft-maligned generation.

Gen Y is often characterised as self-obsessed and materialistic, and while there are plenty in the BB house this year who appear to fit the description, Josh sure isn’t one of them. The guy has a lovely manner, a fact which is detectable with the sound turned down but which was made all the more abundantly clear with statements like:

“It was a no brainer for me [to leave the house]. Family comes first, it was an easy decision to come out and celebrate the life of a great man [my brother].”

And this gem, in response to a Kruger question on his appeal to the women of the BB house.

“You just have to talk to women Sonia, there’s no real science.”

You just have to talk to them. After everything that’s been said about women and sexism and the rest of it all week, doesn’t that just nail it? Don’t you just love this bloke?

Throw in that mop hair, the cool stubble and a smile which is confident but not smug, and kapow! Josh has carved a firm niche in the highly desirable territory between old school Aussie boofhead and new age over-sensitive manscaper.

The more you think about it, it’s amazing how often in the past the dopey antics of the Big Brother house have mirrored the dopey antics in Parliament. For the Sara-Marie Bum Dance of BB 2001, substitute disgraced Senator Mary Jo Fisher’s bizzarre Timewarp and Hokey Pokey. For countless acts of sleaze in BB land, substitute countless acts of sleaze in Canberra.

As mentioned, though, BB has been way above Canberra this week. The dodgiest, most inane show on television has showcased an average Australian who makes us proud to call ourselves that. Support for the guy on social media and online is completely through the roof, and for a good reason.

Here’s hoping Josh has time and space to mourn his real big brother this week while the show of the same name continues without him.

Meanwhile, the goons we pay to run our country might themselves take time out to ponder why BB rates in the millions, while the only people who bother to watch Question Time are those too old or infirm to reach for the remote.

Reality TV ?  - It is not often that we’ve seen a real woman on TV tearing strips off a sexist pig !  Great viewing, I wonder how the ratings are going ?

The trouble with you is, you cannot differentiate between a ‘blow-up doll’ and a ‘real woman’ !

no no non ascotrel. I (yes me!!!) am a real woman.
I do not need nor expect paternalistic patronisation to advance. I do not need to bring out the hankerchief when offended, even if than offence is about my gender.

I just get on with it. What a pity this poor excuse for anything cannot do the same.

I didn’t watch Big Brother but good on the guy for doing such a good job in such difficult circumstances. As to your other point, I too am so sick of the behaviour in Canberra. Imagine what could be achieved if politicians were about leadership and not jabbing fingers at their opponents and name calling. Maybe the next generation will change the system. I hope so.
Gen Y are kinda self obsessed or maybe just self-focused, They were raised that way by the Generation (mine) that many of those carrying on in Canberra belong to - the first self obsessed generation.

As an older woman I feel into watching the house for the first time and to my amazement became quite hooked, much to the amazement of most of my friends.

As a seventy one year old mother and grandmother watched Big Brother this year and have been totally amazed by the goings on.
The characters have been fascinating and for the most part genuinely likeable
and Josh I think could be the next Errol Flynn. He is an attractive, funny and very warm young man.He and Michael bounce off each and are so entertaining they would make a good comedy team.
He was cool and calm and very dignified after the death of his brother and most
impressive on his departure from the house.
The show gave me fresh hope on the calibre of the youth of our country, keep it up kids!

Watching the old fogies in Canberra score points off each other isn’t reality TV, it is scripted, soap opera-level fakery with few real personalities on show.

However while we have a duopoly in politics even more dominant than Coles & Woolies, our politicians have little incentive for more than theatre.

There aren’t even shareholders to keep the parties honest - you could fit all the Labor & Liberal members in the Melbourne Cricket ground, with enough room left over for every asylum seeker who has arrived by boat in the last twenty years.

It took a big man to do what Josh did last night, for sure. And a rating bonanza for Ch9. However I can’t help but think that they should have a get out clause in their contracts that exonerates them from these commitments if there is a death in the family while inside the house. He did extremely well giving the circumstances - I definitely wouldn’t have been so composed.

Another heart-warming event happened this weekend in Adelaide, in the form of tributes to jounalist Max Fatchen who died on Friday.

Articles like this are comforting in that they reinforce that most Australians are over the Political pettiness.

Given that both sides of Politics obsess over opinion polls, why aren’t they cleaning their act up given that so many people are visibly disgruntled with sexist provocations and blind rhetoric in Parliament?

    • Rebecca says:

      12:56pm | 15/10/12

Agreed. As someone who used to be very politically opinionated, the recent behaviour of our politicians has left me feeling completely uninspired. Given the current choices for our next federal election, I believe I’ll be drawing a pretty picture of a puppy on my ballot paper.

Big Brother house and Parliament is full of in-house banter and conflict. Josh Moore sets the standard for civil behavior. Journalist makes this clear in article. Responders to article engage in the equivalent of in-house banter and conflict.

hmm. it appears to be an issue not just with television and the halls of power, it is an issue with our culture.

    • Rose says:

      05:40pm | 15/10/12

Mental illness (depression) shouldn’t be a defence for shoplifting or assault. Senator Fisher knew she was doing wrong and did it anyway. Lots of people with mental illness manage to get through their lives without resorting to petty crime. I think she actually is an insult to those battling depression.

I do not watch big brother so i think that it would have been good to put something in the article to let us know about the circumstances. There are many who don’t watch reality tv. It would for us have been good to know what his dear brother died from or where to go to find out at least. It is terrible to lose a close family member, we have all been through it, haven’t we. Yes, Josh behaved with great dignity - but the same can’t be said for his housemates. Watching them trying to look the most shocked and distraught, watching them trying to outgrief each other, watching them trying desperately to squeeze out a tear when they were told of the guy’s demise - it was sickening - Michael especially. It’s someone else’s brother, for heaven’s sake, not your own dog. And by the way, Michael, an IQ of 136 isn’t genius, as you continue to illustrate - I’d suggest moderately intelligent, not half as clever as you think you are, and totally transparent.

Josh did indeed handle himself admirably last night, but that should not distract from the very real problem that Australia has regarding overt sexism. PM Julia Gillard had shown great courage with her speech last week, and frankly most women in Australia are sickened with being confronted almost daily with some manifestation of sexism. It’s about time this issue is seriously addressed and dealt with. Good on her and shame on Tony Abbott for echoing Alan Jones with his statement that the government should die of shame.
