Even if this turns out to be the last piece of cake Swedish Crown Princess Victoria will eat without feeling guilty or having to run 10 kilometres, her marriage to personal trainer Daniel Westling should go down in the history books as one royal fairytale “most likely” to have a happy ending.

Royal wedding cake, 500 calories per slice. Picture/File.

Because while their wedding in Stockholm on Saturday had enough pomp and ceremony to rival the “mother of all royal weddings” - Charles and Di circa 1985 - at least the Swedish princess, despite some resistance from her family, was free to choose her own “prince charming”, even if he was just one of the “common folk”. And given his day job, she’s also pretty much guaranteed to keep those toned biceps for life.

so the costs of personal fitness were so high, it was cheaper for a princess to marry her personal trainer?

Yay for Sweden’s monarchy who have moved with the times.
They changed the law to ensure secession can fall to the first born child, rather than just the first born son, and now they support their future Queen’s right to marry whom she chooses!
Sweden (and their monarchy) are a fabulous example of equality!
      We should all take note.

      So what’s the point?

If it’s all about equality and commoners why bother with a monarchy?

Because it’s Sweden and they choose to.
As an Australian I don’t get to weigh in on whether or not Sweden should be a monarchy.
As a human I do get to weigh in on their treatment of people as a whole.

LifeofY, check facts, the Monarchy who has gone most with the times is the Dutch and has since Juliana became queen in the late1940s. She choose not be be called Her Majesty but Madam/Mrs, she send all her kids and grandchildren to ‘normal’ public schools, no private this and that to be seen anywhere, and made them go their on their bycycles, like she used to ride around town on one for exercise and fresh air.  They could marry whom they wanted, all of them had regular jobs (I met one of the princes working for a bank in London) to keep themselves, with a small anual allowance for public functions.

Not only, they have had females run the country (1st born) for the last 116 years since Crownprince WIllem Alexander is the 1st male heir to be born since then.

He also married who he wanted, a woman he loved but did not have the approval of parlaiment, so he said ‘I will marry her, permission or not, come what may come from that’, and thereby showing to be willing to sacrifice title and position for the woman he loved.

The only difference is, that the Dutch Royal Family, stays out of the news, and lives quietly, that’s why you never hear any of this.

Generally speaking I think that all monarchies are just tax wasting, money sapping, head up their own ass, wastes of space. (Prince Harry excluded, who wouldn’t want to head out on the town with him?) But maybe i’ve just been living in the UK too long.

What they do well though is bring in the tourists; litterally by the thousands. You only need to stand outside the palace of any monarchy in any country to see the proof. However I’m pretty sure that everyones interest in royalty will dry up pretty quick if they all soon become plebs like you and I.

Who wants to take a photo of a personal trainers house??
