Bruce Hawker is the director of Hawker Britton and is advising the Rann Labor Government on its campaign.

We are now at the business end of the South Australian election campaign and the contest is going down to the wire.

Isobel Redmond: guaranteed several days of unwavering party should she be elected.

After years of internal division the Liberal Party had - until this week - managed to develop an appearance of unity on the back of Mike Rann’s problems following the Michelle Chantelois allegations.

With four leaders in four years and little more than a veneer of unity following an acrimonious leadership spill involving former deputy leader Vickie Chapman and current leader Isobel Redmond, the Liberal campaign settled on a “small target” strategy.

This is presumably because Mike Rann was on the back foot for the first time in 15 years and the the Liberal strategist clearly believed that their best chance was to focus as much attention as possible on Rann and as little as possible on the inexperienced Redmond.

Until this week the Liberal campaign team had managed to quite effectively run this “small target” strategy by exposing Opposition Leader, Isobel Redmond, to a minimum of media scrutiny.

This approach included taking the extraordinary step of refusing a second debate with Mike Rann in the regional centre of Port Pirie despite previously agreeing to a debate there.

Other “small target” tactics included going for several days without releasing a policy and having Redmond leave the State for more than 24 hours ostensibly in order to be briefed on Kevin Rudd’s health reforms.

Then last Friday they may have gone a bridge too far. The troubles came when the Liberal campaign team refused to allow former Liberal leadership contender, Vickie Chapman, onto the ABC TV programme “Stateline” to debate veteran Labor minister John Hill.

This gave Labor an opportunity to reprise the claim that Chapman, who last year lost to Redmond in a leadership spill, was being gagged.

Why all this stung the Chapman camp, which is factionally opposed to Redmond, is not clear. But sting them it did, and on the Monday of the last week in the campaign Chapman dealt her Liberal team a nasty blow.

At a press conference, which she and Redmond attended, Chapman was twice asked whether she would rule out challenging for the leadership even if Redmond won the election.

And twice Chapman refused to give a straight answer. When she was approached again a little later she again refused to rule out a challenge.

It took until that evening for Chapman to issue a statement of support for Redmond - but by then the damage had been done.

The issue is still alive and Labor has started running TV and radio ads pointing out that Liberal voters may vote for Redmond but could easily be getting Chapman as soon as the Liberal parliamentary party meets.

The lesson for the Liberal strategists was that their obsession with micromanaging Redman and the other front benchers led to an internal backlash. Their strength became their weakness.

A mistake in the first week of a campaign is unlikely to be remembered. A mistake in the last week is unlikely to be forgiven.

We will know on Saturday night if this mistake has denied the Liberals their momentum just as Mike Rann hits full stride in the dash for the line.

And you dont think that the factional heavyweights who you obviously advise are thinking of overthrowing Kevin if his popularity and poll performance doesnt improve.

Bruce is working for Mike Rann right now. It’s been in the paper. In other words, he’s paid to write this by SA Labor

Phil, Bruce is one of the brains behind the “modern” Labor Party.  He perfected the art of spin that has given us the great governments of NSW and Qld.  The simple thruth is the average punter will go for simple messages over the more complex ones and if Bruce and his team can make this message stick SA will have Rann as Premier on Sunday morning.  On the other hand if the voters think this is another diversion from the real debate they will punish Labor.

She is no Julia Gillard, Julie Bishop, Kristina Keneally or even Barry O’Farrell’s deputy who’s name escapes me ...but she is a woman and that gender is a pretty good choice of opponent to have against a man trying to put a controversy behind him.

Surely this article should carry a discalimer than Bruce Hawker is currently based in Adelaide running the Rann camapign with other members of the Hawker Brittain faction of the Labor Party.

Political followers will know this fact but I dare say many Punch readers could wrongly mistake Bruce Hawker for an independent commentator or at the very least be unaware of teh fact he’s running the Rann campaign.

All articles on the Punch are opinion and thus it is not essential from an ethical perspective to place disclaimers on the work. For what it’s worth, you can find out the background of any Punch contributor by clicking on their name. I know I do.

Give it a bone Hawker.  This tactic worked for Rann in 1997, but it wont work again.  How desperate are you guys not to focus on the issues and the track record of a do nothing government.  Never forget it was Hawker that made a name for himself as do nothing Bob Carr’s Chief of Staff and feeds Rudd etal their meaningless spin for a living.

      Bruce,
Before I read your headline properly I almost thought your contribution was going to be about your pet project euphemistically called ‘the NSW Labor Government’; which aside from the Premier rushing to detach herself from the Labor brand, how is that one going these days?  Are there any particular lessons that NSW Labor can bring to South Australian Labor in terms of good governance?  NSW is a classic case of a Government elected for at least one term too many, a mistake that hopefully won’t be lost on South Australian voters.  I was also hoping to hear a bit about the still secret Henry Tax Review, which probably has some pretty bad news in store for the South Australian wine industry, so I understand why it has a release date that is after Saturday.

What a load of rubbish. Chapman has stated she will not challenge and that Redmond has her full support. Frankly, Redmond came out of this looking very, very good. She says, truthfully, that Chapman has the right to challenge any time she likes but they have reached an understanding and it won’t happen. Compare this to the the complete avoidance of the question by Rann in respect of challenges by Foley and Conlon and the incredible prevarication and obfuscation that comes out of the Rann camp whenever he is asked a question he doesn’t like.

Bruce Hawker seems to be trying hard to make an issue out of nothing.
One could be forgiven fot concluding that Mr. Hawker is being mischievious
& fails to give a balanced view.
The real facts are :  S.A.‘ians are sick & tired of Labor. They have been in govt. far too long.  Rann has become stale , his govt. is tired & bereft of vision.
On the other hand :  S.A.‘ians are ready to embrace a new LIBERAL govt. with fresh new ideas & a clear vision for the advance of S.A. under a fresh new banner. Women particularly, are stimulated at the prospect of a female Premier & are prepared to vote Redmond into govt.  Generally summing up ,
the electorate believes that ITS TIME.

Brucey mate, get your facts straight, we know that you are just a paid Rann flunky but please, a little decorum. Ms Redmond offered sooky/ Rann an OPEN meeting in a town hall with questions from voters, not Dorothy Dixers like Kelton asks. Maybe he thought that he wasn’t smart enough to answer questions from real people

    • Mike says:

Bruce, spin and hype have been brought to extraordinary levels - and in no small part because of companies like yours. It has now got to a stage where the common person has to question everything because of his or her suspicion over being taken for a ride. Life, people, situations and genuine emotions have been poisoned by the spin and bulldust that have been carefully contrived by so called marketing experts. The sooner we see the end of this type of manipulation the better off we all will be in the long run.

“This gave Labor an opportunity to reprise the claim that Chapman, who last year lost to Redmond in a leadership spill, was being gagged.”

This is a smokescreen to what is really happening.

      The reality is:
      - The are no guarantees Rann will serve another full term.
      - Labor have no surefire replacement for Rann (Jay Weatherall perhaps being closest to what you would call ‘electable’.
      - Labor appear to have gagged many of their own - I have barely heard a peep from Atkinson, Conlon and Foley.
      - The 8 years of Rann Labor Government have been characterised by media spin and populism, rather than substance.

Come on, South Australia, vote Labor out.

    • Ian F says:

Wayne Fehlhaber says: “Bruce Hawker seems to be trying hard to make an issue out of nothing.”

Wayne, that is just Bruce doing his job.  His business model is closely correlated with the existence of Labor governments.  He is either on the SA Labor payroll for the election campaign or working as a volunteer spin merchant.

    • Manik says:

Bruce you trying to apportion blame on the election outcome before it occurs to protect your ass….No doubt you have been well paid for your advice and you will also be questioned add nausea um about your strategy and political advice during this campaign, especially if Rann loses. Why is this being paraded as political analysis when really it is political desperation to take attention off your own campaign shortcomings. Come on - be a man - take responsibility!
