Hypocrite Harvey goes stormin’ into cyberspace
If you’re in a Harvey Norman store right now preparing to buy a video game, put it down. Gerry has commanded you.
The CEO of electronics chain Harvey Norman Gerry Harvey has admitted defeat and will finally be opening an online store.
But he won’t be selling fridges. Oh no. Nor will he be selling fans, or air-conditioning units, or iPods, iPads, televisions or cameras.
No. Gerry Harvey will be selling video games, imported direct from his Ireland store (avoiding GST in the process) at significantly lower prices than what is being offered in his ailing flagship stores.
In fact the antiquarian electronics supplier even went so far as to tell customers not to buy video games from his retail stores.
The announcement has created more questions than it has answered.
Who launches an online store three days before Christmas?
Why is Gerry Harvey undercutting his own retail stores?
Why is he importing the games from a country with one of the dodgiest economies in the Eurozone?
Is Harvey Norman Ireland really separate from Harvey Norman Australia?
And isn’t it the teensiest bit ironic that the man who has been demanding the Australian Productivity Commission add GST to overseas goods bought online is himself selling GST-free products?
I should be glad that Gerry Harvey has finally joined the real world but he seems to be the only person to make online shopping seem eccentric.
The man himself isn’t even pleased about the decision.
Here’s what he had to say about the launch of Harvey Norman Direct Import:
We’re not doing this with a great deal of joy. We’ve been able to do this for a long time and we’ve held off and held off but you get to a stage where you just can’t hold off any more.
He just couldn’t help himself could he? Even as he is dragged kicking and screaming into the digital era Gerry Harvey had to get in one last hissy fit before becoming a man of the online world.
