There were lots of memorable lines in Tony Abbott’s first press conference as Liberal leader yesterday but there was one you can expect to hear repeatedly ahead of the next election, whenever that might be.

Ready for battle: Abbott in his Parliament office last night. Picture: Ray Strange

``Each and every interest rate rise over the next 12 months is due to the irresponsible spending spree of the Rudd government,’’ he said.

There you have it. Kevin Rudd is going to be made to own each and every 25 basis point rise in interest rates between now and the next election - including the latest one yesterday.

The ETS is the issue that has dominated the debate for the past fortnight but interest rates - and the associated ``Labor is burying you in debt and deficit’’ line that will be flogged by the Coalition - will have just as much say in Rudd’s election timing.

Labor doesn’t want to be going to the polls with rates heading back toward 4.5-5 per cent. As Wayne Swan reluctantly accepts, the wonderful rates holiday we’ve enjoyed through the non-recession is over and households will soon be hurting. (Though, Westpac’s stunning and inexplicable 45 basis point rise in its mortgage rates yesterday suggests the real pain might come sooner than Labor expects.)

There was some talk, fuelled by the debt crisis in Dubai, that the Reserve Bank would give us all a Christmas gift and hold off raising rates until our credit card payments become due next year.

But yesterday’s statement from Glenn Stevens and his crew, who raised rates for the third time in three months for the first time ever, suggests they are worried about a housing bubble and we are on the fast track to situation normal, which is official rates somewhere around 5.5 per cent and mortgage rates near 7.5 per cent.

``In Australia, the downturn was relatively mild, and measures of confidence and business conditions suggest that the economy is in a gradual recovery,’’ the RBA said.

The global economy, so enfeebled just six months ago, has ``resumed growth’‘, we’re told. The strong dollar is helping keep inflation and rates pressure under control but the unemployment rate is close to its peak and, says the RBA, “the risk of serious economic contraction in Australia” has passed.

For what it’s worth - and I have lost a little faith in economists during the financial crisis - the consensus is for rates to continue to rise after, perhaps, a brief break at the start of next year to be about 4.25-4.75 per cent (and as high as 5.25 per cent) by the second half of 2010.

The reason rates are rising is that Australia has performed better than any other advanced economy during the downturn.

But, as Abbott knows, pride in your country’s economic achievements counts for nothing when your mortgage payments are rising every month.

Has the gravy train stopped, will Kevin be back sleeping in his car, will the 747 be able to have a rest, it is starting to show signs of wear. It looks like being an interesting year, a former press secretary, a Rhodes Scholar anda man with principles against an educated nerd intent on performing on the world stage instead of looking after the people who put him in power. In the Red Corner wearing a smidgin of red policies backed by a redhead second in color and thought versus, in the Blue corner a trained boxer wearing tried blue shorts, skilled in ducking and weaving from years in the ring, backed by millions of people who are sick of the nerd and his overseas joints including some he can’t remember, the referee will be the press in this battle, maybe they will try to be honest in this bout, not like they were in the last stoush, when they backed paid actors posing as true blue workers.

The key event that destabilized Turnbull was the disastrous Gretch email affair – all organized by Liberal Senator Eric Abetz.

One of the key traitors to stab Turnbull in the back & bring about his downfall was ...Eric Abetz.

Poor Turnbull - he was set up by the traitors in the extreme right wing

Abbott like his religion, use, abuse and need fear to control themselves and anybody stupid enough to listen, lowest common denominator stuff.  All progressives have to do is sit back and laugh at the coming onslaught of crap that defines conservatives these days.  What a pity their talent wasn’t used for good instead of evil. Imagine what will happen when climate change bites their dumb arse, but hey, rationality has never been their motivator, as compared to self-interest and greed.

If all that Abbott can do is role out the negatives, then he and his party will go nowhere. After all ranting about rising interest rates when his party got the shuv for rising rates…. would only make sense to the people that are already in their base ... and as they know that isnt enough for many of them to keep their seats.

Going at Labor for the bureacratic side of the ETS is also a false step. After all the Libs gave us the GST which I remember is 10% on almost everything… and bureacracy to support it. Oh yes it also occurs to me that the Commonwealth Public service and it’s privatised hangers on, grew in number during the Liberal years. No government in our history has created so much legislation that involved expanding the public and public funded sectors as the Liberals did in their last run in government.

Rudd will own the interest rate rises, just as Howard owned them. The only difference is that Rudd will own them to pay for keeping people in jobs, Howard owned them because of his failure to get people into jobs (rates went up to keep the lid on the economy, that was contained by skill shortages…. something the Commonwealth holds responsibility for).

It’s not the best person who gets the job in politics. It’s the most polished, silver tongued talker that gets the job. Look at Rudd….listen to Rudd…he croons when he speak….usually doesn’t answer honestly any difficult question but he has the media hypnotised all the same. The Liberal party need a bloody top notch PR company to teach them how to croon, lie without batting an eyelid & schmooze the public…..just like Rudd.

I think if I just bought my first home, encouraged by the government and their misguided increase to the first home buyers grant, and my payments start biting I wouldn’t be such a fan of Wayne and Kev’s “economic management”.  I probably also wouldn’t be such a fan of a big new tax that threatens to move some of our most productive industries offshore and take a whole heap of jobs with them.

Most of the commentators didn’t think he was a chance to get the leadership.  Tony will be hoping they don’t think he’s a chance at the Prime Ministership either.

Australians who didn’t lose their jobs during the recession are about to feel pain - lots of it. Interest rates have started the climb and will continue in that direction. Food prices are ridiculous and will keep going north. Our economy now needs to find $1.5BILLION each month to pay the interest on our Stimulus Package debt. Labor now wants to cripple everyone further with a massive energy tax that no one seems to understand.

Yes, Tony Abbott has a lot of ammunition to fight with. What he needs is a fair go from the media - especially the left wing Fairfax group. In a fair fight, he will defeat Rudd.

      Some ETS Stuff…
The ETS is a ‘Broadbased Consumption Tax’ - its a tax on everything
The GST is a ‘Broadbased Consumption Tax’
The GST was unelectable - see 1993 Paul Keating, (If you are saying what about 1998 - that was Howard’s smallest win)
The ETS is so complex that it cannot be understood. Would Kevin Rudd want to fight an election on a TAX, does he really want to give an astute politician (Tony Abbott), the ability to have an election on ‘Labors Great Big New Tax’.
Tony Abbott, with the ETS will adopt the Paul Keating approach, “If you don’t understand it, don’t vote for it, because if you did understand it you definitely wouldn’t vote for it”

So will the ETS be an issue at the next election

Tony, has some ammunition just use it right.

The ETS is dead, the ETS stands for ENORMOUS TAX SYSTEM, Rudd must be made to explain this to the public exactly how much everyone will pay, and how we are to be better off.

He also needs to explain that we are going to be giveing money to so called poorer countries, he needs to explain then why we should be paying eg Zimbabwe & Burma 2 countries with human right records whcih are disgusting, how can he explain he wants to take money from Aussie battlers to fund these despots who run there countries, built on fear.

The interest rates are Rudds, again he was having a go at Howard now he needs to explain how he will fix this, without the GREAT BIG TAX.

Rudd needs to do this without taking shots at the Liberal party, Rudd also needs to be interviewed not by left wing journos, but Andrew Bolt & Alan Jones who will take him to task, will Rudd do this i think not

This intervention into the ETS had to happen now as it was likely to fund the Labour Party for years to come. Surely Malcolm could see that. Lets deal with the real climate change and not the political one. We owe Tony Abbott for bringing some sanity into the discussion.

The fact that the State Labor Governments have made a collective stuff up with those funds is no reflection on Howard. It is actually a very accurate reflection of what Mr Smug Rudd has begun to do to the country as a whole.

You ask “What have I done for the country lately?”. Well, apart from paying taxes for a pathetic NSW Govt and a do-nothing Federal Govt,  I voted Liberal last election and I will again at the next with the sincere hope we consign Rudd and his band of fools to political history.

Pft interest rates - even the dummies have been educated on this issue over the last few years so no traction there.  CPRS (ETS) sure go around yelling TAX at everyone - this will bring about the process needed to again educate the dummies by having the debate.  And who will come out of that one looking like a fool - the denialists (more and more on my country trips I am being told about local farmers and businesses being proactive on climate change, FFS they need to be - and that they cannot believe the ignorance and stupidity of the Nationals MP’s) .  Asylum seeker issue - go there if you dare Abbott, aussies need a good dose of compassion for sure but are they really that heartless and selfish?  I don’t think so, what is needed is some more understanding of what these people are going through as well as the contribution they make to our society - both historically and now.

I have been somewhat surprised at the number of women (surprised by how many, not the sentiment) I’ve come into contact with that I previously thought had no interest in politics who are just sickened to the pit of their stomach that Tony Abbott could have any chance of being PM.  With several saying they would do all they could to rally and protest against him.  I know this to be Abbotts achilles heel - he will never be PM.  The men here will discount this idea - and no doubt post a reply in a female name claiming to be a supporter wink  The thing is we women don’t take kindly to some god botherer telling us what we can and cannot do with our bodies - we put up with those attitudes from the minority because we understand that is part of their belief system, but for him to abuse his power in government and change laws or suppress viable treatments because of his personal agenda rather than for the good of the country and people then that makes him very dangerous indeed.  What else might he choose to apply his sense of morality to?  As the christian/liberal right vote is only worth 20% I would suggest he is going to bring the party to incredible new lows.

Right wing conservative morons don’t concern me at all - in fact, I’m thinking of voting for Abbott at the next election just so that I have something to whinge about if he gets in and ruins Australia with his right wing conservative policies and legislation.

I’m also looking forward to the revamped WorkChoices - there is nothing as satisfying as the corporate enslavement of those who work hard for their money.

I mean, who cares about their entitlements - you’re not going to need them after you’ve been forced to sign an AWA contract that’ll leave you with less money and working more hours.

I’m involved with my own business so I won’t need to sign any AWA contracts - I’m set.

Abbott cannot win, Australia is a land of moderates, we fear the extremities of both wings and Abbott is in comparison to other leaders out on the extremities of the right wing. He cannot win so long as this is part of his perception.

Jason - does your wife get to have her own opinion or is she just meant to follow yours?  Does she know about the reasons women are against Abbott?  Is she a Christian?  Maybe you should discuss this with her instead of making assumptions - I’ve known women to vote against their husbands wishes and not tell them (you don’t get to look over her shoulder).

Exactly - most people realise that both the extreme left and right are as bad/evil as each other.

A healthy combination of moderates from both sides is the best for the people and the country.

I think it’s funny people wouldn’t have even considered the Libs could possibly win the next eletion, even the Lib supporters themselves agreed.  But now there seems to be alot of comment on the subject, just shows somethings changing. And go and have a look at the telegraph online poll about who you would vote for as PM. Abbott is miles ahead of Rudd. That would never have been the case with Turnbull. Abbott’s got my vote, but Turnbull wouldn’t have. And by the way I am a female.. Bring on an election I say.

Drew @ 1238; when you have a government who throws “free” cash around like the Rudd government, there by increasing inflation, the RBA uses a blunt object like raising interest rates to curb that trend. For the simple; it’s like driving around with your foot on the brake and accelerator at the same time. While interest rates aren’t normally something Governments have complete control over, in this instance, they are almost entirely responsible. RBA have said the continual spending spree (stimulus) by this government and the fallout associated, leaves them with little recourse but to raise rates.

Frankly I hope Abbott goes for Rudds throat on this, as the attack dog he’s known to be. Rudd has had it far too easy in terms of an opposition up until this point.

N, so you would agree that this is exactly what happened in the last term of the Howard government?
The biggest problem with you analysis is rates are currently moving from stimulatory to neutral as opposed to neutral to tightening in 05-07.

@Jason. Poll after poll shows Abbott is repugnant to the majority of women because of his extreme pre-historic attitudes on contraception, abortion and other social issues. For the record I am a married professional woman and not a radical feminist. The other huge negative for Abbott is his consistent and longheld support for workchoices. Because he offends three major demographics i.e. workers, women and the those interested in the environment, the man is unelectable. Red speedos are not going to make him a serious prospect for PM.

    • Shelley says:

“Drew @ 1238; when you have a government who throws “free” cash around like the Rudd government…”

Oh - you mean like John Howards baby bonus?  The one off payments thrown around by John Howard?

Interest rates are on the rise because the stimulus package actually worked and saw the economy turn around.

The overall concensus of economists is that the stimulus package helped ensure that Australia avoided the worst of the recession - something that you don’t seem to want to admit.

Whether you agree with the way the money was spent (or even whether or not the money should have been spent), the stimulus packages ensured that the building/construction industry survived and that unemployment was kept relatively low.

Can you imagine the impact on Australia if the building/construction industry slowed right down, jobs were lost across all sectors and people had to apply for centrelink benefits?

Or is this what you would have preferred?

Sounds to me like you’re a little upset that Australia didn’t go down the tubes under Labor.

McDazz; it’s the continued, uncontested spending that I’m driving at and what the RBA is concerned about. Don’t agree with the baby bonus either, glad you bought it up, but I don’t recall the RBA repeatedly asking the former or present Government to abolish it due to the effect it was having on inflation.

“...stimulus package actually worked…”; pretty specious reasoning considering Australia and Asia were considerably sheltered in contrast to the rest of the world from the fallout of the GFC.

You have got to love the left, slapped in the face with ETS going down in flames and what do they do… Call an election and get the matter dealt with now they have their trigger. No they will re-submit the legislation to further debate in the Senate in February. Just a little frightened of the single issue election and well they should be. Despite all the vitriol, anti-catholic and ‘Abbott is a women hater’ sentiment, the truth is the the ETS is an anchor come election time and will gain no support in middle Australia. For all you elitist lefties, middle Australia is where the real people live, you know the one’s who work hard just to meet the mortgage payments and put the kids through school,  you probably driven past them in your mummy and daddy’s 4WD on your way to pick up up the chardonnay for your next hating session with your like minded souls.

Middle Australia are the people who are watching interest rates rise putting pressure on their abilities to make ends meet and I cannot wait for the Rudd/Gillard/Wong show to begin to explain to them why they should be further financially stressed with a new tax on everything that delivers zero returns in regards to the environment.

It won’t be about climate deniers and end of the world scenario’s then, it will be about the facts, you want me to pay the equivalent of 25% of the GST in a new tax that will deliver me what… NOTHING! Not a cleaner planet, not a reduction in global tempreatures, not a garaunteed future for my kids, just a feeling that we are doing our bit, which of course is all spin and no substance.

Should be an interesting challenge for the spin doctors, not sure the’ fair suck of a sauce bottle cobber, just wanna do my best for the globe mate’ will cut it this time for the PM and I cannot wait.

Pity the government does not have the courage to pull the trigger on this debate now and we have to wait until next year… Ah well, just more time for the truth to will out on the ETS.

We weren’t so much sheltered as we were lucky.

China had a lot to do with that, but the reality is that Australia would more than likely have entered a recession if not for the stimulus packages.

The Government got it right in a couple of regards - they focused on retail and the building/construction sectors and the results were all positive.

The Government did cut out a large portion of the spending when the RBA advised them to, however there was certainly a trickle effect.

Regardless, without the stimulus packages, there would have been a massive rise in unemployment across a wide range of sectors.

This would have had an even bigger impact on the Australian economy as well as Government spending - particularly in unemployment benefits - just like what happened during the early 90’s.

Having said this, I certainly think that Rudd and Co could have done better as mistakes were definitely made.  Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

As we all know, no Government is perfect - even Howard made his fair share of mistakes (I’ll spare you the list).

One of those was the baby bonus.

It was totally unnecessary and was nothing but a waste of tax payers money by Howard and Co.

“He has already said himelf workchoices is dead, and he has also said he believes in climate change, his views on contraception and abortion are also they same as Kevin Rudds.”

Abbott has already raised the prospect of new workplace legislation should the Liberals gain power and has claimed that Labors rollback of Workchoices went to far.

Workchoice will definitely be revisited if Abbott should become the leader.

As for Climate Change, Abbott has recently claimed that “Climate Change is crap”.  His train of thought lasted a few weeks - until he became the leader of the Liberals, when he suddenly claimed it is real.

I’m not sure what his stance is on it today.  Flip a coin - that’s your best bet.

As for abortion, Abbott has stated that he wants “alternative counselling” to pregnant women through church affiliated groups.

I don’t believe in abortions (although I am pro-choice), but I also don’t believe in women being forced to have counselling through a church group.

Abbott is a right wing conservative nut job.

He is as much a danger to a “free” society as the far left is.
